Roller Coaster Restraints: Explained

  • On every roller coaster you'll always find a restraint; the thing that keeps you inside of the train, rather than out of it. Today, restraints come in a huge range of shapes and sizes, each using different methods to keep guests secure. In this video, we explore how roller coaster restraints have evolved over time, leading to the extremely comfortable lap bar restraints we see today; as well as understand how restraints work by exploring the two main industry types, ratchet restraints and hydraulic restraints.

      well thats not exactly true unless a malfunction happens like what happened to me on the back seat of high roller at valleyfair. my friend's seatbelt was locked into place, but mine could still freely move throughout the ride. the plus side though is that they couldnt get my lap bar to go up so they had to use a special tool so i wouldn't have fallen out anyway.

I always wondered if there was some kind of a fail-safe for the restraints in case they malfunction. It’s nice to know that there is. My biggest fear when riding roller coasters is that the restraints will somehow fail and come open during the ride. This video was reassuring!

      In the extremely rare cases of someone falling out of a ride, it's almost never that the restraint failed mid-ride and popped open; when it's closed, it's staying closed until the end of the ride. It's usually that it was never sufficiently closed to hold the rider in in the first place. And that itself is a sign of a design and systems failure, because the ride should not be able to dispatch in that situation--usually leading to the restraints being modified to keep it from happening again.

      I don't know, some of those early wooden coasters in the 1920s were more insane than anything that would be allowed to run today. Rides that *routinely* injured riders just by violently jolting them around. The standard restraint of the time was just a single-position lap bar (if it existed at all); you were rattling around like a BB in a tin can.
      There were even a few (not many) that went upside down, and in some cases the G-forces involved were so great that they were actually dangerous.
      I do agree that since the dawn of what you might call the modern era in the 1970s, there's been some amazing escalation.

Thank you for this video, it was so interesting to learn more about such a topic.

      @MattMcIrvin 2 года назад +1

      Now I'm fascinated by the question of *why* someone would call over-the-shoulder restraints "Wolverhamptons". There seems to be no public trace of this so maybe your mother coined the term! I found a video of them in use at a funfair ride there, but funfair rides happen in a lot of places...

      @@MattMcIrvin Your reply actually made me go and ask her about this, cause to be honest I never even thought to question the process behind naming them. But apparently it goes even deeper than just my mum, she got the term from a friend of her's who started calling them that, and sadly there's no way now to find out why he called them that either. Regardless, I think it's such a fun name for them, even without knowing the true meaning, but it is quite peculiar why that city of all places was used to name them, especially as you say there's barely any link between Wolverhampton and theme parks. It's open to interpretation at this point, maybe one day an answer will be found.

      One such rollercoaster restaurant exists at Alton Towers. Based on videos I've seen, it's quite a clever and fun concept! Watching your food come to you on a little track is a fun, fresh new experience of sorts if it's your first time.
      I want to know what it's like in the kitchen as they load the little carriage that carries your order, then they send it whizzing down the track to your table.

      any time you get in a car you are putting your life in a much less safe mechanism. If people start dying on roller coasters everyday nobody will pay to ride them anymore. People already die in car accidents every day and it seems like nobody cares.

    Being a larger human
    I hate this type of restraints, I've only seen them on giant coasters. either it's way too tight, or it's way too lose and it feels like you're going to fly out, you lift off your seat 4-5" when you're going down a hill, and the only thing to hang on to are two little handles.
    Man, it's fun!

    The shoulder restraints with the vests are my favorites. I like the shoulder ones because I feel more secure, and since the best fits more snugly I feel additionally safer and also bang my head less. They are so much better than regular over the shoulder!!
