    Dude, this late 90s early 2000s Neo Soul stuff is amazing. D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, The Roots, the Soulquarians, Common, etc etc. They all basically set up in Jimi Hendrix old studio in New York for like 5 years and made amazing music together, basically living there and jamming and putting out perfection like this.

      Maxwell definitely is Neosoul

      @nightcypha 5 месяцев назад +2

      Common was before the Neo Soul feel. He’d been dropping Hip Hop prior to the Neo Soul movement and had that feel, poetically, until the movement took root and blasted off. He’d also been cool with just about everyone in the movement prior which is why he meshed right in.

    D'Angelo is legitimately a genius. Amazing singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and performer.

      Possibly my favorite musician ever, and he's not even the best at any of the instruments he plays, or the best singer ever. I don't know what it is about his music.

      @@cm9241 As a singer in the R&B lane, I feel like he deserves a place in the top 5 at least. I've never heard the guy sing even one note that's off-key (live).

    • @cm9241
      @cm9241 3 месяца назад +1

      @inclinebench I would put him at number 1, I'm just saying from a purely technical perspective I might put singers like Bilal above, even though I don't like his music nearly as much as D'Angelo's personally.

    On this track D'Angelo played the drums himself, with Raphael Sadiq on bass.

    The song came out January 1, 2000...A tribute to his musical inspiration & friend, Prince....The drums were played by Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show musical director "Questlove", the guy with the afro, with an afro pick (comb) stuck in it, as he plays with D'Angelo with a slightly offbeat (kinda ragged) style for realness & tension. Good reaction!

    D'Angelo at the time of writing and recording the demo version of this Song, he did have Prince in mind. So much to the point he gave it to Prince to Have. But Prince Turned it Down. And D'Angelo created a Classic 24 Years Later that is An Untouchable Record to This Day. Myself personally as a Drummer and Producer the Kit on this Joint is so Crispy. I love that Warm Tape Sound on Great Records like this. 💯👏👌🏾 Dope Reaction, Homie.

    As far as like Engineering stuff is concerned, there’s a lot of information out there about these sessions if you want to deep dive on the equipment and stuff, check out the Redbull interviews for Questlove and especially Russel Elevado (the engineer for this record) . This was all recorded at Electric Lady studios through out the latter half of the 90s, there’s a few outtake videos from that era but not of this song in particular. Questlove played drums on most of the songs on this album but I’m pretty sure on this one D’Angelo programmed the drums on an MPC and played everything else (keyboards and the piano) alongside Raphael Saadiq (bass and guitar)

  • @marcel4002

    Raphael Saadiq produced this song. He is a master at Soulful 3/4 ballads. If you get a chance, even if you dont do a reaction, check out Mary J. Blige, "I found my everything." he made her sound almost like Aretha Franklin. Thanks for appreciating this music...
