THIS IS THE FINAL PRODUCT
For those of you who don't know the story of the Count of Monte Cristo it's a little hard to explain what's going on here unless you know it. The movie is pretty good so you could check that out if you don't feel like reading, but here's a simple synopsis of what's going on for now:
Twilight is playing Mondego, he is Edmund Dantes' best friend, but he's jealous of him so he plans to send Dantes to a jail so he can take his woman Mercedes. Danglars played by Applejack is the first mate on a ship. (He was supposed to be Captain but Dantes just took the spot from him, hence why he hates him). And Villefort played by Rarity is the prosecutor (or he's going to become it, can't remember). He wants Dantes gone because of some confusing reason involving treason and his family. Anyway, these men get together to send Dantes to the jail: the Chateau d'If, (its the jail people get sent if other people want everyone to think they're dead). Which is what they are planning here, and that's all you need to know for now.
We did a lot of things differently this video:
It's in colour.
It has lyrics on screen (don't expect this every video, on screen lyrics distract from the images and sometimes we'll just want you to be immersed with what's on screen).
And it was edited in After Effects CS6 for the first time.
This video was a bit of a training ground for us, using it as practice for After Effects and trying out some good colouring. And while it lacks a lot of movement because they're all at a table, Sil was trying to focus on expressions and practice with that.
Oh and something important about the lyrics: They May Not Be Correct. We were unable to find any official lyrics for the song, so we sort of went with what we could find of fan made lyrics. So if it sounds like the wrong person is singing or the lyrics are different to what sounds like is being said, yeah, there isn't much we can do about that.
So yeah, I hope you all like it.

My Little Pony Friendship is Magic and it's characters are owned by Hasbro. We also don't own it.
(You can get the music for the musical on iTunes but you can't watch the musical unless you see one on stage because there aren't any recordings).

As a singer myself, the enunciation on the line "Where the softest things he'll touch are stones and darkness" is so satisfying to hear.
It is. It always kind of makes me so satisfied to hear proper annunciation when one is singing, mostly because good annunciation is key to sounding good and allowing people to hear and understand what you say. When crisp clear consonants are being heard, it gives me a bit of joy to the ears. I'm no preformed or anything, just a 8th grade choir student, but I do know a little bit about music, and a big thing of singing is clear diction, or else it sounds like you are slurring.

Alright. I'm going to explain why these three hate Edmund Dantes.
Mondego (Twilight) wants Mercedes (Fluttershy) for his own. However, Dantes has already won Mercedes' heart.
Danglars (Applejack) wants revenge on Dantes for "stealing" his position as captain of his ship.
And finally, Villefort (Rarity) wants to protect his father from being arrested for treason, because his father was conspiring with Napoleon.

A little Addendum to add:
The first part of the story takes place in the late 1810's after 1815. Villefort is a staunch royalist and supports the Bourbon dynasty on the French throne while his father supports Napoleon Bonaparte. Villefort's father getting arrested would destroy his reputation and Dantes has a comprising letter that could lead to that.
It's amazing how disgusting this song is, yet how... addictive it can be at the same time. The whole discussion is so twisted and devious you can't help but be intrigued about the whole plot those three are planning.
I find this song really silly now knowing that in the book during this scene; Villefort is absent, Caderousse is drunk off his arse, Mondego is crying like a bitch, and Danglar is the only one doing any actual plotting.

even after all these years, this animatic holds a special place in my heart.
Just a question: if the apparent villains are singing about their plan really loudly in the middle of a tavern, why doesn't anyone notice them, and stop them from completing their plan? They are like: "hey guys, some people are singing about their evil plot over there" "Don't worry Josh. Since we're not important to the plot, we aren't affected by their plans, and we can't report them or anything. Just pretend that they aren't singing loudly."

Although I'm saddened that the Count of Monte Cristo isn't appreciated as its own content/musical or doesn't receive the attention or popularity like other musicals or fandoms, I at least can appreciate that you have brought it attention and have shared it with more people who would've never found it otherwise. Despite wishing that this portrayed the characters not as ponies, coupled by my complete disinterested in MLP, I still think your animation shows a lot of effort and skill so great work and I look forward to watching the rest!
deartotheheart Exactly! I discovered this musical through shows like Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables because of the similar musical style. I watched these animatics purely for the songs because I give zero shits about MLP. Over the past two years of loving this show I’ve seen it’s been getting more love than it did before. Before no one knew this existed besides the people watching these videos and musical fans that somehow found this hidden gem. Now I’ve seen more people talking about it and I’m hoping it gets a Broadway run at some point but since America hates Frank Wildhorn it probably won’t for a while. Anyways I’m just ranting but to get to the point, these animatics have grown on me and have gone from a concept I thought was stupid to a guilty pleasure to something I genuinely like coming back to from time to time.
This explains the world and politics so much.

8 years ago, hard to remember who I was then but I still remember these videos. Makes me sad that I’ll never feel what it was like when I first discovered these all those years ago. Great work it’s stuck with me and is a great pick me up when the world looks a little bitter.

at least I *think* "-but I can see it's him or me" was supposed to be Villefort's line, since it relates to his motivation and is the second half of a sentence he started
History is a story told by the ones who sing the lines, I guess

No he did not step on the lines, it just is an artifact of the translation. This musical was originally written in German, and in the german version of the song, after Villefort expresses regret at what is going to happen to Dantes, Mondego sings: "Nichts ist fair, es ist mir oder herr," which translates to: "Nothing is fair, it's me or him." While the way they translated the line works better for Villefort, Mondego has to sing there, as it was written that way.
+ArrlenStudios 99.9% sure it was in English first. It was written by two Americans and started in NYC. The "it's him or me" refers to Mercedes.
+Steampunk Papercut Plus it makes more sense because, in the actual story, the note Napoleon gave Dantès was addressed to Villefort's father, and if people found out _he_ was a Bonapartist, Villefort's reputation would be ruined.

