Quick update. A few days ago Pentatonix reposted their _Hallelujah_ to add VEVO branding and English text for those who wanted it. Otherwise, I think it is exactly the same video, but the repost reset the count from the 650 million it had. Of course in 4 days it's already above 230 thousand, so it still looks pretty darn respectable view-wise.

Welcome to the height of a capella. I will be looking forward to you exploring more Pentatonix!
It *is* all voices, the beat and percussion is all the beatboxer, Kevin, on the far right and the bass, Matt, on the far left. The group has been together for 10 years with only one member change - Matt joined in 2017 and before him was Avi, a white guy with a beard, 2011-2017. It was an amicable split, Avi was struggling with their fast-paced schedule and is happy now in a solo folk/renegade/singer-songwriter career.
Mitch (with the mullet, here) and Kirstin switch up their looks drastically enough to confuse new reactors. The trio (with the blond, Scott) has been singing together since they were kids, though, and are always the same people. The other commonly asked question - yes, the beatboxer can sing and does occasionally. Not often, though, because they need the beats!
I believe the only videos with more views than Sound of Silence are their cover of Hallelujah and their Daft Punk medley. Hallelujah is a classic Leonard Cohen song most popularly sung by Jeff Buckley that most people recognize from the movie Shrek, if nowhere else 😆 Daft Punk is a medley of Daft Punk EDM songs and is the extreme opposite end of what the group does... it also won them their first of three Grammys.
PTX also has original songs and covers basically every genre. I'm sure plenty of people will come in with suggestions for you.

Yes, they are acapella (no instruments, voice only) and the top acapella group in the world. Interesting that you mentioned "Charlie And The Chocolate Factory" because Scott, Mitch and Kirstie met and performed together for the first time in that play when they were 9 years old in a children's theater group in their home town of Arlington Texas. They became close friends in high school singing in the school choir together. In 2011, they decided to audition for the "Sing Off" and were told that they had to have five members and a beatboxer to qualify so they met Avi (bass singer not in this video) through a mutual friend and found Kevin when they googled "beatboxer" on line and found Kevin's video of him "celloboxing" (beatboxing while playing cello) to "Julia". They cover all genres of music so I would recommend going through their list and picking out songs you know and like for starters--all are excellent upgrades of the original so you won't be disappointed. They do have their own original songs too that you would enjoy if you continue your journey through their music and career.

Yes, PTX is a capella. They occasionally use an instrument, however you will see it if they use one. They have been around for 10 years and have a huge catalog of music. In that time they have had 1 member change (their bass, Avi, left and was replaced with Matt who was in the white jacket here). Kirstie (only girl) and Mitch (tenor with a mullet) change their look A LOT, but are both founding members. Suggestions: Hallelujah, Can’t Hold Us, Bohemian Rhapsody, evolution of Michael Jackson, Daft Punk….. you really can’t go wrong.

No instruments at all. It’s called a cappella (voices only). Sometimes they do have an instrument (usually Kevin the beatboxer’s cello), but it will be prominently displayed.
The three in the middle, Kirstin (alto), Scott (baritone),and Mitch (countertenor), are the main vocalists. They have been singing together since high school as The Trio. They added a bass and a beatboxer to form Pentatonix.
The man on the right is Kevin who is the beatboxer/tenor/cello player. The man on the left is Matt, the bass since 2017. Avi was the original bass from 2011 to 2017. This was the only member change in the group.
They have a couple hundred songs from their 10 year career to pick from. Most new reactors view Hallelujah, Daft Punk (medley), or Bohemian Rhapsody next.

They did it all by mouth plus stomps and hand-claps. This is "a capella" and they may well be the best in the world at it. (At least that is my opinion.) As to "sounding dope live" - they won't drop a video on their site if they can't do it "live" in concert. They have won three Grammy awards for songs in three totally different genres. Their first was a medley of songs by the Electro-Pop group Daft Punk. If you think their beat-boxing was good here, be prepared to blow your mind on Daft Punk. Their second Grammy was "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies" from one of their Christmas album and is conceptually mind-blowing as well. It was a group without instruments performing a selection without lyrics. Their third Grammy was "Jolene" recorded with Dolly Parton, one of the queens of country music. This may well be one of the most versatile vocal groups you will ever see in your lifetime.

I've been loving your reaction to PTX so i have a request that I'm praying you react to. It's for non other then PTX's amazing beatboxer Kevin "KO" Olusola. Its just him, in his home studio, making music with his looper and this Man is a Beast. In my view he is the most talented member of the group. I'm not taking away anything from Scott, Mitch, Kirsty, or Matt and Avi, but here's the low down on Kev.
At age 5 he started to play a songs from the radio on a toy keyboard his dad bought for him on X-Mass, 3 days after he opened it ...by ear alone. His dad saw his gift and automatically put him in professional lessons for Piano but Kev also wanted more pro lessons as the years went on, and by the age of 10 he was being taught professionally on the Piano, Saxophone and Cello. The Cello was his main instrument but he is classically taught on all 3 instruments and has preformed in Carnegie Hall twice as a soloist, once for Sax and the other Cello and that's before he was 17.
He is the first person to invent and master Cello boxing, mixing classical Cello and urban hip hop beatboxing together. He's also a writer and brilliant music producer. He has also gotten his degree in Pre-Med and Asian Studies from Princeton and speaks perfect Mandarin Chinese, all this before the age of 21. When he finally met Scott and the other members of PTX to audition for The Sing Off on NBC they had only been a group for one day.
I suggest you react to Kevin's cover of "Down" by Marian Hill ruclips.net/video/IGjg193h4Ok/видео.html and my other fav is Kevin's remake of "Sign of the Times" by Harry Styles ruclips.net/video/hBFlhLEU7uU/видео.html You will blow your mind watching these. trust me and enjoy. I know I'll enjoy seeing you react to them.
    Thank You

