    I try to follow most of your rules but the ones on minimalist give me trouble. My husband is a horder. I didn't understand why until recently. My husband was the last kid of 7 in his family. His parents divorced when he was 6. There was never enough money to go around and he ended up with all the hand me downs from all the other kids. He was also tormented by his sisters who liked to break his toys. When we got married, money was tight and he taught me to save little bits to fix other things, the way he grew up. We are now more financially stable and bought our first house in our middle age years. He is busy filling up every nook and crany with pretty do dads that I have to dust. Due to a job related injury, we have slept in separate rooms for years. and yesterday he finally got his new bed set up. Looking rather wistfully, he says to me, I've never had my own room or a new bed and I'm now in my 50's. It had taken him that long to have a bed all his own that was new, every bit of it he earned. He never had the pretties he now collects. It made me look at his collecting in a different way. It might not be the pretty minimalist house with clean lines I was envisioning, but his boho style of mismatched objects makes him happy. Made my dusting today feel not so much of a chores but more a labor of love.

    The accumulation of stuff that’s so prevalent now started with chain stores selling cheap clothing, furniture and decor. I’m 81; I don’t remember garage and yard sales before the 70s. About 10 years ago, I made a point of just keeping things I like and use. No more Cool Whip containers in the cupboards. Use the good dishes. No unused cooking utensils or bowls. No small appliances but the ones I use: coffee maker, can opener, toaster and microwave. In the other rooms, just decorative items I love if and when I downsize, I’ll hire someone to sell or donate things. Now, I’m down to things I enjoy, plus a few small family things in a seldom-used closet. Cleaning is easy now.

    I completely agree about tying tasks together - i was taught to treat cooking and cleaning as two separate tasks, but often we'd let dishes pile up cause we wouldnt feel the motivation to wash our dishes after we eat.
    So i started cleaning dishes before and during cooking, and right before i start eating. I make it part of my cooking process. It's really helped.

      Yes, cooking and dishwashing go hand in hand. I can get a lot done staying in the kitchen when or while meals cook. Helps there to be less to clean up afterwards. It also helps to have storage containers handy for clearing the table. I try to make meals for leftovers.

      I clean while I cook and in the morning I’ve gotten into the habit of emptying the dishwasher while my breakfast is cooking. 😊

    • @willowtabby4926
      @willowtabby4926 2 года назад +1

      Living by myself, and not having a dishwasher (not sure if I'd use one even if I had one - I've had them in the past and _very_ rarely used them), I use to rinse the worst of stuff off my breakfast and lunch dishes, and leave them in the sink until after my evening meal. I didn't feel that breakfast and lunch, even combined, generated enough dirty dishes to justify filling the sink to actually wash them. Problem was though, that at the end of the day, I'd often feel as though I didn't have the energy or motivation to _actually_ wash the accumulated dishes, so they'd just end up sitting there, continuing to accumulate, with me reaching a point where I'd end up rinsing what I needed to be able to have even the simplest of meals. It was having a really negative impact on my mental health, and even sometimes led to me not eating, as I didn't want to deal with the dishes.
      Thankfully though, that's changed within the last few months. Not because my living situation has changed, no. I still live by myself, just me and my cat. What _has_ changed, however, is that I went to a friend's house one day, and they have a dish wand, which I'd been hesitant to get, because I thought it'd lead to me using excess water. While there, I actually _used_ the dish wand to clean up my mug, and thought "hmmm, this isn't actually too bad, this could even be rather useful". I then spotted some dish wands on special when I did my next grocery run, so was all "you know what? Let's give this a go," and bought one. It's allowed me to be able to actually _wash_ the small amounts of dirty dishes as they accumulate throughout the day, and _doesn't_ actually seem to use excess amounts of water like I thought it would. If anything, it seems to possibly use the same amount or even less, and my dishes don't end up accumulating to a point of overwhelm throughout the day (_usually,_ at least. There have still been some times where I haven't washed something as soon as I've used it, and there's been dirty dishes left overnight. However, it's been a _huge_ improvement, and I haven't looked back since.)

    Some good tips here. A couple of things I don’t agree with however. I don’t think you should make your bed right away, you should pull the covers right back and air it off for a while before making it. If you think about how much humans perspire at night, it doesn’t bear thinking about to trap all that moisture in, by making the bed as soon as you get out of it. In Europe people quite often can be seen airing their duvets on balconies each morning. If that’s not enough to make you re-think, how about the fact that dust mites etc., love moisture 😱? Also, here in the U.K. it would be totally unheard of to put your kettle away, it’s always on the counter to quickly make our favourite brew - tea 😊.

