Be HONEST, did you know the reveal for the trick before we showed it in the video?! 🤓 Also, what other science-y party tricks will you be doing around the holiday table this year?
I learned how to "unfold" a hole in a standard sheet of paper 30+ years ago. In those years, there's been lots of origami but no one has folded space, much less time, yet.
0:45 This is basically how Dido was able to acquire the land necessary to found the ancient city of Carthage. She asked for land an oxhide could encompass.
The paper thing was one of those things I've heard before but couldn't quite remember how it worked. But one thing I knew for sure...was Chuck was going to rip the hole as soon as Dr. Tyson gave it to him lol.
Omg, this video unlocked a memory deep within me from elementary school. I don’t know how I learned about this, but I literally did this trick at school as a “bet I could do this” type of thing. It was never appreciated by my classmates lol that’s probably why I forgot that I could even do this at one point
6:16 thinking of DNA, which is funny because that’s exactly what I thought about when I see the paper trick. Exactly like a cellular nucleus and it’s bound up DNA.
I really hope they check out the Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy! That's where the topic of dimensions comes up. From fairly simple ones like Sophon, to one of the craziest concepts in science fiction - a piece of paper. Those who know will understand what I'm talking about. A great trilogy that makes you think and admire science and the madness of the universe, as well as pride in humanity.
Whenever I hear Nail talk about hidden dimensions I think of the quantum vacuum particles popping in and out of existence. It sounds like a higher dimensional particle passing through our 3 diminutional space. Like if we are on a 2D plan and seeing a 3 D particle pass by, it would look like 2 points moving away from each other and then recombining.
As soon as the scissors came into play, I figured out what kind of trick it would be. Except that my idea was far less elegant, and it involved cutting a hole in the paper, folding the paper so the hole would be U shaped and then it’d be technically possible to walk through said hole by keeping the paper standing vertical. Maximizing surface area however, way, WAAAY more clever.
Always enjoy the video on this channel. The universe has so many wonderful surprises that yet to be discovered and I have confidence Neil will explain them all. Neil your personality and technique explaining difficult subjects is amazing!
@StarTalk A dimension can never be too small for us to see. It's only our minds that are too small to comprehend them. The length, width and depth of a cube are contained inside of three dimensions. They are not the borders of those dimensions. Also, it is possible to make one hole through a piece of paper, using only two straight line cuts, to accommodate the passage of any three dimensional object. It's as simple as 1 2 3
That origami joke. Obvious punchline was obvious. "Damn, bro, you got the whole squad laughing." "He don't want to talk about something unless he knows already the answer." If I ever meet Neil, I'll try to steer clear of actual frontiers of science then. At least three of the dimensions required for String Theory must be quaternion. To quote Tim Blais, "We'll make all physics Hamiltonian."
There is only one dimension in which the other dimensions are imbedded. I would call that the wave dimension, everything is a wave or have a wavelength. Light, sound, gravity and touch. The other dimensions is just data you need to describe something in a computer or if you need to meet somebody somewhere. I’m open for discussion.
Here is an idea for an explainer maybe you would consider taking it up. c =1/sqrt(e0 x u0). What causes e0 and u0 to be the values that they are? I have heard that there is an 'evanescence' property of free space where particles flash into and out of existence. Does this effect the dielectric and permittivity properties of free space? While these transient particles are in fleeting existence, do they have mass and could this be what dark matter is really made of?
Neil, I would like to say I am sorry for the right extremists that are attacking your rn for that interview im disappointed in all of them and Im I promise some of us are intelligent enough to understand what you’re saying also that interview gained my membership ❤ keep doing what you’re doing you’re inspiring me every day
I have a question for you folks and I would really love an answer. How come whenever I see a representation of the whole universe it’s in the form of a windsock that you see at the airport. And the Big Bang is at the bottom and then it all comes out. I thought if there’s an explosion like the Big Bang, it would be a big ball. And all the matter and everything else goes in every direction. Period I think that would give us a universe with the shape of a ball. What’s with that?
It’s a 2D representation of a 4D concept. Progress along the horizontal access is time, the vertical axis shows the size of 1 dimension of the 3 dimensional universe. You can think of it as the diameter of the spherical universe.
Our spirits are replaced by birds after life and fly high watching down on earth. Birds have personalities the dimensions we don't see , the life cycle of flesh
Quick question to production, dunno if it will get read, why dont you use some AI software to replicate Neils tone of voice, for the different languages, you would need translators to give you a script of what the AI should say on those languages, and it will be way more appealing. I am a native spanish speaker, and it makes it awful to watch in spanish with the voice that is NOTHING like real Neil voice. Just a thought, maybe it can be better, maybe not.

