  • Have you fallen for the advice that contrast creates depth, dimension, and realism in your coloring projects? What is contrast anyway?
Illustrator and art instructor, Amy Shulke shares an important coloring tip for alcohol markers and colored pencils but this advice also applies to painting and drawing in any medium. Contrast does not automatically create depth or dimension. In fact, the contrast techniques used by many colorists often destroy realism.
Note this is not a coloring tutorial and not a marker blending lesson. We're exploring how to use fine art painting methods with markers and pencils.

The course that you created for this lesson really makes you think about how color bounces off other colors/objects and how the shape of an object influences how the color appears. I have always liked how your supply lists are usually pretty minimal yet you create so much color with them!!

Thanks for the class review! Yes, I'm pretty Scrooge McDuckish when it comes to class supply lists. Markers and refill ink are expensive and even in my own work, I won't use 4 markers when it can be done in 2. Especially in today's economy, we all need to get the most bang out of every color we buy.
