I can't believe it was always that far off. My Garmin 12 that I still use is accurate within a foot or two with good sats. and a half way clear area and a few feet in the trees.
I literally jumped when you screamed, lol. I remember before we had a GPS, we would print off the cache page and the map of where the cache was and go out and try to find them. Definitely don’t miss those days!
The Garmin Colorado is one of the most terrifying things ever. lol I didn't print pages. Instead, I hand-wrote notes in a notebook and carried it with me while winging it with this GPS. Then, I got an iPod video. There was a really convoluted way to input paperless cache data into the iPod. So, I did that for six or seven months. Yeah, I don't miss those days either. Thanks for watching!
My 5-year-old LG30+ mobile phone, is accurate to 30+ ft, most of the time! Used to own an old Garmin 20 years ago, triangular shape one, gave me 10ft accuracy! Took a while for the sats to show up! LOL! 😎😎
Mines accurate too, it looks really cool I like it. I got it at goodwill. I have a adapter that turns my USB port into serial too for programming. I also have a pair of Rino 110 handhelds I used since I first started cache finding. It’s neat because it also works as two way radio and sends positions to each other.
I'm not sure. You'd probably have to contact Garmin. I'm guessing no though. My GPS was pretty beat up, but it's also very old tech at this point. It just barely worked well enough for this video. I tried using it again sometime after this video and it wouldn't get a signal at all.
You mentioned that "after an eternity," it finally found a signal. Roughly how long was that? I recently powered up my unit, same model, and have let it try to locate satellites for at least 72 hours? It seems like maybe it's finally just time to junk it but part of me holds out hope that this thing could still work!
I think it was around 10-15 minutes. It was a while. I tried to use it again after this video and it wouldn't get a signal at all, so I think it may be toast. It was pretty beat up, so I feel lucky I even got one last cache out of it!
I have not tried the Etrex 10, so I can't really speak as to how well that one performs. I know it can do paperless geocaching, which should make it a solid option. If you're talking about the Oregon 450t, it's hard to go wrong. I have the 450, which is essentially the same, just without preloaded maps, and it was my primary unit for years. I think I'd go with that over the Etrex for geocaching. These days I use the GPSMap 64sx, which might be the best GPS I've ever owned.
@@Tsmola I found two models and bought them . One is a venture hc and the 450 like you have. Didn't cost that much for them both probably didn't need the other one but it's fine lol. Thanks for the reply dude
Lots of memories for me while watching this video. I also have a drawer full of geocaching goodies, including an old GPS unit that I no longer use, but will serve as a backup should I ever need it. Like you, my backup unit it also an old Garmin Oregon 450. I found several thousand caches with that thing before retiring it and going exclusively to my phone. Your usual calm demeanor sure went to the wayside when you accidently pulled out the old Garmin Colorado 400t! It kinda startled me a bit! 😆 Nice custom paint job on the Etrex Legend. You know, it's kind of funny going back to old technology and being completely bothered by its inefficiencies, but not giving one care about that stuff when the technology was cutting edge and we were none the wiser. Now I'm wondering what kind of results would I get if I fired up my old Oregon 450 and took it for a ride. You've given me a video idea for the future and made brought back some good old memories!
I LOVE the Oregon 450. Such an awesome unit. I'd probably still be using it had that button cover not worn out. I feel like that one would age very well. Looking forward to seeing the video if you make it! I know a lot of people are moving to using phones now, I just won't do it. I still haven't had a single phone that outperforms a good dedicated GPSr. (With the exception of the Colorado 400t anyway.) But I think a Nokia flip phone with no GPS would outperform that thing. lol Thanks for watching!
I have a yellow Garmin that we used when we started. It never had a cable. We printed off the geocache page and hand imputed the coordinates. I think on April 1 of last year the satellites were adjusted and older receivers lost a lot of their accuracy. I may be mistaken on that though.
No, you're right. I read an article about older GPS units possibly becoming paperweights too. Actually, I think it said they wouldn't be able to get a signal at all. I was worried it wouldn't work for this video. It took it a very long time, but it did lock onto some satellites eventually. It just couldn't be moving if you expected it to hold them. lol
lol, you SHOULD be scared of the Garmin Colorado. That GPS is more terrifying than Michael Myers, Jason Vorhees or Freddy Krueger combined. Hahaha. But yeah, I totally agree with. People love nostalgia these days, but some things are better left behind.
I absolutely hated my Colorado. It's probably my biggest geocaching purchase regret. I'd always been wandering in circles while my friends were signing the log. Sounds like you had a better experience with it than I did. lol I rely on the GPS Map 62s these days. I hate using my phone. Too slow, inaccurate and it wears down the battery. Just my opinion. Thanks for watching!
Now I remember you mocking me for having maps on my "fancy" Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx. As I recall, something about not needing maps if you were a real cacher. I also remember your experiences with the Halloween horror object as well once the shiny factor wore off. Really not sure if that was an upgrade from the eTrex. I still cache with my Garmin GPSMap 60Cx when on the river as it seems to be the most waterproof after drowning my DeLorme.
Don't what you're talking about with insinuation of mocking. Sounds like fake news to me. I would never say anything like that. lol But yeah, you're right, the Colorado was NOT an upgrade over the eTrex. Which I why I had no problem tossing it around. (That shot took more than a dozen takes.) lol
So now I'm curious to hear the story of the "scary" Garmin! 😂 I'm curious, do you ever cache with a smartphone? It's all I use, especially once I learned you can download caches and not worry about cell coverage.
The Garmin Colorado is, (in my opinion anyway) the worst GPSr Garmin ever released. I don't often regret my purchases, but I regret that one. Thus, why is is scary. lol I might do a video on it one of these days. As for my phone, I have only used it VERY reluctantly. I don't like the inaccuracy, poor battery life or using data with my phone. Also, they're not as durable as a GPSr. Just my opinion. Thanks for watching!
Lol, I thought you were demonstrating the durability of the GPS when you threw it across the room, lol. I've never used a GPS, ok I have bought a 2nd hand unit but I never got grips with it. I love using my phone. The only problem in using my phone is I use also to vlog, which means I can't record myself searching for the cache using the phone, lol.
Well, I guess the Colorado is durable. But that GPSr was the most disappointing purchase of my caching career. lol I should have bought the Garmin Oregon before that. Oh well, can't learn without making mistakes. You should give GPS another chance. Then you'll be able to vlog easier!
Still have a Garmin Emap that I bought in 1999 before most knew what gps was. Still works great.

