  • Welcome on board Delta Air Lines' A330-300 which is home to their older Business Class product. While Delta's services are consistent across their products, the seats are of an older style. The surprising thing is the amount of variation across the different "Delta One" suites they offer if you look at the products across their A330, A350, 767, etc.
    Let me know your thoughts on this Delta One product and this sole transoceanic flight out of Portland!

    My personal favorite international airport is Schiphol. I was on the staff of a conference in Amsterdam years ago and met all the inbound arrivals every day. Its like a city in there with sooooo many eating options and even a supermarket. If there was a break on arrivals , I would grab some grub and head down to the train platforms to watch the action there.

    The single seat with the curtain is likely used as a rest seat for a pilot during their breaks, when they operate with three pilots on very long routes. On a shorter route it may not be needed for this purpose.

    • @PatrickSheaAviation
      @PatrickSheaAviation  Год назад +2

      Probably a good thought. On 2 10-hour flights I’ve seen a paying customer in the seat, so if that’s true, I’d be curious what the threshold is

    • @Colaholiker
      @Colaholiker Год назад +3

      @@PatrickSheaAviation not sure, as I haven't had the chance to be close to that particular seat so far.
      But from what I heard, relief pilots are a common thing - but when they are required probably depends on the airline policy and the laws of the airline's country.
      On AA, I happened to be stuck behind a row of seats designated as crew rest for the cabin crew. After takeoff, a flight attendant setup the curtain and slammed the seats all the way back. When I politely asked her whether she can put the seats upright as long as they are empty, understanding that a crew member may want to recline when they actually take a rest, she yelled at me "It is a crew rest and it has to be this way!". Long story short - nobody used it the entire flight, I was squeezed in a row that was too tight in the first place. Needless to say that this was my last flight on AA.
      To add insult to injury, we had paid for extra legroom seating, but after three aircraft changes within an hour before scheduled departure, we ended up somewhere else - even though it was the same type as originally planned. And of course we didn't get the money for the better seats back either. I never had those issues on Delta, which is why they are my preferred carrier to the US.

    • @Colaholiker
      @Colaholiker Год назад

      @@PatrickSheaAviation By the way, since Delta One seats now show up on the seat map for my next flight (Delta tries to bait me into spending more money for an upgrade), i noticed that on the return DTW-FRA flight (just 8 hours through the night) that particular seat is marked as not available. (Which is no big deal given that there are just 10 seats booked in total on that plane)

      It's definitely a crew rest seat. On my 9 hour flight home from Hawaii, my wife and I were upgraded to Delta One. The only seats left were infront and behind seat 5A. Gate agent said it's a crew rest seat so they couldn't put us closer. I didn't realize why it mattered if they sat in seat 4A or 6A until we boarded and it was the only seat with the curtain. Throughout the flight, 3 different pilots used it. The only time it wasn't occupied was take-off and landing. Conversely, on our flight to Hawaii, we weren't upgraded but I noticed 5A on the seating chart had an X but was vacant once we boarded and throughout the flight. I was disappointed they didn't fill the seat (I was first for the upgrade), but now I know it's the crew seat. If you notice on these longer flights, certain seats have an X without showing a person. If it's a 6 row Delta One cabin it'll be 5A, 9 row it's 1A. That's the crew rest seat with curtain. The X on a seat can also mean other things but that's what it means for these seats typically.

    Yes the Delta AMS flight is left over from Northwest Airlines days I'd say many of the passengers on the flight are making connections at Schiphol. Delta did have a hub for flights to Asia in the 90's. I believe there was service to 6 cities in Asia. The hub was abruptly shutdown and if I remember right was moved up to Seattle. A new concourse was built at PDX to accommodate those Delta Flights. I didn't work at PDX at that time but I was working for Delta in those years and I believe that's what happened. Now besides the AMS flight. Delta will again fly to Tokyo again which they flew for years and the new nonstop to Seoul. Those flights as you mentioned do start in 2023. Other Int'l flights out of PDX are Condor to Frankfurt, Icelandair to Keflavik, British Airways to London. Then the flights to Canada and Mexico on their airlines. I like PDX it actually is one of my favorite airports and I have been to a number of them. Newark is my least favorite on earth. I enjoyed your video. The flight looked comfortable and the food looked great. Portland weather and Amsterdam have somewhat similar weather. I don't think I have ever been to Schiphol Airport when it was not cloudy and foggy. London and Frankfurt also. Enjoy your travels while your young. I know I did.

      My suggestion is, when booking, look at the seat map for the aircraft you're booking and selecting your seat for. It's possible to have an equipment swap, but it's still the best accurate depiction for you at this moment at least. Good luck!

    I haven't flown Delta One in a few years, but I have done it on A330. My recollection was that the toe box in the seat was so cramped, it really was a distraction from quality sleep. I've never thought it's a product worth paying cash for, but pre-covid you could usually find good deals using miles if you looked hard enough. I like the A330 for long haul because it is a wide body with two aisles and if you're in economy, the seat configuration of 2-4-2 is so much better than 3-3-3 or 3-4-3. With the two aisles, it's just so much easier to get up and walk around for a few minutes maybe once every hour or two. Hydration and good circulation are so important on long haul to staying comfortable and arriving fresher. I think Delta overall does a good job, but not a great job. I feel that their cabin crews can be a little bit hit or miss. One flight a great crew, the next flight, not so great.

      Agreed. It also isn’t one of their main skyclubs either so it gets better. Stay posted… later this year I’ll be checking out a couple of their top skyclubs

      A lot of old routes died either because of Covid or before Covid because of less efficient airplanes. I’m sure as more efficient airplanes come out we will see these small markers get their air service back

    No pajamas for J on this flight?

      Nope. I haven’t had them on any of my 3 long haul delta flights in business class. To be fair I don’t fly delta as much so I’m not sure if that’s a regular thing or not

    Amsterdam is a hub for Delta

      They used to be. They aren’t anymore, but they are a major SkyTeam hub so Delta flies there frequently for connections

    When you say "customs" you really mean "immigration" or "passport control". That's where the border officer checks and stamps your passport. Customs is where they check your bags when exiting the baggage area (usually just a walk-through if you don't have anything to declare.) It drives me crazy when people use the wrong terminology for this!

    PDX looks so outdated. That green carpet all over the place certainly doesn't help. Very 1980s

    Flew SEA to AMS 7-1-2023 business class A330-200, a real veteran. PLUS - service, food ok but small. MINUS task lighting dim and not adjustable, very poor video screens - dim and low res, bring 2 prong to stereo audio adapter, so last century ;), lay flat seats first gen, one attendant nice but needed a drug test IMO.
    Delta lounge is the best at SEA, large, great food. Premium check was the worst experienced at SEA. Poor signage, long line, tired employees

    Delta’s food service in Delta One is cheap and very mediocre. Both AA and UA far exceed Delta’s standards in premium cabin meal service.

      I gotta say, AA’s meal service did impress me. I wish US carriers could meet the global standard for meal services with real plates and multiple courses

    Delta One looked fine to me, but Shithole Airport was AWFUL!!! Not only long line in customs, but no WATER FOUNTAINS!!! THEN, you have to board the connecting flight ON A GODDAM BUS!!! HOW F-ING PRIMITIVE!!!
