    Nicely done Greg, its a bit late but maybe it will help others, I find a light shinning against the outside of the shell helps to judge the thickness of the body as you grind it, theres a wiring diagram in my video of the one i did if you ever fancy doing another one 👍

      Good advice Richard - thanks! But I think this is my only foray into such deep waters - I am replenished with new admiration for what you managed - all this plus lights too - makes me come out in a cold sweat! 🤣

      @@mactrains haha thank you, i think having dealt with alot of N gauge the TT experience is a little less cold sweaty for me, i love how the hobby makes us try new things and you've done a great job, the Stay alives are a dream aren't they!

      Yup - the stay alive make a huge difference, not even to the running, but just knowing that they will run, virtually flawlessly. Thanks

      Excellent Les - it it really not hard, though the 50 runs pretty well even without the stay alive, at least in my experience.

    Hi Greg, thanks for the excellent content. Could you tell me which decoder and wiring you use and if poss which supplier. Keep up the good work and thanks for developing the resource hub, it's brilliant.

    • @mactrains
      @mactrains  4 месяца назад +1

      Hi Alan - sorry should really have made plain in the video - this is the 8 pin txs chip - as it has the pre-soldered wires to use. The stay alive was direct from DCC Concepts. Hope that helps.

      @mactrains  4 месяца назад

      Hi Alan - I should also have said that I very slightly sanded down the plugs on the end of both the stay alive and speaker, which may have made almost no difference whatsoever, but I think it allowed the chip to sit very slightly flatter inside the loco body.

    Hi there we used a zimo in my 08 and they also do a stay alive too. smaller chip. caroline

      Thats a great option if either you have an HM7000 dongle or don't want bluetooth functionality. Does it do sound too?

    • @damianinCanadaTT-OO

      Isn’t the Zimo pretty expensive? I was looking at that but thought it would nearly double the loco cost

      yes .

  • @Ilmson
    @Ilmson 4 месяца назад

    That was brave. I wouldn't have dared to grind anything off the casing. I once drilled a hole in the weight block of a die-cast zinc locomotive for a steam generator, but that was the best I could do so far, and even then I sweated blood and water.
    Wouldn't sanding the edges of the decoder be just as effective? At least 0.5mm seems to be possible on both sides with fine sandpaper and a lot of sensitivity. In that case, it only hurts your wallet if something goes wrong. But the blue 08 itself is no longer available, at least from Hornby.

    • @mactrains
      @mactrains  4 месяца назад

      I did look at the decoder and considered doing that, and in fact I did grind away a slight angle off the plug sockets to allow easier fitting, but I left the decoder itself alone.

    Hi love the video, scares the sh@@ out of me tho to do it myself, do you know if anyone has fitted a nano 6 pin and used the hm7000 link via expressnet to a select controller to get round the chip size?

    • @mactrains
      @mactrains  4 месяца назад

      I'm fairly sure a number of folk used the dongle for this and it certainly a way easier route. But of course then it means buying the dongle and the select or elite controller if you don't already have one. But if I did have one, thats exactly what I'd have done.

    • @DaveC1964
      @DaveC1964 4 месяца назад

      I was just gifted a select, so I think I’ll try that route especially as hornby don’t appear forthcoming with their 6 pin decoder until autumn 2025, still waiting for the green 08 and the j50 though to try it.

    • @mactrains
