What horrible past experience would cause someone to deduct four stars for a book, just because it has goats in it? What did goats do to this person?

I recently finished the borne tril (strange bird, borne, dead astronauts) and I'm obsessed with them!! I love how you really have to dig for the answers for to some questions/details- the payoff is worth it! There is also a short story called 'the situation' which gives details about Wicks time at the company and his relationship with Mord (pre becoming a bear)

I liked Battle Grounds, but one thing happened that i think should have been moved to or closer to the end of the book so that it had more time to breathe. It felt rushed and not as big as it should have been. Other than that it was great. I think that was what put most people off though.

I liked it but then I, like the author feed on Dresden's suffering enough that White Court vampires are jealous. It has some huge implications and moments though as you would probably expect from a name like that.

Murphy, since you only have about seven more books in the Dresden files at the when you get to the last one, would you do like a series like reading reviews and theories and things like that I just want to see what you think once you get the whole story through

Lol battle ground is tough but not bad... its also like part 2 to the previous book... so it has all the crazy climax intensity from a dresden book... but thats the whole book cause all the pulling at threads 'slower' bits were in peace talks. But also spoilery reasons. I think its still plenty worth the read.

    • @telynns8490

This is the amazing 🤩 thing about reading and books 📚 in general. People can love one book 📖, but then another person can end up really disliking it. 😊 Ya tastes vary, we can all like or hate the same stories. That would be incredible otherwise 😀. ❤ Ok thanks 👍🏻. Be well 🙏🏻 my friend 💪🏻.

There's a concept in psychology called _limerence_ "an involuntary interpersonal state that involves intrusive, obsessive, and compulsive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are contingent on perceived emotional reciprocation from the object of interest" that seems to fit the woman in Letter from an Unknown Woman.
It's pretty understudied, but the researchers who write about it draw parallels to substance abuse or OCD. If the obsession and intrusive thoughts impair a person's ability to function in society, that person may benefit from clinical intervention.
If the depiction of 'love' in that novella strikes people as pathological that might be because it actually is. The phenomenology of limerence might be worth thinking about so we can prepare to recognize it in ourselves or others.

Interesting reviews for Unknown Woman. I've heard it said that more + more readers seem to think they have to agree with the characters or even narrator in a book to think it's a "good" book, and assume that what's going on in the story the author must approve of.
To me this is a pretty ridiculous way to read books and is definitely missing the forest for the trees.
All that said, I personally do not at all enjoy books centered around obsession, esp romantic, for whatever reason so I would almost certainly DNF 😅

I've yet to give any Dresden Files books a 1 star but have given a couple of the more popular ones 2 stars. I seem to be in the minority that enjoys the simple detective stories more than ones where Harry is saving the world in epic battles, for the most part anyway.
It was a close call with Changes because I loved how well it was written but absolutely hated what it did to the protagonist. Couldn't decide between 5 stars and 1 star for a while so ended up splitting the difference with 2.5 stars.

I'd consider doing this but never 5 star reviews of a book I hated. When I hate something I refuse to acknowledge someone liked it so I'd never purposefully seek those out. This can be fun tho😂

  • @meikusje

I didn't like Borne much either, but, like the first reviewer, it was mostly just a matter of having the 'wrong' expectations. I kept waiting for something to happen and it never did. I do agree that it's a tad juvenile though, I wouldn't call it YA per se, but it's not something I would not recommend to a teenager or even a preteen, tbh. Listening to it does reinforce the childish association though, because the narrator puts on an actual child voice for Borne. But overall, it being YA or kid-friendly doesn't mean anything; people sometimes think that YA or kid-friendly automatically means something can't be 'good' in a literary sense, but that's nonsense.

    • @Mark-iv6yg
      @Mark-iv6yg 2 месяца назад +2

      YA?! Uhhh… no?!…
      SPOILERS???
…it’s a deliberately delicate, although subtle take on the very meaning of what it is to be human, the mother/child subversion, the struggling family, the heart wrenching truths revealed about our family members…
It’s a more heart warming and human look at what it means to be human, sentient and drowning in doubt, than blade runner ever was, easily one of my favourite novels
Each to their own though?! 😄

    • @e.matthews

Also struggling to see that perspective. I thought the inclusion of s*xual violence from feral kids made it pretty clear this was not a whimsical ride, but rather that the tone would be eclectic and the consequences very dire.
Also, just finished an audiobook and I had a problem with the narration, but the book must stand completely on its own. Thanks for acknowledging that the impression may not be entirely from the text.
