Man, they should be ashamed of cutting away to all that other footage during "Helter Skelter". That was a legendary performance that, as they themselves said, would never happen again. The least they could've done is just let us hear the whole performance uninterrupted.
I remember thinking when I saw this in '94 that Dulli even looked a bit like John. Some wild shit. And then he goes off and knocks "Helter Skelter" out the fucking park.
I remember that soundtrack being played all over the place during the summer of 94. It was the perfect link between grunge and britpop, just after Kurt passed, and before Liam sang "Backbeat, the word is on the street".
wow i can't even imagine it. i mean these guys were all well established in their own rights, but then get to play the Beatles, what an honor it must have been. not to mention a lot of fun. regardless they pulled it off perfectly, both here and more importantly in the movie. Backbeat was an awesome movie. i say awesome in all the 80s meaning..well done gentlemen. very well done indeed. wish i could have seen you guys live.
I think this is where I started to hate Will Smith...the second they cut to him in the middle of the greatest cover song I've ever seen. BTW saw this on TV when it happened and my jaw dropped. Sure you can say Soul Asylum was Wynona Ryder-rock but even Dave Pirner was good up there. It was like...this mixture of all these 90s indie icons with different styles completely kicking fucking ass. I looked for this clip for like 10 years before someone finally put it on youtube.
The studio gave Thurston Moore a hotel suite that took up an entire level when they flew him out for this, the after party naturally happened there and ran up a $40,000 tab
Thank you SO much for uploading this. I saw Thurston talking about the finale on 120 Minutes not long after and have been hoping to see it ever since. Almost worth waiting 15 years! Ok, maybe it was....
I was never a fan of the individuals in this band (although I still don't know them all) and but I love this record and I didn't realise they had ever done a gig. It sounds like the record too
“This is the stuff that goes on behind the scenes, that people never really get to see.” Did I ASK to see that shit, Will? Did anyone ASK to see that shit? I’ve watched this a bunch of times, and my head explodes with the rage of a thousand dying suns every time that part kicks in.
Ah yes, because when I think Legendary-Once-In-A-Lifetime Performance I think two guys going “Guys, look, I’m doing prince.” And “Dude my nipple is like right there.”

Should be nice, If MTV can do 1 blue ray of this concert...and without the actual & final generic ! Only the music ! In this futur blue-ray concert , let see the faces of the audience when They hear the lyrics etc. In this band if They were not subject of that crowd , ...They should have their own cameraman filming from the stage and pointing the peoples sit.
This was 1994 son, where we didn't care about perfect guitar playing, it was all about passion and having fun.
I can tell
1994, just months way before Oasis to become massive worldwide.
Sonic Youth and Pavement nods in approval.
Play loud fast and with lots of overdrive. Everything else takes care of itself
Loud Fast Rules@@teleman2157
Greg Dulli's lazy smoke break during the guitar solo on Money might be the coolest thing anyone has ever done.
ikr? He tosses the cig like, "time to get back to work..."
I watched this when it originally aired when I was a teen and thought the same thing. And I hate cigarettes.
It’s the only reason I looked for this video. I saw it live as a kid (8th grade) and it’s stuck with me ever since.
The Afghan Whigs shoulda been all over mtv and their award shows
Man, they should be ashamed of cutting away to all that other footage during "Helter Skelter". That was a legendary performance that, as they themselves said, would never happen again. The least they could've done is just let us hear the whole performance uninterrupted.
Yep, cut to a shot of overly pampered coked up "A-list celebrities". The band being so 'normal' really show up how stupid the whole thing is.
Yup. We were watching it on tv live and just crying as they cut away ......
they destroyed the stage
If Will Smith went around slapping random people, that would be one thing. Otherwise, show the damn band.
Helter Skelter done by the backbeat band? It's supposed to be only early beatles stuff.
No one notice, moore playing a normal chord and tunning
A sobering thought: This event took place half way between Beatlemania and the present day.
Thurston playing a Rickenbacker 😮
Crazy stuff 😂
0:12 Money

Afghan Whigs is basically a soul band, Greg is in his natural habitat.
@@redacted2275 So true.
this is MTV Movie Awards June 4th 1994..Dave Grohl post Nirvana
At about 2:30, Thurston puts his own imprint on the performance in typical Sonic Youth fashion.
Greg can do whatever he wants :-)
Almost exactly two months to the day that kurt died. That's insane that Dave was able to play because it was clearly on his mind anytime he played.
Clearly? He seems fine to me.
@AnodyneHipsterInfluencer I didn't mean just this show but in general during 94 through 95 but you can tell dave is more focused than ever
He doesn't care about Kurt
I remember that soundtrack being played all over the place during the summer of 94. It was the perfect link between grunge and britpop, just after Kurt passed, and before Liam sang "Backbeat, the word is on the street".
Greg is the only guy who can sing Beatles back then and nowadays.
I thought dave pirner was damn good also
In the movie it's all Greg, he did John and Paul vocal parts. Pirner is only on the record.
I think I just found my new favorite video. Greg Dulli, Dave Pirner, Thurston Moore and Dave Grohl on the same stage is absolutely mind-blowing.
mike mills and don fleming too
@@davidlindsay9564 OMG that was Mike Mills?!?!!?!?!?!
Best version of Helter Skelter ever
And it's impossible to find it in better quality.
Second best :-).
That was awesome! Awhat a Supergroup! Would have liked to have heard it without everyone taking!
Helter Skelter first recorded July 1968, that’s a long time ago!
That feeling when you break a string at the beginning of the first song knowing that you can't replace the string for the rest of the set.
What a band.
Mike Mills is the ultimate badass!
he looks cooler here and in the BnW money video than anywhere else.
Mike and Dave Grohl were holding that rodeo together.
God dangit, that's the best live performance of Helter Skelter ever! Why cut it off!?
Seriously !!!!
They’re the playing out the show. A regular thing they did back then. I dunno why.
Taylor Hawkins tribute with Grohl, McCartney and the Foo’s would disagree.👍
the same people who treat stage musicians as if they were jukeboxes.
I can remember watching this at stupid o'clock in the morning in the UK, what a supergroup
Dave Grohl is a fucking monster in the drumms
This is a fucking gem!
No-one can beat these songs.
Dulli casually taking a drag off his smoke. Killer stuff.
Dulli used to hang out at a rock n roll laundromat in Cincy. He was a pretty cool dude
...fucking epic...love the rawness of it...
This is amazing. Why isn't it more famous
looking for this performance for YEARS!!!
That's the grunge Beatles !
Ok, folks ?
Whoa. Fantastic. Man, they should have stayed together.
best supergroup ever

Backbeat was a great movie.
Good Rock and roll Thanks good sometimes to hear!
That's *not* rock and roll
just another badass item on Dave Grohl's prolific resume
Dave has nothing on the entire supergroup, sweetie. Even Dave himself would agree with me.

i love Greg Dulli from Aghan Whigs and the Beates and Chris Isaac too..
Wow I’m surprised Dave had the courage to play drums live, especially only less than 2 months after Kurt’s death
He was probably contractually obligated to do this performance, but also to focus isn’t really on him.
Considering how much of a fan Kurt was of The Beatles...it would have been hard
Oh awesom.

At least he was among supportive friends. I thought the first time was with Tom Petty on SNL.
