It is a very good discussion. Existentialism says that a human person should be understood in a way that is contextualized. because human person is always "in a context." When understood in the light of personality theory, this is helpful, that we see each other with compassion and full of understanding (Levinas).

Ang pinaka-takeaway ko sa lecture mo is Denial/Avoidance/Repression is the root of all psychological evil! Ung mga depression, impotence, etc - symptoms lang pala yan. Kasi based sa Modern Psychiatry, jan nakafocus sa “treating the symptoms”. Bigyan ka ng antidepressants to supposedly “cure” the depression. Pero surface level lang un, those are just symptoms not the root cause itself. So ang true solution is to confront all your fears and anxieties and do something about it, and not avoid it or repress it. Minsan naiisip ko na lang, sa dami ng problema ko today, na maging Stoic na lang but narealize ko that is hardly a solution, because that’s just another guise for repression. Problems won’t go away unless you confront it, un sa tingin ko ang gist ng talk mo. That’s an eye opener for me since mahilig din akong tumakas sa problema.

    “Makati ung nanay”
    Nabwisit sa Tatay niya
Ito ang gusto kong Professor sobrang bagets magsalita. Walang archaic words and formal tone.

insights lang skl po hahaha, pero baka illogical yung insights ko, napansin ko na connected yung hierarchy of needs sa modes of being. Umwelt is related to physiological and safety needs, mitwelt for love and belongingness, and eigenwelt for self-esteem and self-actualization. Treating those areas of being or needs deficiency on aspect of humans treats psychopathology like alienation or non-being.

    Nihilistic Existentialism
    Phenomenology
    Existential Death
Burden of Freedom and Pain of Responsibility
    Life is suffering
Essence - main ingredient ng isang tao
Existence - there must be movement
Drives and Needs - Essence of a person (Freud)
    Example: sex and aggression
The things that we choose to do are what will define us.

Wala akong “ontological anxiety” or “fear of nonbeing” in the sense na hindi ako sa death mismo takot, kundi sa hell! If diretso ako sa heaven, God can take away my life at this very moment. Because for me, this world is full of evil and suffering. Kaso I haven’t lived up yet to my utmost potentiality, ang dami kong pang hindi nagagawa. So like Parable of Talents, matalino ako and yet ano na bang na-accomplish ko sa buhay ko? Un ang greatest fear ko talaga, ang macast sa dagat dagatang apoy ng Inferno for simply not utilizing my talents well for the greater good. “To much is given, much is required”.

Di naman sa hindi pinapansin ang objective world, meron pa din but even hard core scientists themselves are persons with biases.
Every human being is complex and unique ergo they have different subjective interpretations.
Dasein - we are not mere observers of the world, we are also living in the world. We are the caterpillars in the jar.
We can be observers not just mere participants as opposed to animals.
Alienation - di nila alam kung sino sila or mundong ginagalawan nila
    Fromm’s Existential Dichotomy

    Rationalism vs Empiricism
Rationalism: everything exists only in our minds (Descartes)
Empiricism: there is an objective world around us
    Life has no inherent meaning
Walang meaning ang buhay, kayo ang gumawa ng meaning niyo.
I don’t have to LOOK for a meaning, I just have to CONSTRUCT a meaning.
Theories remove the humanity of the person
You observe people in a “scientific manner” and then apply the theories to people like a guinea pig
    Existentialism vs Behaviorism (Pavlov-Skinner)
We are reducing people to mere objects.

    Ontological guilt
    Denying the guilt become neurotic
    Denial, Refusal, Repression
Neurotic symptoms: sexual impotence, depression, cruelty to others, inability to make a choice
    Neurotic guilt
Anxiety and guilt - we have to accept it as it is and do something about it

Nagagalit sa akin ung asawa ko kasi ang lalim ko daw kausap, akala ko condescending un kasi Nerd ako nung College, my classmates were bullying me for being overly invested in topics like this. Eh nung nakinig ako sa lecture mo, it’s like viewing myself from a 3rd person Perspective, more like playing a Sims version of myself. And then narealize ko, ah malalim nga, masakit nga sa ulo, kahit Tagalog siya, or in the words of my Tatay, “minor subject lang”. Sa utak kasi ng Tatay, heavy math lang ang masakit sa ulo. Well, I beg to disagree and watching this is a proof na very heavy and cerebral din siya sa utak.

Akala ko Psychology lang ang mostly based on theories. Narealize ko nung nagkasakit ako sa puso, that even Medicine itself, na supposed to be “objective and scientific”, is based on theories, research and clinical trials. So kung trial and error lang pala siya, nasan ung “objectivity” jan? The human anatomy maybe objective but pagdating na sa modalities of treatment, dun na biglang nagiging “subjective”. You could see bodies of research clashing against another set of research. You could see divergence of opinions amongst doctors themselves. Sa Law, expected mo na na may great deal of subjectivity jan, pero sa Medicine dun ka magugulat.

We create our meaning of life. Lagi ko iniisip yan. If you ask people about this, iba-iba ang sagot. Why? Dahil sila sila ang nagbibigay ng meaning sa buhay nila. Giving meaning to life makes one content. Technically wala talaga. Agree ako sa mga nihilistic existentialists. Di ka naman pinanganak na may meaning eh. As you grow up, you just live until bigla mong maisip kung ano ang meaning ng buhay.
