I loved seeing your beautiful quilts, it brought back memories of my Granny. She was always crafting. Every Christmas she would fill up big boxes for each of her children’s families, it contained gifts for the grownups and us children, everything was handmade, I didn’t appreciate it at the time. I do now, how I wish I had some of those items. Such thought and care went into everything she made.

Thank you for showing all those lovely quilts. Back in 1981, a very elderly aunt passed away, and my mother was tasked with cleaning out her home. My mother found a cedar chest filled with unused quilts and immediately realized that this was our aunt's hope chest. Sadly, she had never married as her fiancé was killed in WWI. Fortunately for me, I had the pleasure of knowing this aunt and am now the owner of that cedar chest and a beautiful double wedding ring pattern quilt that was in it.

My precious Mother made some quilts after she retired. The last quilt she made was finished when she had been diagnosed with cancer. I love tulips and she let me choose the quilt I wanted - a lovely tulip appliqued quilt in shades of pink and green. Nothing is as precious to me as her handiwork. The love she put into each stitch. I miss her everyday despite being gone 28 years. She will forever be alive in my heart.

When my Grandma and her sisters were still alive, each family would make a quilt square (some would make a square for each person in that family) and brought the squares to the family reunion. We put everybody's name in a jar and had a drawing. The "winner" got all the squares. Then all the aunts and grandmas would get together and make a quilt out of all those squares. I was lucky to have my name drawn one year and I treasure my "family quilt" that was lovingly sewn together by the women in my family. Thank you, Tipper, for bringing back those memories!

As I've listened and watched Granny in videos, I can tell her greatly blessed talent brings her such joy. It brings more happiness to me when I see others use something I have given to them. I was so excited to see this video tonight! I don't have any blood family left on earth but I have a fairly massive collection of their beautiful intricate quilts that I wrap around myself and imagine the love of the women that made them, and that their warmth is still with me, even when it seems like I'm alone. Now that I'm almost 40, I think more about how to preserve their legacy and I am embroidering little tags into each quilt with the name of the family member that quilted it and the dates that they lived. With my mother's quilts, I can sometimes remember the exact years she made them and will include those.
I LOVE the little stamp from Mamaw Wilson.

TIPPER, since you began reading the quilting book and now this video, you have really given me the inspiration I truly needed to get working on restoring my old house. I've been working on it for five years but with all my boys growing up and all the doings with all that and going through some extreme heartbreaking life events I got sidetracked and discouraged. One of the rooms that I have almost done was supposed to be my sewing/crafting/library room. I have so many projects I want to work on but it's the sewing and quilting I love and miss the most. I haven't done anything beyond sewing on buttons or patching clothes in over five years and I really need and want so badly to get back to that. So, I really want to thank you. I have a box of quilted squares that had been my great, great grandmothers'. they just keep getting sent to the next generation but no one every puts them together. My mother had them my entire life. Before she got them her mother had them and so on. I'm the only one in the family that sews so I got them. I promised myself years ago that I would be the one to make them into the quilt they had been intended to be four generations ago. I am going to get this house done one way or another and I am going to make that quilt. That is one can I will not kick down the road.😁💜

      @janh519 8 месяцев назад +3

Don’t wait until you have everything done in the house to start the quilt. Each time you get tired of doing things in the house, go to your sewing room and sew a couple of hours! That will be a time to look forward to, and you will begin to accomplish a lot in both areas!

Your quilts are wonderful! Back in 90’s we could find “quilt” prints in a local store. My mother, my aunt, my sister and I made many quilts with these just by adding a batting and a backing. I still have several of them as well as pieced quilts. My sister and I pieced and quilted many a quilt. I also have quilts that belonged to my grandmother. I have always believed that wrapping oneself in quilt is a hug from the maker. Your embroidered quilts are treasures. Bet you could make a quilt.

My mother-in-law made some beautiful “quillows.” She even made one for me, which touched me so much. I also have a signature quilt made in the early 1900s by my grandmother’s high school friends and family as a going away present. And I grew up sleeping in the winter under a lambswool-stuffed quilt my Norwegian great-grandmother made. All the stories these quilts could tell!

