  • For the past six months or longer, I've exclusively gone back to using my MPC 4000 for most of my music production. It got me thinking about some reasons why I went back to it and what I like and missed about using MPC's for production.
Do you have a vintage MPC that you're using for music production? Thinking bout getting one to use? What do you like or don't like about using your vintage gear for music production in 2021? Let's discuss and let me know why in the comments!

Software forces you to keep up with all the lastest items (computer, VST's plugins...etc) which in turn just becomes more expensive over time. Not to mention your completely reliant on a computer working and not crashing on you as well. Don't get me wrong it definite has its benefits but for me persopnally alot of times I just dont want to turn on the computer to make music and prefer hardware. Appreciate the feedback and thanks for watching.

I feel you on this topic. I work dawless. All my favorite music producers use this set up in the past and even though some use a hybrid set up now, a lot of their best music was produced with a sampler, drum machine, and synths. I’ve done all set ups(daw only, hybrid, and dawless) and my favorite is dawless. The Mpc 4K is the grandfather of all the new Mpc lineup and the Akai force! I wish the Mpc 4K get its flowers but it’s still the most misunderstood Mpc of all time and most slept on. Great reasons for using it.

    • @SoundstarMusic

The 4K scared people when iut came out because many were still used to the 2KXL and the 3000 workflows. The 4K is actually a easy unit to work because honestly alot of the features that it has for certain types of producers will go unused anyway. I think the misunderstood peiece about the 4K is the fact that alot of producers really just didnt want to learn how to use it in my opinion but once you understand what it does and can do... it becomes the best tool in the arsenal

My favorite MPC of them all that gets the most use nowadays. The simplicity and swing of the boutique samplers are unmatched in today’s technology, if you have the “Ear.” You will definitely perceive it. The limitations of the MPC’S made you heed to learning that less is more and it taught you patience because one couldn’t access everything we have today, which by the way can be overwhelming (I’m not complaining). Old school here and I have several older and newer MPC’S and revert back more than often. Those pads you speak of are called Fat pads and came standard on the 4K and can be adapted to mostly all MPC’S if you have the skills to upgrade your own equipment. Keep em coming Peace all

I used to have a 60 (as well as a few S950s) but I found that in the modern day the "sound" isn't worth the hassle. For the past while I've been working exclusively on the 4K - its just so easy to use - you can throw a few gigs of samples on a USB drive to have an unlimited collection to supplement your samples. Plus you can even get a USB hub and wireless keyboard (which I have) to easily name all your samples! They really thought of everything with the 4K. I feel like the older units have a little more "swing" and "sound", but the 4K is just so much more convenient and faster and fun to work with.

    1. Old School (Roger Linn units) - 60, 60II, and 3000.
    2. Classic - 2000, 2000XL
    3. Modern - 4000, 2500, 1000, 500, 5000

This showed up in my videos. This was important as I am thinking about switching to a hybrid workflow with a dedicated hardware sampler/sequencer/arranger. I had the Akai Force, which was great; however, the lack of the flip up screen was a minor annoyance and it was heavy. I would get an MPC Live in a heartbeat if they added the same arranger mode they needed for the Force. But the Live and One are limited in how many tracks you can do in standalone, while the Force had 128 tracks. I think for the MPC Live 3 and MPC One 2, adding that 128 track limit and arranger would be ideal.
But this was a good video that solidified my choice as I am eyeing that new Roland SP404 because of the upgrades and improved functionality.

  • @JSoulKeys

Its funny i across this video because recently ive been feeling unmotivated and overwhelmed due to having hundreds of synth VST's AND mixing plugins...little did i know that the issue wasnt myself but all the software i had - it was just way too much. So i dusted off my old korg triton extreme board amd yamaha motif es rack, i learned how to use the Triton as a sequencer and my es rack as a slave device - and bro i actually couldnt believe at how many ideas that became fullu completed tracks ready to be tracked out! Ive made some early 2000's bangers! Lol All the experience and knowledge i gained over the years of mixing, i was able to use at a limit in the Triton due to the limitationsof CPU power, but it was enough to keep me inspired and prioritize the music! I started to research into buying a akai mpc 3000/4000 because thats what Brian Michael Cox used in the 90s. Was good to know that i wasnt the only one that felt a little overwhelmed with having too much tech

