I agree with the Queensryche vibe. I grew up on Operation Mindcrime, Empire as well as vintage Maiden. Evergrey really hit the sweet spot balancing heaviness/depth of emotion/melancholy but also massively uplifting melodies. Fantastic band!

I discovered Evergrey with the Monday Morning Apocalypse album and never looked back..Always an excellent and emotive band, their previous release A Heartless Portrait was especially strong. Tom Englund is a great singer!

Evergrey have been around 31 years, since 1993....they have been one of the most consistent bands in the past 10 years, as each album is better than the previous. Tom Englund is definitely one of my favourite bands. I first discovered Everygrey in late 2003, with release of "Recreation Day"

Really stoked that you guys reviewed this as Evergrey is probably in my Top 10 favorite bands of all time.
To my ears, they've never released anything lower than an 8/10.
All of their albums are heavy, but if your interested in recommendations, I'd say:
    The Inner Circle
    Torn
    The Atlantic
    Cheers!!!

Evergrey is a fantastic band. Tom Englund is one of the best vocalists out there as far as knowing exactly what he's working with.
I'd recommend the new album from Ætheria Conscientia that just came out. Sci-fi themed progressive black metal with similarities to Enslaved, Oranssi Pazuzu, and Dodheimsgard, but definitely their own thing.

I’ve been a huge fan since ‘In Search of Truth’, their third album. I highly recommend that one if you want to truly see this band’s dark side. Quite honestly though, they have no real duds. I know I’ve already commented, but I’m super excited that you’re giving these guys a go! They deserve more attention after holding the torch for Gothenburg Prog Metal for nearly 30 years. It’s interesting that you mentioned where they were from, potentially without even knowing at the time 😂

The first two albums, monday morning apocalypse and hymms for the broken all have solid stuff on there. In search of truth through to the inner circle is a golden run. They had a renaissance again with the storm within up until now with The Atlantic being a particular late career highlight for me.

Evergrey is definitely one of the best bands in progressive metal and this new album is no exception, it's really good. These guys are prog, but not in the way of Dream Theater in which create lengthy compositions; they're more like Fates Warning with the melancholic atmosphere of a doom band like Katatonia. All their albums are great and I'd highly recommend you check out their debut the Dark Discovery as well as The Inner Circle, Monday Morning Apocalypse, Glorious Collision, Hymns for the Broken, the Storm Within, and the Atlantic; all great albums.

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal  8 месяцев назад +1

Necrotic Nick- I really dug it. I liked that it was more about solid hooks and not being overindulgent with making the songs too proggy. Definitely a lot of tropes that I dig from bands like Queensryche and Fates Warning in here but I also like the darker, more melancholy vibe to most of the album. I'm definitely going to check out more by them in the future. I've definitely got quite a few recommendations here in the comments for sure.

Been a fan of these guys since first hearing Tom Englunds vocals on the Nightrage album Sweet Vengeance, it was such a contrast to Tomas Lindbergs iconic voice but the two complimented one another. I went straight from that to Evergrey's Recreation Day and the absolute banger of a track "as i lie here bleeding" they've only gotten better over the years with albums like The Atlantic, Hymns for the Broken and a Heartless Portrait. Englund really owns those prog/power metal Michael Bolton vibes.

The Atlantic is my favorite album of theirs. It's not better than the great trilogy they did (Inner circle, recreation day, in search of truth) but I love the atmosphere of it. Their earlier albums (such as Recreation Day) have more of a neo-classical tint to them but not full on Yngwie lol. It's kinda reminiscent to early Symphony X but not extremely proggy I guess you can say. Tom Englund's vocals have a lot more grit to them as well.
On other note: You guys should check out Withering Surface. They dropped a new album this week called Exit Plan. Really really solid Melodeath. They kinda remind me of Dark Tranquility a bit and even The Haunted. Their vocalist has a bit of an Anders tint to his style. It's really good stuff.