Yup, pure acapella goodness. Beat boxer and singer Kevin Olusola is also a concert-quality cellist who brings his cello to a few really special videos. Bass Matt Sallee joined the group in 2017 after the departure of Avi Kaplan, otherwise that's the only personnel change in their ten year history. Hard to tell sometimes, though, because tenor Mitch Grassi changes his look on nearly every video and has really changed since the group formed when he, Kirsti Maldonado and baritone Scott Hoying (tall blond) were all 19 years old. Kirsti also changes hair color and style regularly. Coming in to the Christmas season and Christmas music is some of what they do the very best - I stopped listening to Christmas carols years ago but they changed my mind. Check out their versions of The First Noel, Silent Night and O Come All Ye Faithful. And any of the covers...And any of their evolutions...And any of their originals...and any of their collabs..

Daft Punk, Hallelujah, Imagine, Amazing Grace, Can You Feel The Love Tonight. And they have so many amazing originals too.

There are songs (not many) out there where they DO use instruments - mostly Kevin on Cello or Scott on Piano - but if there are instruments, you will see them in the video.
IMHO, there are no BAD PTX songs. Every one is a masterpiece.

It is just them! This group sings A cappella (no instruments). You have to hear their classic, Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy. Written in 1890's by the famous composer Tchaikovsky. It is a classic Christmas Ballet. This group has no instruments and the song has no Lyrics. Pentatonix won a Grammy for it! They just said "Hold My Beer". Outstanding the way they perform it. Subbed for more PTX (short for Pentatonix)

Pentaholic here! It's what we Pentatonix fans call ourselves. Welcome to the rabbit-hole! I hope you keep reacting to PTX, you won't be disappointed and yes, it's all them. No extra instruments. There are some songs that do have instruments, but if it's there you will see it in the video. They aren't trying to hide it. I recommend Hallelujah, it has like 600 million views and it is absolutely amazing. Also, Daft Punk Medley (they won a Grammy for this one), Can't Hold Us-Macklmore and Ryan Lewis cover, Any of their "Evolution of...(Michael Jackson, Music, Arianna Grande, Rhianna)" videos. Honestly though, anything, and I do mean anything you react to by Pentatonix will blow your mind and you won't be disappointed. Thanks for the great reaction and subbed. 💚

Charlie and the wonka, lol I’m dying. You’re a riot. I’m watching your whole playlist of reactions to PTX this morning (as you can tell from all my comments so far). You should check out Superfruit which is Scott and Mitch from PTX. You should start with Defying gravity and then their frozen medley because they’re not off their album and then evolution of Beyoncé, Rihanna, Gaga, Miley…. And then move on to their actual album, Guy.exe is the funniest video you’ll ever see and it’s where the TikTok sound, “6ft tall and strong” comes from.

This a cover of a Simon and Garfunkel song which was released in the 1960's.
The guy in the middle is the baritone and lead singer. The 2nd singer is Mitch. He is a counter tenor. He sings incredibly high. The 3rd singer is Matt, he sings bass. The girl is Kirsten. She is mezzo soprano. The other black guy is Kevin.
He is a beat boxer extraordinaire. He can also sing tenor, rap and play cello.
The instruments you heard, is their voices.
Check out Bohemian Rhapsody, imagine, 90's dance medley, butter x dynamite, and daft punk medley by them.
You are in for a real treat.

I see a lot of recommendations in the comments I'll suggest an original or two, Happy Now, Sing, Love Again, Run to You --- those give an amazingly broad view of the range they do from a slow and dark, emotional undercurrent to a Club Beat you won't believe is a Cappela.

I had the same reaction as you when I first ran across PTX about four years ago. Had to listen to their version of Hallelujah five times before I could believe that no instruments were being used. They sound orchestral but have no orchestra backing them up. All them. Each member has ridiculous range with Scott Hoying, the tall blond usually on lead having the widest. He can go from mid tenor to deep bass with baritone his most natural register. Mitch Grassi, shorter guy with the mullet in this video, is a natural high tenor but has gone as low as deep baritone on rare occasions. Kevin Olusola, the beat boxer has a beautiful mid to high tenor voice but can drop to mid bass if necessary. Matt Sallee, the regular bass can, also, hit mid tenor if the occasion asks for it. Kirstin Maldonado can hit virtually any female register. They are so versatile that nothing appears out of the question. They can all rap, as well. Matt is an excellent beat boxer who augments Kevin when that is called for. Kevin is one of the very best beat boxers in the entire world. Kevin is, also, a concert cellist and Scott plays piano. When they do play instruments, they display their instruments prominently. Authenticity is very important to them. The integrity of the group comes first and foremost. What you get is what you see. No sleight of hand. Pentatonix is the real deal.
