Thanks for the opportunity, Ryan! It was a lot of fun to reminisce and share stories about flying the A-10. To me, there was no greater mission than supporting our troops on the ground. And there was no greater aircraft doing that mission than the A-10. This is just one of many stories of A-10 pilots doing what they absolutely love to do. Thanks for taking the time to share these incredible combat stories -- I think we have a lot we can learn from each other!

I was on the ground during this and remember it very clearly. We had DART ready and were shocked that she was attempting to fly it home. To us on the ground she was our angle that day and we were not going to not get to her. She was the hero of that battle. Thank you ma’am. Hearing you tell your side of the battle with the battle from the ground in my head paints a different picture of that day.

I was at a high kinetic FOB in 2012 and A10 routinely were called in for support because we had insurgents attempt to breach the walls several times. This one day we had 3 prolonged attacks in one day, in the morning, in the afternoon and then at night. The first 2 times I believe we had F18's come in but at the night attack which was the most intense and lasted several hours, A10's did so many low runs around us, one time I stepped out of the bunker and NO EXAGGERATION the A10 was literally 100' off the ground banking right outside the FOB, spitting flares out that had bounced off the ground and bounced back into the air and I could CLEARLY see the pilot in the cockpit. I will NEVER forget that!

Smith, Spring it was the 175th (me), then DM for 6th months....and they sucked when they started. They didn't arm the gun on their first missions and that didn't end well.

I was a Crew Chief on A-10's at DM from 2010 to 2013 at 357th Dragons (Once a Dragon, Always a Dragon). I had Kim C fly my jet often while I was there and found KC to be a very personable, down-to-earth, straight shooter. I recognized her after a bit and she was nice enough to autograph the "Airman" magazine with her story in it. I always thought that the A-10 was ultra sexy and beautiful with that special functional kind of beauty. Great to see KC again getting some well earned spotlight time.

My only complaint about flying a single-seat fighter was that we could never give our crew chiefs a back seat ride so they could experience what it was like to fly the A-10. So much work goes into getting that jet ready to fly -- thank you!

She’s in JROTC and wants to be an Air Force pilot. I refuse to tell her she can’t do it and as a back up plan she wants to be a flight medic/nurse. Kim you are an inspiration to so many girls and I can’t thank you enough for your refusal to take no for an answer and showing these girls they can be anything they want to be if they put their mind to it. It was great listening to this. I was in Germany in 1976 to 1979 at Kitzingen Army Airfield and we had a demonstration of the A-10 for two days. I was in airfield operations so got to go to all the films and watched the demonstration. The pilot of that particular aircraft had been at the Paris airshow just before coming to Kitzingen AAF, and his partner put on the A-10 Demo there. He did a loop and crashed. The pilot was relating the story and as we watched he had to pause to regain his composure as he told us that the pilot died of smoke inhalation because the fire response teams were way too slow.
After watching the A-10 fly I loved it ever since. Then reading about the first Gulf war and videos during the last conflict only makes it stronger. I live in Idaho, close to Mountain Home Air force base that has A-10s stationed there and an Air Force bombing/gun range not far from my home town. So every so often I get the thrill of seeing them come over. If you ever heard of Evil Knevil that tried to jump the Snake River canyon, I live in that town.
Is that Plaque (?) on the wall with the big FT on it from the plane that you took the SAM? Great to have heard your account. Rod

Amazing lady. Superb podcast. Wish there was an extra hour of her telling mission stories about the sheer annihilation a warthog can dish out on the enemy. She earned her call sign but was very polite and reserved about discussing that side of 'the business'. Is that just a combat pilot thing? Ryan is equally coy on that dark topic during his flying career.

Wow! I am a retired Air Force Non-Com (1970-1990) and was never involved with airplanes. I managed Electric Power Plants and Calibration Labs and taught electronics. Right after I enlisted many career field came open to women. I served with the first women in the Calibration career field as instructors. I even had two women commanders. In my opinion, in those days, those pioneers had to be better than us men as all eyes were on them. And they were great "airmen" and I am proud to say that I got to serve with them. Col Campbell I am proud to salute you!! Also, the main thing I learned in the Air Force is that as a leader I delegate authority but retain responsibility. That stood out to me when you said that no matter what happened to #4 he was your responsibility but you delegate authority to #3 so you could resume concentrating on getting your team home. You delegated authority to #3 but retained responsibility for everything on your mission.