Yeah phones suck. Just get an Etrex 10 if you need a cheap unit.
Holy fuck I shit myself at the scream

Can this unit be updated for today’s satellite? I use to own one of these and I want the nostalgia boost when out caching

No need, any old GPS will work fine. Very few might have issues though and set their time to 20 years ago but that's not really an issue.
You mentioned that "after an eternity," it finally found a signal. Roughly how long was that? For an entry level geocaching gps would a etrex 10 still be a good option or a good condition used 450t have better features?

@@chrisstroud60 extrex 10 way better and more accurate. Has the nice averaging feature which is nice for marking spots or making geocache hides.

No they still work just accurate. Fad nonsense.
Wow, you take it out for one last hurrah, it drops, and the screen is busted... yeeshk! :D
It was already suffering a bit before that, but this last cache may have put it out of its misery. lol
Dude, you scared the s*** out of me. Fun experiment. The past is a fun place to visit but you wouldn't want to live there.
lol, you SHOULD be scared of the Garmin Colorado. That GPS is more terrifying than Michael Myers, Jason Vorhees or Freddy Krueger combined. Hahaha. But yeah, I totally agree with. People love nostalgia these days, but some things are better left behind.
I have both of those gps units. The ole colorado is my go to...lol , but true. My etrex was my 1st gps as well. Today I rely mainly in my phone.

I just pulled out my old legend, it cant find anything from my dining room, it still thinks its 2015.
It couldn't find the last satellites it used because they are too old. 😆😆
😂😂 You're probably not far off. I wonder how many have dropped into the atmosphere and burned up as space junk since I last fired this thing up?