The quilt you thought was a Dutch girl is called “Southern Belle Sunbonnet Sue”. You’re soooo very lucky to have those quilts handed down to you. I love quilts and love making them. Grannie Gazzie’s quilt is a 16 patch. The one before it was a scrap quilt..Granny is an expert crochet-er, I just love her work, such patience and attention to detail. I’m thinking one day Corie will be the quilter and crochet-er in the family, I know she crochets already.

My grandma did too! I learned how to iron starting with pillowcases! Was a little tricky ironing around the crochet on the round edges of the embroidery! We never got to use them, we just freshened them up from time to time! I think my aunt got those and my cousin probably has them ! Both my grandma's quilted .Mom's mother could quilt but didn't really like to! She used bigger pieces and had a quilting bee at her house for a relatives engagement quilt! She liked to bake and entertain company! We made a lot of pound cakes ! My dad's ma was the real quilter! She made t by em quick on the machine for us kids out of flannel! They had a lot of use and washing She pieced many intricate quilts for special presents! She loved curved piecing and made Double wedding ring ! She had my uncle draft the pattern ! She also ,made the dinner plate or improved 9 patch . It was like a 9 patch in a circle ! I have one to finish for my youngest but it was missing the oval piece and I'll have to draft it myself ! I'd better get er done ! Watching this reminds me I'm not getting younger and time Flys! ❤

They took me to a class where what you made was donated to veterans in the hospitals and baby blankets at the hospital. Let me tell you i learned so much. There is a lot of math in making your squares and getting it to match up correctly. I treasure those memories and i still try to quilt from time to time just dont have the funds or space anymore

The first quilts you showed is a "whole cloth quilt", that's taking two big pieces and sewing them together. The one quilt with a pocket is a "quillow". The quilt is folded into the pillow pocket.

Thank you for sharing so many of your quilt treasures with us, Tipper. The solid cloth that resembles patchwork or applique' is called cheater cloth and there are some gorgeous ones out there. I would really encourage you to get the tops finished. They will last longer and be stabilized. The 3 layers - quilt top, batting, and backing - is called a quilt sandwich. The "fold & insert" type quilts are called quillows. The Parasol Lady quilt is so pretty. The embroidered flowers with months of the year may have been arranged for color balance. That is one of the mysteries of quilts and the whys of what that maker was thinking. The quilt of your Granny Gazzie's that you received as a gift is so so special. Polyester quilts wear like iron. The 4 pointed star quilts that you showed of yours and the Girls' quilts is called a Friendship Star pattern. Have either of the girls got the bug to make a baby quilt for their little boys? The purple applique' Tulip quilt is lovely. The batting in quilts can vary from very heavy to light or none depending on the weather needs. The trapunto piecing and crocheting is very unique and special. This was so nice of you to share these with us.

Stunningly beautiful. The quilts made from printed fabric are called cheater’s cloth because it fools the eye into thinking they’re patchwork until you get up close. I used cheater’s cloth to make quillows ( quilt pillows) for my kids. I’ve been blessed to have a few quilts from my family. My favorite is a patchwork quilt that’s been so loved someone patched the patchwork. We have always used that as our sick quilt. It seems to provide extra warmth and comfort. I think quilts are more valuable than gold. They wrap you in warmth, comfort and most importantly love. I am a practical quilter. I do mostly scrap quilting, following the example of my grandmother. My grandkids know they can grab any quilt off the pile and wrap up in it. It makes my heart sing to see them wrapped up in Grammy’s quilts.