I did.
Photos are portals stuck in time... But you can't walk through them.
I learned this from Mr. Wizard as a kid!
I did, I also grew up loving origami
@@bradpott5231I miss Mr. Wizard SO MUCH!!! One of my fav shows and a kid! Cheers! 🎉😊🤘🏼
Chuck was taken out by a dad joke... priceless.
this is the most holesome video on this channel so far
😂
👏👏👏👏👏👏🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Cute 😂
Chuck walked trough the hole right into the setup for the joke :D
‘They folded’ got me the same reaction as chuck
@@danielampaduofosu5590 SAME!!!! XD I love how proud of himself Neil is lol
I heard that their profit margin was paper-thin.
@@noxfelis5333 They were cutting a lot of corners

Yeah. I’ll start believing in this folding business when Neil folds Los Angeles and New York.
renzuru hanabishi is one of my favorite models to remove a hole and add 4 cranes to a crane
OMG I *looooooove* Neil's science jokes and how absolutely proud of himself he is afterwards XD
I'm a baristo at a local coffee shop, and I recommend star talk to the people that come into my place!
0:45 This is basically how Dido was able to acquire the land necessary to found the ancient city of Carthage. She asked for land an oxhide could encompass.
Neil is a funny guy, but chuck is a comedian, the fact that Neil made Chuck put his head in his hands from a origami joke, is hilarious to me. Lmfao
Well the answer was in plain sight
Chuck breaks the paper, trying to walk through. "Damnit, Chuck! You had *one* job."
Im at the museum as you post this….and the Hayden planatarium was exquisite! Have a great day!
The paper thing was one of those things I've heard before but couldn't quite remember how it worked. But one thing I knew for sure...was Chuck was going to rip the hole as soon as Dr. Tyson gave it to him lol.

My High School Physics teacher always spent the last lesson before Christmas teaching how to make paper planes.
6:16 thinking of DNA, which is funny because that’s exactly what I thought about when I see the paper trick. Exactly like a cellular nucleus and it’s bound up DNA.
4:50 this is the joke. This is why you came back.
LMAO @6:24 joke. Saw the pucnline coming but still ceacked up. Neil out-joked Chuck 🤣
NDGT is an American treasure 🙌🏼
The amount of jokes that could have been made but weren’t… such a wholesome channel
I've seen this done when I was a kid, but I've forgotten the hole thing.
I really hope they check out the Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy!

Thank you Neil for wasting my time in the best way possible with science and critical thinking, and laughter!
He said I can cut a hole in this paper you can walk through, I knew exactly where he was going with that, I seen that before
A teacher showed this to me in late elementary school and it was a formative memory.
I’m here for Chuck
4:01 Mans just accidentally tears the fabric of space like it's nothin 😤😤😤
A perfect 8 min of content

Chuck oh Lord nice I am glad to see that you went through with this episode.
I have that book it's sitting on my coffee table I love it!!!

Good to know

Top educator ever!
This is the math version of getting "Rick rolled"
Neil brought Chuck to ambush him with Dad jokes. 😂
We need more hole facts

I won't bet on these hole in the paper tricks, 'cos I'll have to pay per hole.
Me and Chuck never been more on the same page as when he said I have no idea what your talking about

Chuck wasn't joking 😂
This should come handy if I ever need to use a bed sheet to climb out of a window.
That is one damn trick right there Neil!! 🔥🔥👏👏
Love the energy gentlemen ☺☺☺☺☺☺☺
Neil has been spending too much time with Chuck, he's now becoming him.
Neil became the comic relief at least a couple years ago. Chuck's been doing most of the heavy science lifting in the Cosmic Queries episodes.
Would have done one thing differently.
Have the Before the hole be Black and White, after he steps through be color.

4:18 the comedian in me wanted him to scream “OMG IM BLACK” 😂😂
what happens with a 3D hole, like a black hole, when you apply the paper theory you described?
🤣😂 funniest video EVER!! chuck walked right into that! lol
The big bang should be the big collapse and black holes being wormholes seems like a strench 😂
How did I KNOW Chuck was gonna break it? 🤣
he walked right into neils trap,
love chuck n neil
5:00 DAD JOKE! 🤣
“If I said I’ve either done it or it’s about to happen.”

If you can enter a black hole from any point, where do you end up after passing through it?
exactly at any other point
My grandmother could make that cut with the silver paper from a pack of cigarettes. It was a bar game for her. She died of cirrhosis of the liver.
Neil made Chuck Chuckle 😂😂😂
Cutting the strips as small as a molecule of card stock would make a hole how big? Big enough to pass the solar system through it, the galaxy, or ?

Hey guys ,, question?
What would happen if apophis hit the moon?
That was cool!
See you claim I could walk through that, but there's a hole in your logic.

Now they produce granny's tricks😊😊😊
Is it time to invest in Google quantum chips? And usher in skynet lol
Ohh I hoooooollered 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Anybody notice he turned 2 dimensions into 3?
A holesome talk.
