Stepover apple and pear training is very popular in Europe as a way of creating a border along paths or even at the edge of potager beds and less formal vegetable gardens. I love them so much and we can buy the rootstock already grafted onto dwarf varieties. This apple arbor is such a great idea for this part of your garden.

Well, you must’ve not visited the rose garden in Tyler, Texas! 😊 I was honestly never a rose fan, the smell is too sweet for me, but on a months-long camping road trip I made a point to visit arboretums so found this. Fell in love! Row after row or in formations, so many types, all in bloom since it was late May. Still too sweet for my nose, but what a sight to behold! I highly recommend a visit. Also the Dallas Arboretum if you’re ever in the area - the bamboo forest is magical.

Laura… have you ever considered a gourd arch around/near the kids play area? I think the kids (and adults) would be fascinated by the different styles (apple, bird house, bottle, dipper, etc) and they would be awesome to dry for crafting / decorating projects. Look up the idea online - so many neat examples!

I grew the bottle gourds I think was the name of it over a cattle panel and it was so lush and magical looking walking underneath it and seeing all the gourds hanging down! Also it makes it much easier to cut them off. I think that the kids would absolutely love it And afterwards they can paint them and hang them around the property. ( you make birdhouses out of them) You only need to plant a couple seeds and help train the branches up over to start and then they pretty much do the rest on their own! Just let them dry completely until you can hear the seeds inside when you shake them. I hope Laura see’s this comment and plant’s some! Please heart ❤️ it if you see this comment!
      Thank you Laura! 🫶

The Mackintosh apple is one of the rare Canadian varieties. They originate in Ontario and were named for the farmer who discovered them growing wild in an abandoned orchard. They are supposed to be the mother variety for Spartans and Granny Smith varieties. 😊 🇨🇦

Thx for sharing that, so cool to learn it! Just came home with a pile of North Carolina apples incl McIntosh, love that they’re so crisp and tangy. My favorite is Arkansas Black, but they’re a bit later and best if you let them sit a few weeks before eating - hard to do! 🍎

I’ve wanted to add step over apples to my tiny garden (British heritage in my family) and I’m excited that you mentioned the nursery (Christensen) in the Skagit Valley, I live in Eastern Washington and so happy to have this information so I can plan a visit!
Will this project require 2 prunings per year?

Good morning, Ms. Laura, I used x4 6 feet height green steel Everbilt T-Post with Anchor plate on each side of my arbor dug deep enough then used zipties to attach to the arbor, however I spray painted white first to match my arbor. My arbor was flimsy, too, so when the wind hits and should be strong holding up. Just a suggestion 😊 greetings from Riverbank, CA ❤Mari

Make sure to remove the white tags from your rose canes. I follow a Rosarian and she said to always remove tags or the cane its on will definitely eventually die.

Love the apple arbor. You are so mesmerizing to watch. The roses oh how I wish I was your friend, I would so be honored to have one of the rose bush. I'm glad Bethany will get to pick. The box wood will make it look elegant. I just love all your ideas. I will definitely watch this video over and over and make notes on your ideas
Thank you so much for making our world a beautiful one

Laura, those roses are beautiful. Roses in straight lines is the problem. Creating a beautiful rose garden with meandering paths, water, companion plants, evergreens. Maybe someday you could do that for Aaron. I love your amazing ideas!

It is not a very accurate comparison, only that both get "groomed" or bows added to...I imagine my childhood yellow lab escaping after getting beautified with reindeer antlers, after a photo in front of holiday fireplace.
    Ran around neighborhood, antlers askew.
Feel some roses, would love to escape to dirtland country,
kinda like that labrador retriever...saying no more fussing...
ducking out from deadheading to be beautiful
Rosehips may have alot of life as get vitamin c during winter, so people used to that with wild roses.
That dog got found and lived to see another holiday.

Yes, Christiansons does still have their low apple trees around the Schoolhouse building! They are 45 minutes south of me in Mt Vernon WA. In fact I bought the same or similar arch like this one there for roses! My favorite place on earth to shop and a must visit if in the PNW corner of Washington state.

The apple arch is fantastic! Can't wait to see it grow and fill out. Will you keep the limbs lined up with the edges of the arch? I have to say I love the rose garden. I can see where it would not be very showy most of the year; however, what a glorious bloom for a short time. The rose you are saving for Bethany is so pretty. We are in the middle of a monsoon it seems, rainy and dark, for a couple of weeks. The plants love it! As do the ducks. I think I'm growing webs between my toes!

I agree, even though rose is possibly my favorite flower, i don't really love rose gadens either. It's almost like too much of a good thing. I like roses much better dispersed among other plants. Happy for you for getting to try something new that excites you in the space!! ♡

❓ Could the larger almost-climber roses go out in the dirt lands against a fence? They’d still peek through the trees as they grow, maybe. Anyway, excited to see the the changes to that area, but don’t envy the work it’s gonna take! 💪🏽

Never really enjoyed formal rose gardens either. Just kind of meh 11 months of the year. I went to Longwood Gardens this summer after a long time and noticed that they changed their formal rose garden into a mixed garden with lots of perennials and annuals mixed in with the roses. So beautiful and had me wandering the path, even though the roses weren't in bloom.