Since this is a musical, you know, a theatrical production, I can actually imagine the main six playing the roles on stage (Hearts Warming Eve, remember? even Fluttershy was there). The gender switch may be disturbing, but I've seen plays having male roles played by women (Peter Pan). Although it's still very weird considering their *deep male voices*... but this is the original soundtrack, so no complaining. Love the art.

Wonderfully executed! On a side note, I kinda agree with you on the lyrics. They're a bit distracting, but I can see why you did it. Since you've limited the amount of animation shots for their expressions it also gives us a chance to read along while we listen. I also really like how each character's lines is associated with their body colour. If you had your own voice actors that is an excellent visual queue. ^_^

This is awesome! How long did it take Silhouette to draw all that?? Does she use a drawing pad or the mouse? And do you think I could do animations as great as those too?

It took her a couple weeks to draw that, and an extra couple to colour all of them. She uses a tablet (drawing pad) and draws them in Photoshop Elements 7. Finally, I'm sure you could do animation like this. Our first one was "This is the Moment", we only started doing these back in December of last year. And we've basically been teaching ourselves since then. You don't even need a fancy video editing software to do this. All of our videos until this one (A Story Told), had been edited in Windows Movie Maker. I was able to buy Adobe After Effects later and that lets me do more (such as move the characters while the background is in the same place), but I think it helps to start out with something simpler. Just to prove my point; "Confrontation" was edited in Windows Movie Maker, has little colour, and it is our *most viewed* video. It's helps to keep your audience entertained during the entire thing. (The song being really good helps too) :)

Just wanted to say this is amazing and I think you were pretty much spot on with the lyrics except I think Rarity (Villefort) is supposed to sing "It's either him or me" because in the Count of Monte Cristo, Edmund has a letter for Villefort's father who is a Bonapartist (meaning he supports Napoleon Bonaparte who at this point in history has been exiled to the island of Elba) and if word got out that Villefort's father was communicating in secret with another Bonapartist (the one who wrote the letter) then Villefort's reputation would be ruined as his father would be tried for treason. So when he sings "it's either him or me" he means that either he frames Edmund as a traitor or Villefort's reputation as a staunch Royalist gets ruined. P. S. If you're wondering why Villefort doesn't just destroy the letter, he does, but Edmund still knows about it and so to keep him quiet Villefort threw him in prison.

SPOILERS for both the Musical and the Book
The worst part about Villefort's part (at least in the book) is he has nothing against Dantes, I mean do not get me wrong what the others do is just as evil but they at least have reasons to hate Dantes, stupid reasons, but reasons none the less. Villefort only sends Dantes to the Chateau d'If is to protect his own name and political position. In the book he even states that he likes Dantes and is fully aware he's an innocent pawn in the game of the Bonapartist's but the minute he finds the letter Dantes got from the other spies was for his father he immediately shipped Edmond Dantes to jail and did it all while telling him he was going to help him get out of this tragic predicament. And he threw his father under the bus because he didn't want anyone to associate him with a Bonapartist. Villefort is the absolute worst man, he could have easily helped Dantes, but he sacrificed an innocent mans life to enhance the profit of his own.
I mean the reason it's so easy to root for Dantes' revenge plot is because the ones who did this to him totally fricking deserve it man.

Well I just got done watching the 2002 film and listening to the musical soundtrack for the first time just to have context for when I watch this. And I don’t regret it.
I just realized that Mercedes and Mondego are cousins. This would explain Rarity's expression at 1:48.

So I've never seen "The Count of Monte Cristo", so I have one question.
Why does Mondego (Twilight) frown and look away as Villefort (Rarity) mentions "jailor"
I don't think there's a special reason for that, maybe Twilight just didn't find the joke funny? Mondego doesn't frown at that part in the musical.

Villefort is a (fairly corrupt) judge/jailer. When Villefort cuts in with that line it solidifies his part of the plot as the one who will actually put Dantes in prison but also puts him in a strong position against the other two as he's achnowledging he is ignoring this crime but doesn't neccesarily have to, making Mondego uncomfortable.

Why did I think Hamilto- because it's a musical and this takes place in a bar with the words "history" "story" and there was writing and fast-ish singing. that's why duh.

i agree, even as a hardcore hamilton fan lol. i mean, hamilton is great but there are so many other great musicals that are forgotten
for those who were wondering rarity is playing villeport he has a job in the legal system and doesn't want dash to go to jail but when he see's his father's name on the letter dash was suppose to deliver he decides to lock him up to protect his father
I love these animatics so much! How you draw is so amazing but a small thing to say but I think Rainbow Dash would have been better to replace Apple Jack. I think Apple Jacks more Kind but Rainbow Dash mostly boasts a lot and is more suitable for one of these parts. I just think Apple Jack suits better though, its just something about her that's very decent..But keep up the amazing work.. TvT

Honestly just the song itself is enough to make me want it. Your animatic does it complete justice. Awesome work on the expressions, and the colouring was great.
It's too bad though that the musical hardly plays any more. :/