    • @SoundstarMusic
      @SoundstarMusic  11 месяцев назад +1

Yeah, there is way too much tech involved in the music-making process today. Years ago I decided to simplify my setup and music-making process and I found that I was more productive and made better music with less at my fingertips. There is always gonna be a new shiny tool that will be marketed properly and make us go "ooh and ahh" but in the end, I have to evaluate the need and since 2019 actually I've just been in a space of like "naw Im good, don't need it...I have what need to produce, mix, and master my own music already.
I think each individual is different and some feel like like newer items they purchase will give them an edge over the competition but instead, I denounced the idea of competition as I feel like I'm not competing with anyone but rather just creating music that I love, write and produce to. I use my Roland XV-3080 with either my MPC 2KXL or 4K, then I incorporate that with Logic and all that it does, with about maybe 4-5 VST's (Kontakt, Initial audio..etc) and that's all I use.
The reason I switched back to this way of producing is the same reason I got rid of my Maschine MK3......just too much going on ...lol Sorry for the long comment and thanks for watching👍🏾

The 2KXL is a great machine in its own right and to be honest with these sound comparison videos its kinda hard to tell what the goal is really. With that being said the 2KXL and the 4K are two totally different machines in my opinion. The OS on it is completely different and it allows you to do alot of different things the 2KXL didnt. The 4K sample time is longer, holds more memory, has higher sample rates up to 96khz, has a digital ADAT option etc.... When fully expanded (or even without being fully expanded) the 4K is in a class by itself. Glad you enjoyed the video.

If you're looking into the older models for simplicity I think the 4K is a really great option and priced decently as well. Beyond that, the 2KXL is another great cost effective option and I really wouldn't look at any others beyond these two in my opinion. www.reverb.com has alot to choose from so you can browse there and search. Great stuff.
Being relatively new to these touchscreen devices, it has been hard not to fall into the trap of getting something with all the bells and whistles only to realise I suddenly did not want to turn them on because they were just overwhelming me, I have made so many mistakes like that, so hearing your talk on the matter just gave me the ligh bulb moment to say enough and step back a recall why I enjoyed making beats and music. The gear literally separated me from my passion and I kept trying to fix the feeling of separation with more "better" gear.
These "old skool" machines seem to have been built to help you capture your creativity and NOT get in your way with what the current developers think you need.
4Ks and 2KXLs look like works of passion, looking over them.

Weird how my music started to sound differently, not just the sound but the arrangement too. My guess it’s almost all sample based so it’s different than using instruments. Never used an MPC before. I know it’s legendary though! I use Maschine MK1, it’s all I’ve ever used. Some of the points you make are why I like Maschine as opposed to a full fledged DAW like Studio One, which I also use. There’s so much happening in a DAW I feel like I can’t concentrate lol! Maschine software is the perfect amount of computer usage for me. That’s where Maschine shines, in concert with the software. But man I would like to be able to just turn on some equipment and go! That’s gotta be a great feeling! And also back in the day I played around with the little MPC that had the built in sounds, can’t remember what it’s called. But even those pads felt great! Each person is different in their approach. I'd say consider how you plan to use the device. Are you a mobile producer or mostly in-home studio? These types of questions believe it or not help determine the purpose and the purchase of the right device. Also consider what it cost to fix the the 2KXL vs buying a new machine. I'd say because you have one of the best classic MPC's already look into fixing that one (www.mpcstuff.com) because they are becoming rare and the value of them is increasing but if thats not an option for you because of cost then the 4K would be my next choice and they are reasonbly priced (but not for long). I personally dislike the newer MPC's because they are more of controller hybrids to me. Hope that helps !

They all have unique sounds that are slightly different to the discerning ear. I still have my 4000. It is WAAAAAY UNDERATED!!! It’s so deep in what it can do that most people didn’t read and learn everything but if you did. Bro - this thing is a monster. The only one that is compatible and slightly better feature wise is the X imo. But for those that have it, you know what I’m saying. For clarity, each one will give you a sound that is preferable to you so it’s subjective. I’d say try them out and buy what you want. For the controller users - Im not hating those. I have the Push 2, Maschine Studio and Jam. Check them all out and get what sounds best to you and is best for your flow. I personally seem to do different things with them just because of the work flow. Boom Bap/Lo-fi? MPC!

I use the live as the interface with a laptop and my desk top and it's awesome for traveling and studio sessions. The MPC x is my go to and it never leaves the house. MPC X, can have one for about $1500 used on Ebay, so much better and more convenient. A much more affordable option is the MPC Live for portable use (and internal HDD capability) while the MPC One will get your feet in the door...if you don't need HDD storage or portability, get the MPC One. All of the current MPC gen products beat the 4k, and, the current MPC gen products have emulation plugins for classic MPC hardware to process the sound and make them sound very close to the vintage MPC products.
I personally use an MPC Live 1 as a controller for the PC and an MPC Live 2 in bed as I cannot justify $1500 for all the knobs, buttons, inputs and outputs (the software between the MPC One / MPC Live 1 / MPC Live 2 / MPC X is the same, the Force is very similar, but is a different kind of unit designed more for live producing... This means, you really just need to compare the hardware of the four units, software wise, they all have the same capabilities, and it is hard to justify twice the price for more IO and controls).