Your toughness, education and class will inspire young people to do better even if they don't want to fly fast jet airplanes in combat. My Dad flew KC-135/B-52s in combat too...and never mentioned it again. He didn't do it for that...he did it for the rest of us. I have turned out to be red/green color blind, but somehow ended up married to the prettiest girl ever and we have 3 amazing sons, so not complaining. Well just a little... Got to fly the A-10 simulator a few times and it was so cool...steam gauges and all. It was linked up to real aircraft flying in New Mexico so I guess that is as close as I will get. King of the Wanabees...dang. Another call sign for you: Kool Chick...and I hope it doesn't say something weird about the USAF that you have not made BGEN. Best wishes...!

@@kim-kc-campbell you’re awesome. I have a 16yo daughter who is high functioning autistic and determined as ever that she’s going into the Air Force and wants to be a flight medic and or especially some sort of a pilot. I refuse to tell her she can’t do what she has set out to do since she first started learning about 9/11, Operation Dessert Storm, and so many others that I had no idea even existed that she has been watching since she was about 5-7yo and she figured out how to get on my mom’s phone and open RUclips and hit the little microphone and tell it what she wanted to watch. She’s been in JROTC Since 9th grade, has been on the weight lifting team, and has sending in applications with her Officer in JROTC. If she gets accepted she will be the first special needs kid to join from this high school and the first one one her dad’s side to go into the Air Force as they are mostly Navy and Army.

she's awesome, and I couldn't be more proud, but, and I hope she appreciates this correction. Into big ass tower ACTUALLY did hit a {guy wire} or guy line. It's what attatches to a tower in several locations in order to hold it upright..

Your story about 9/11 was similar to mine. My wife woke me up before I went to work and said turn on the TV and I saw the second tower get hit. The nation wide no fly zone and later the DC FRZ changed aviation as we know it forever.

Gonna have to disagree with the Colonel on the Warthog not being sexy. Always thought it and the Frogfoot were two of the coolest pieces of military aviation ever designed. Otherwise, great ep Ryan.

We were working in the maintenance bay (Minot AFB) when Challenger came over our local radio station. We went numb for a bit. I was fortunate to see some A-10s fly over the base once. We rarely got to see cool stuff up there.

A wonderful story Kim. Bless your heart for your service in the face of death. As a former middle manager in a Fortune 100 company I see another side lacking in most management training. The High Tech World that I worked in has some very weak leaders, they lacked the heart for their employees, they took issues personally. They spend to much time worrying about how they look and the next promotion. You cover the fear issue very well. Managers more often choose people to help that they like rather than choosing people with great potential. My mother was my hero who was the VP of 2 companies so your story blessed my heart. My wife and I love your story and will follow your career......

If you took a bunch of Air Force Maintenance and Operations leaders and put them in a professional company, you would be fortune 500 in no time. The Operations leadership are like KC, they see problems and defeat them, the maintenance leaders organize, motivate and execute all the back-end stuff. You would be shocked how much leadership goes into making one jet fully mission capable for a combat mission.

I have been bless to have been supported by long bow, hornet,Kiowa, mirage, harrier ect.. but the one's that consistently gave me the impression of being a notch above the others were the A10s, regardless of who's in the seat the sheer volume of informations and data going up and down while in the wheel and being able to switch between #1 and #2 in a blink of a eye with virtually no issue or bad read back have always amaze me. Just like the Kiowa throwing hand grenades at Taliban it seems like there is some sort of special connection when you can look a pilot in the eye.

Kim Campbell is a true American war hero. If she is interested, this is the kind of person that we need to serve in Congress. She has shown through her dedication and determination that women have every right to be in combat. Someone needs to sign this lady to a book and movie deal. Hollywood are you listening?