    I bought Melissa's book years ago and I have many of her products. I've learned a lot from her. But there's something that must be said about the three-wave-system. If you are a professional cleaner with the time to go through your process, it's a spectacular system. But when you have kids, particularly small kids and a chaotic life in the way that most people's lives are, the 3WS is a NO GO. Being constantly interrupted by needy littles or phone calls or whatever, never knowing who might drop in unexpected, you have to clean by PRIORITY. You have to pick up the clutter on the ground in case someone trips. You have to clean up the squished avocado on the table lest a child spread it somewhere else. You have to do the most urgent things because you do not have an uninterrupted block of time for you to go through the entire system. I spend a disproportionate amount of time vacuuming and very little time high dusting. I vacuum before I declutter counters because my floors get dirty 4 times-a-day with bread crumbs and play-dough crumbs and sand box sand. That floor mess makes the house feel much more chaotic than the things that precede it in the system. I have been trying to implement this3WS for at least four years and it just doesn't work in real life in a real house...unless I get up early and have uninterrupted time to myself or stay up late and clean after everyone goes to bed. Yes, I do that sometimes, and the system is great. But during the day when we're in a constant state of mess triage, I'm just trying to keep the patient from bleeding out.

    • @5rgyyuyrgg
      @5rgyyuyrgg 2 года назад +15

      Try to relax.
      There is going to come a day when you can do the 3WS.
      And there's going to come a day when your children are old enough to help you clean
      Start them helping now.
      Give them a small basket with your family members name on it.
      Then tell them to put in the baskets, items that belong to that family member.
      Then tell them to take it to that person's room.
      Also, have them do other little choirs.
      You can buy a child's vaccum that really works.
      They can help you vaccum, if you don't mind, which way the carpet vacuum lines are going.
      You can also buy them a child's broom and stand up dust pan.
      So they can help you sweep
      Then when they get older, give them the house broom and dust pan.
      Make cleaning (some how) a fun activity for them.
      Maybe by turning on some music and dance while cleaning.
      Teach them how to clean avocados of the floor, and carefully watch them. Until you are comfortable letting them do it without having to be watched
      As the get older increases the choirs.
      I hope this makes your life comfortable and enjoyable.

      Somewhere I read that in life you can only have certain amount of priorities and that sometimes you have to come to terms with not having a perfectly clean house, cause maybe is more of a priority having a happy home or raising your kids. I also think cleaning systems are good in theory but difficult in practice, I do most of the cleaning in my home but I just don’t have the time to clean daily every mess that shows up.

    Things I do while watching TV:
    1. When the commercials come on in between the show segments, I go to the kitchen and do as much as I can and then go back to watch another segment of the show.
    I also start a load of clothes to wash. Then after about 25 minutes into a show, there are usually commercials on, so I go back to the washing machine to load the clothes into the dryer. I go back later, when the next commercials come on so I can hang the wet clothes that I don't put in the dryer.
    If it's a daytime show or movie; I will dust the furniture in that room with the TV.

It also inspires me to keep the rest of the room in order. If I have large produce items (spaghetti squash, onions, etc) I purposely put them in a basket on the counter normally kept in a cabinet. When the produce is used the basket goes away.

If/when I’ve visited a friend and they’ve apologised my reply was always “I’ve come to see/visit you not your house, and yes I’ll have a cuppa thank you 😊 “. And I knew that when they visited me they also didn’t care if my place was not perfect.

    one exception to the 3-wave system (which is fabulous, by the way, thank you, you saved me) is: cat litter. DUN dun dun..... or maybe it's not an exception, but i tried to include it in the 3rd wave (floors/garbage) and learned the hard way that i should have changed the litter and swept any litter on the floor in the 1st wave, because once the floor gets wet from cleaning other parts of the bathroom (or maybe i'm a sloppy cleaner, yeah, it's probably that) the litter on the floor is a nuisance.

    Great info. I have such a LONG way to go to implement some of your rules. I have a partner who when asked to help clean picks up a piece of paper and studies it before deciding she needs to keep it. OR ... when I point out something she could clean to help get rid of what we've hoarded points to a couple things of mine as an example of what I can do. True, but it doesn't provide any immediate help in getting rid of the mess. I like the concept of clean countertops BUT where in the world am I supposed to put the appliances and things? Every drawer is full already. It's going to be a LONG haul.

If I ask for help, I tell her my back can't take all this cleaning, she just gets mad or does the opposite. I just had surgery and she doesn't help. I'm don't know what to do except do it myself.

      At about 7:30, Melissa has some good tips about this!
      It might be good to have a conversation with your sister, when you’re both calm, about what standards you can both accept in your shared home, who is going to take on which task, and what will happen if they aren’t done.
      Good luck!

    • @Upstream5402
      @Upstream5402 2 года назад +4

      I have a bad back, too, and I've had to adjust my cleaning methods. There's certain jobs, like kitchen clean-up that I no longer complete in one continous session. I don't have a dishwasher, and standing at the sink for more than five minutes is too painful. I'll fill the sink, wash just mugs and glasses, then leave the silverware and plates soaking, and move on to a sit down task to rest my back. Then back to finish the rest of the dishes.
      Bathroom: I never clean the bathroom all in one session either. Scrubbing the entire bathtub would kill my back, so I'll clean maybe a third of it, and another portion some other day. Spraying on a good surface cleaner, and then letting it sit a few minutes actually makes for less scrubbing, another back saver.

My stainless percolator is used 1 to 2 x per day. and my Nutribullet RX is used daily. I do not have cabinet space to keep them in anyway.