Tipper your quilts are amazing and treasures!! I went to what they called a quitting bee with my GreatGrandmother at the church as a child and later in life I inherited a baby blue quilt she made and I used on my sons. I also inherited my Grandma's butterfly quilt which I put proudly in a room in her honor called the Butterfly room.Granny and the other relatives did great jobs.Thankyou for bringing back beautiful memories

My sister-in-laws and mother-in-law are all extremely wonderful quilters. I am not! They tried with me, but I just never got the bug. They actually piece the quilts and then quilt it by hand. Although in later years one sister-in-law worked on a longarm machine. Most all of us has a quilt that has been pieced together by my mother-in-law and quilted by my sister-in-law. Such special treasures. For one of my inlaw's anniversaries the girls all decided we would each make the same amount of squares and one would put it all together. We each signed one square. Yes I did it, but I was helped a great deal. Such wonderful memories. I just remind them that I can take pictures. HAHAHAHA

The one with the pocket that fold into a pillow was called a "Quillow". They were really popular at craft shows. I found one for my husband with the bald eagle, which he loves. My sister-in-law found fabric and made me one of pandas, my favorite.

What lovely quilts and afghans. We were not quilters, but mom sewed a lot. For many towns around there was only one sewing and fabric store. So often even if your mom made your clothes they would be similar to other girl's clothes at school or church. So, it may not be that family members shared fabric but shopped at the only store around.

You are so blessed to have so many beautiful quilts & the memories that go along with them…my Granny made a lot of patchwork quilts & tufted it all over to hold the batting together…unfortunately, I never picked up the craft of quilting. Most all of her were utilitarian, in winter, there were at least 3 heavy quilts on top of me and I couldn’t even turn over…lol…I hope you can find someone to finish the backing on the unfinished ones…I happen to have an unfinished one from a great grandmother but it’s in a trunk (which was hers also) at one of my granddaughters…next trip to NC, I’m going to try to remember to get it & have it finished…also in that trunk is a lacy bed cover she did using tatting…she did lots of tatting..she lived to be 106❤

Nice quilts. I have several my grandmother gave me. One her mother- in- law gave to her when she got married in 1917 and it wasn’t new at the time.
I think your embroidered month quilt was arranged so the colors were spread out. Otherwise she might have put too many pink/red flowers next to each other.
    Thanks for sharing.

Quilts made with love and gifted to family and friends are treasures that last forever as they are handed down through a family to children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. I love the video Tipper and know you love every piece, stitch and color that went into each quilt. I agree with the lady below that Corie will carry this wonderful skill on for her family. Thank you so much for sharing. I may have to watch again as I always hear or see something I missed first time round. God's blessing upon you and your family.

I don't have many vivid memories about my Grandma's quilts other than one of them had the Ohio Star pattern. What I do remember is more about the comfort the weight of the quilt provided on those chilly nights and days of winter in Southern Ohio.

I LOVE seeing someone's quilt collection. Especially when they've got family heirloom quilts. They're so very special! I've got a few quilts from my Mom, Mother in Law & Grandmother in Law. They're priceless to me.
I'm a quilter myself & it makes my day to find an old quilt top in an antique shop. The older, the better. It's a great feeling to rescue and to finish them, thinking of the woman who lovingly began the quilt & wondering what her story was & what the quilt's story was supposed to be. It always feels like honoring her when I finish one. They're treasures for sure. The other day I found a baby quilt top made with 1930's Depression era flour sack fabrics. I wish I knew it's story. Can you imagine my luck that someone lovingly saved it all these years?! I cant wait to turn it into my first Grandchild's quilt. Thanks for sharing your quilts with us!! 💖

Granny’s quilts are beautiful! I call them fancy quilts when they have the star design or some many call it something different. You’ve seen my quilts, they are mostly t-shirt quilts and really I’ve only made one so far that was blocks and square pattern. I’m planning on making a fancy quilt using a pattern, but need to finish other sewing projects before I can start it. Granny has made so many beautiful quilts and I love her crochet afghans too. I can crochet, but limited to just basic stitches, nothing fancy at all in mine. I have a problem keeping count so some of mine were a little lopsided, but still useable. Thank you for showing us your beautiful quilts Granny made. She is a true quilter!

Thank you for sharing. If I were better at sewing I would love to quilt in stead I just hand repair all the quilts those before me made and I treasure everyone of them. I have a quilt called a generational quilt. Each piece of material is from a piece of clothing of someone before you and as the material wears out you are suppose to repair it with a new scrap of material from a family member. I was told the quilt was started by great great grandmother. It is so heavy and just beautiful to me because it screams family.

