  • Ten years ago I produced "Going Green" for Catch Magazine, July 2010 Issue #12. This was before aerial cameras, before social media. Another world.
    Now today we are all under the COVID-19 social distancing rules as of March 2020- a good time to add this film to the online community we're all depending on during the crisis. This blast from the past is a gift to honor the old films from the Catch Vault that have been sitting on old drives collecting dust.
    "Going Green" features a great trip I took ten years ago, accompanied by a few friends to create the 12th film for Catch Magazine www.catchmagazine.net. We hit a local favorite, the Metolius River in Central Oregon. The Metolius is a beautiful spring-fed river, crystal clear and has some of the most prolific hatches that fly anglers dream of. It's no easy day on the water though; It's match the hatch and hard wading. If you get one or two fish you've had a great day. It's for the beauty of the water and the environment that you go to the location... if you get a few of these beautiful trout, that's just the icing on the cake. For this film, my buddy Eric Neufeld was the angler on camera, and we had some great help from our local fly shop owner, Jeff Perin from The Fly Fishers Place here in Sisters, Oregon. This was Green Drake time, end of June and perfect to be on the water to capture these big bugs on film. I also want to thank my wingman, Brian O'Keefe, for being our net wrangler to catch a few green drakes for the production. I hope you enjoy "Going Green" during these strange days of 2020. When we all are able to head back outside, please support those local shops like The Fly Fisher's Place who are the blood line of or industry. flyfishersplace.com/
    Stay safe and keep dreaming of the river....it will be waiting. Would love to hear your feedback about this older film I created years ago- please comment for community discussion below.

    The Metolius is one of those MUST VISITS if you ever get out west. On a blue sky day you can watch the start of the water come out of the side of a mountain and be spell bound 'till dark. Even IF it's not a blue sky day ... it's a memory of a lifetime! Someone above sure had a creative day making THIS river!

    I lived in Basalt CO for a few years and would fish the FryingPan almost everyday. The greatest days were when the Green Drakes were hatching and the surface of the river was exploding with rises and you would catch a fish every cast. Amazing video here!

    Between the beautiful surroundings and the wilyness of the fish there may not be a more satisfying place on earth to catch a trout. Great vid as always. Best in the Biz

    I've just watched the video...the landscapes, the trout taking the fly (Wow!!!),... the harmonious casts in slow motion...the nice music... Once I learnt about the Stendhal Synndrome, when people is surrounded by tons of beauty. I think this might be close to It. A superb video, really. Congratulations.

      Fished it twice. The first time I caught scenery. The second time had one hook-up and one 8 inch redside. According to a guy I talked to earlier, that was a good day. He had two hits and felt he had done well. Humility is plentiful on that river. Gorgeous country.

    Metolius is such a beautiful river, hard to believe what starts out as a small trickle and balloons into a massive stream few miles downstream. Caught my one and only rainbow there few there few years ago, slipped on the riverbed while trying to reel it in, got fully wet, and lost the fish before I could fully appreciate its beauty. Can't wait to be back, after all this chaos ends.

    Something that always intrigues me is, a lot of North American fishing is done downstream, whereas in Australia we almost exclusively fish upstream, or cross current.

    • @straubdavid9
      @straubdavid9 4 года назад

      Depends on the fly you are using and the situation. Most of the flyfishers I know fish upstream YMMV. Take care from Pennsylvania USA.

      easier on that stream to drop flies down to feeding fish then to work upstream towards rising fish. really intense wading in that river as well

    Yes great video but… If you come please be respectful this is a fragile river in a fragile ecosystem. Also save yourself about three years worth of struggle and learning stop by the fly fishers place in sisters Oregon and ask for Jeff Perin he will get you dialed in on the right places to be
