  • Russian opposition politician Boris Nadezhdin has said he has more than 100,000 signatures to register for the country’s upcoming presidential election.
President Vladimir Putin "has made lots of mistakes", he told the BBC, "not only the special military operation, he destroyed the constitution of Russia".
Photos on social media have shown people queuing to give their signatures and several opposition figures have voiced their backing for Nadezhdin, though many doubt he will ultimately be allowed to run.
Putin has said he would stand again for a fifth term in office. His re-election is seen as inevitable, with opposition almost non-existent and Russian media completely under his control.

As a Russian who gave my signature to Nadezhdin, I can answer to the obvious question that I see foreigners ask here: how did they let Nadezhdin run his campaign?
The thing is that Nadezhdin was around in the Russian politics for the last 30 years now, and he knows the majority of people who work in ministries and putin's government. So, he was not a die-hard opposition like Alexey Navalny (yet still had humane views on what's happening) and they let him try to run this campaign to be a kind of a democrat that everybody can shit on, but who will eventually not get much support yet still be a proof of the 'legitimacy' of putin's elections. Like "look guys, we got a liberal candidate, so our elections are fair". They like this kind of autocratic circus here.
Needless to say, it didn't work out for him very well. Nadezhdin happened to be the only person who ACTUALLY collected all the signatures by himself with the help of Russian people, including me, my family and my friends, so the Kremlin dwarf is going to have a hard time thinking about how to get rid of this guy and the movement. We are, in our turn, going to give him a bumpy ride this time. I have to say, it's refreshing to see so many people unite under the anti-war movement around the country, from Moscow to Far East, to give their signatures to a guy most of them didn't know about - the product of years of repressions. So, let's see what happens.
P.S. If you see A LOT of kremlin bots here, you know very well this issue really hurts some elderly person from Moscow.

I am from Russia and I left my signature for Boris Nadezhdin. I would like to express my gratitude to BBC for finally telling about him. He is a real phenomenon. In the entire existence of the Russian Federation, no candidate has ever collected so many signatures or financed his campaign with donations from ordinary citizens. This shows that people don't just want, they crave political participation because they are tired of being silent. I would like to see more extensive coverage of Nadezhdin's presidential campaign in the international media.

Take it from an American. If your new candidate is to win. He must have so many votes the fake ballets and deceased person votes will not be enough to counter them. You need to have absolutely everyone vote.
Also this vote is a great way to track all the anti-putin sentiments in the country. Something that will lead to another purge of the population if putin is elected again. Just ask the social nationalist party of the 1930s and how they used votes to clean out opposition. Anyone in power will do the same. So you must win the vote or this chance "will not" happen again.

We in Russia have already collected more than 200 thousand signatures* in support of Nadezhdin - this is a lot, considering that there is war and censorship in the country.
    * - in order to leave a signature, people had to come with a passport to the headquarters and fill out forms in support of Nadezhdin with their personal data, sometimes people traveled 100, 200, 300 km to do this, and in many cities queues formed at his headquarters, people waited in the cold for their opportunity to sign for Nadezhdin

Fun fact: Nadezhdin’s surname pretty much translates to Hopefull, and in a way, his surname is very telling indeed.
As of today, he has collected over 180k signatures, from all over the country and Russian refugees worldweide. If not for the need to be careful with the limited resources he has, funded by donations and volunteers, and the limitation of 2500 signatures per region, he would have collected even more.
Nadezhdin is the person that Russians who want peace can finally legally and freely back up, at least, we can do so for now. This week has been truly inspiring and it feels extremely good to finally have mostly concrete proof that there are many Russians against the Invasion of Ukraine. Propaganda has been telling us for years that the only ones against war have either fled, been jailed, their property confiscated, or sent into the war meatgrinder. Maybe in different order.
While Nadezhdin’s chances to win the election are astronomically small, the precedent itself speaks volumes. This is the first truly good and inspiring news in over 23 months of desperation and grief.

Nadezhdin is NOT an anti-war candidate: he just promises to pause the active phase of the war in exchange of keeping all occupied by ruZZia territories, exactly the same as putler wants. They want to take time to prepare for next stage on further invasion. Nadezhdin is a kremlin 's puppet, appointing as "opposition" doll to imitate "elections" and bring voters to election posts.

And it is very delightful to see the support from co-citizens in Russia signing for him! I really surprised to see him there!!! Boris impressed me how confident he tells everybody in English (believe me, speaking English is very rare skill for russian politician) that the pro-war rally powdered in eyes by Putin's office is absolutely not a mainstream in Russia.

I am a Russian citizen and I can tell you this, Putin is unlikely to try to kill him.
He will try as quietly as possible to prevent him from running for president.
He has already collected the required 150 thousand signatures, but the Central Election Commission will try to find the nicest mistakes in his signatures. Although Putin gets away with many falsifications, for example, Putin forces civil servants to sign for his nomination under threat of dismissal.