Thank you Tipper for sharing beautiful quilts. I'm a quilter and absolutely love being able to make a quilt knowing one day our 3 children will probably tussle with each other ( playfully) about who gets what quilt. I've of course have been taking a break because of our newly diagnosed Type 1 daughter but already thinking about what quilt I'm going to do next.

Thank you for sharing. This was a wonderful video sharing the history of each piece. I have a log cabin patterned quilt made by my dad’s great aunt. All pieced together and quilted by hand. It has a small tear, so it’s been put away until I can find someone to repair it. Not a quilt but I also have a blue and white woven wool coverlet from the late 1800’s made by my dad’s great grandmother. These pieces passed down are so special!

Corie and Katie are the only set of twins I know and I can’t believe that they are identical now that’s pretty cool. I’m really looking forward to the Sunday live, maybe just maybe it’ll turn into a gospel concert since it is on a Sunday.

Thank you so much for showing all your quilts. I too have several quilts from my grandmother that I wouldn't take anything for. Curling up in one makes me feel like I'm all wrapped up in her arms.
Also, thank you for linking to granny's crocheting. She is so talented. My grandma taught me how to crochet when I was maybe 5 years old. At the time it was nothing more than a chain stitch, one very long chain. My grandma saved all her bread sacks and had the lady's at church save them for her too. She would cut them into strips and sew them end to end and I would finger crochet the long chain that she would later stitch round and round until she had a large circle that she called a mud mat. These she would place at the door of the summer porch that Papa used to come in from the garden. When I would stay with her when my mother was sick she would pull out the big back of strips and tell me how bad she needed a new mud mat for Papa's muddy boots. I'm sure now looking back it was a way to keep me from under foot when she was trying to cook a meal. I felt so special that she would ask me to make my chains. By the time I was 7 years old I was making a simple double crochet stitch throw for the couch to curl up under. By the time I was 10 I could read a pattern and was making fancy ones.
Being from the mountains of east Tennessee and North Carolina my people have always been resourcefull. When fabric from old shirts and the such were worn past quilting my grandma would tear them into strips and then sew the strips end to end and roll them up in big balls. When she had enough she would make a basket to collect eggs or a trip to the garden or a proper rug.
It was easier that you would think once you learned how to listen to the fabric and know when to add stitches so it wouldn't curl up. Whenever I'm invited to a baby shower I always make a basket and fill it full of baby things and gift cards. Everyone loves the baskets. They are very sturdy because I pull my stitches very tight. You can thump them and it sounds almost like wood. The rugs and baskets I make are what I call 'tight packed'. As long as I've been making them I've not heard of even one that has worn out. I once made a rug for someone that was oval, 5 feet long and 4 feet across. It weighted almost 55 pounds. The lady I made it for says to wash it she lays it out on the patio and takes the hose pipe to get it wet and then sprinkles soap powders on it and then scrubs it clean with a brush. She's been using it for more than 20 years now. I will say that using the fabric is a lot harder on the hands than using yarn but it is well worth it.

Tipper, I really enjoyed this video of quilt’s. I’m CRAZY about quilt’s, love them!! I made my 2 younger children crib size quilts and they still love them. Son 44 and daughter 37. I made all my oldest daughter’s clothes until she was 5. She’s now 53. My sewing machine broke and no money for a replacement. I didn’t know how to make quilt’s when she was little. Time passed and I learned on my own. She always digs me a bit, sometimes, because she never had one 😂😂. A quilt is the most comforting thing anyone coul have❤. Thank you for sharing this 💕🙏🙏

I love the quilts. I have several that my grandmother's and great aunts made and they are so special. I have one that my grandmother made one Christmas and on each square she embroidered the names of each person that was there for Christmas. It was made with wool pieces and sewn together with fancy stitches. I don't use it because it can't be washed so it hangs on my quilt rack. I love the one that Granny crocheted the flowers to go on the squares. Loved the video.
