  • This week we took a look through a jar of old buttons we were kindly given. We thought we would try to make as many miniature projects as we can with them. This is us going through the first creative process of looking through them and searching for inspiration. Hope you enjoy x

I’m seeing some very pretty belt buckles that might be repurposed into PICTURE FRAMES!
It will require a steady hand, but if you could cut out the center bar, file down any rough spots, then paint over the area, you now have some nice little picture frames!

As a little girl I used to love to play with my Mom’s old tin canister of buttons. I used to do button weddings. The pretty pearl button was always the bride and she had lots of colorful button bridesmaids. Your video brings back happy memories Thanks. 🙏

Yes I think lots of us over a certain age can relate to this. My children loved going to their grandmothers as she had buttons galore and all sort of other stuff mixed in, I played with them and they too never got tired of looking through the button boxes, I am the same as my mum now, I have loads too lol

One of my earliest memories, is of my father's girlfriends' big metal drum full of buttons of all kinds. Me and my brother went for a visit at my father's bungalow and during a summers rain I spied this big Metal drum sitting in a corner and my curiosity got the better of me so I snuck over and tried to pry the lid off but it was stuck, Mary , my dad's girlfriend came up besides me and said oohh you found my favorite things! she smiled at me and opened the lid, I must of been about 4 or 5 years old and the site of all those shiny buttons was like finding a pile of gold! She ran her finger through them and told me I could too, I had never seen so many colors and designs so sparkly some big, some small all shapes and sizes, we sat for hours looking at them all as the rain poured down and the rain sounded on the roof, and the thunder and lightning, it was fun! I am 54 and remember it like yesterday. I love since then , thank you both for bringing that beautiful memory back to me. :) I love your collection! I laughed out loud I never realized some buttons do look like breads and pies and cookies! Awesome ideas!

It was full of beautiful buttons and odds and ends of strange things. Took me right back in time to when my dusters and i used to play with them. Buttons make great toy money. 😊

I love buttons too, car boots used to throw up genuine button boxes which held a myriad of bits of the owners lifestyle but sadly they are now rare to find. My houses have all of those things you suggested and in my clock house larger buttons make wonderful chairs. One of them back and bottom covered in velvet which is adorable. Also cat bowl from deep sided one with added fish, pictures and all of those suggestions you’ve made it’s the best use of imagination and creates surges of excitement. My Mums button box gave me hours of pleasure and who’d have thought I still like you get such please from buttons. Haven’t made a clock yet but ideas twirling around my head for my French Farmhouse bookshelf diorama. Keep jumping from one project to another but that’s the fun of dollhouses isn’t it. Just love watching you and getting more inspired than I already am.

I have twice as many of my Mother’s buttons with ranging I age from the early 1900s to the 1970s. When I am gone no one will cherish them as I do. There are buckles, glass buttons and Bakelite buttons. Some of them were from her Mother who was born in 1893. Both Grandma and Mom were great seamstresses. I didn’t inherit that talent. I recognize many of those buttons and other items as being in my Mother’s. There were also a few military buttons as well.

This reminded me so much of my mum's and my nana's button boxes - both Quality Street tins! and all the non-button items that were to be found in them. Kirby grips, old plastic pin for a hair roller, curtain hooks from different eras, an old fuse and probably some fuse wire still on the card, and so much more. So much stuff that you wouldn't think there would be room for the buttons!!

The small buckles could be great picture frames. The large buckles could be plate racks. Also, the brass, pictorial buttons look just like miniature, vintage, embossed wall plates. They're perfect already, just clip off the shank.

I loved this little sorting video! It reminded me of the most beautiful black woolen skirts traditionally decorated with small white buttons in some Native American tribes. I imagine their dresses once had hand-made shell beads as decoration, but that sort of ornament was quite labor-intensive work to make a shell bead or button and they probably found the mass-produced white buttons time-saving. So, your video is inspiring me to investigate my own button jar and see what I can use for a miniature item or two!

HELLO!!! I am starting with a large HELLO in hopes to grab your attention. I wanted to tell you that I just saw you examining some tiny flowers and wondering what they were made from. I have a guess. I think they were made from white school glue and a fresh slice, dredged(no brown around the square), food coloring our paint after dry. You pour about a tablespoon of glue into center of bread and squish and roll until you have a porcelain type consistency or moldable clay. Add drops of color, incorporate. Pinch off a small tiny center and add to a tiny stem. Then mold flowers as your wish. Dry in bottle like tiny vanilla extract bottles. I have some I made for my dad over 40 years ago. They are still so beautiful. Try Them. Your Will Like Them. Love everything Y'ALL! AS IN YOU 2! Love from Barb in Oklahoma.

We had a wonderful large button tin when I was little. All the buttons were special - no plain buttons in the tin. Unfortunately it was… lost (sad story, no reason to tell details), but my sisters and I really loved each and every button. We still think about how much fun we had, sorting them, arranging them in pictures, etc. We never turned them into things, because then they couldn’t be something else next time.
