Historically, general surgeons have used synthetic mesh for the treatment of hernias throughout the body including inguinal hernias in the pelvis.

Traditionally, pelvic organ prolapse was repaired by using sutures without use of any mesh. When a synthetic mesh kit was used, it was placed vaginally with needles and pre-cut pieces of the synthetic material. The mesh was anchored to a fixing point in the pelvis, most commonly ligaments.
