Review:
This is the full scene featuring the famous Argentine Tango from Valentino (1951), starring Anthony Dexter and Patricia Medina. Dexter, a virtual lookalike to the real Rudolph Valentino, was a dancer in real life. Unlike today's refined "ballroom tango," this tango makes use of a whip in the opening and closing moments, and Dexter is wearing real spurs. The original tango was often passionate and savage, and evolved in the barios of South America in the mid to late 1800s. It eventually became a popular salon dance in Victorian society.
No other tango sequence has matched the brilliant choreography found in this scene from the 1951 film. It has never yet been recreated for any other film or in live performance. The dancing part of the scene was likely filmed in one take, using a number of cameras for the angles and kinds of shots.
In mid-dance, Anthony Dexter as the gaucho appears to pull a few unrehearsed moves, and the surprise can clearly be seen on Patricia's face. As good a dancer as he was, Dexter was able to bring all the steps together with perfect timing, and they concluded the dance with another unique and original move, ending with a kiss.
The cast:
Anthony Dexter as Rudolph Valentino
Eleanor Parker as Joan Carlisle / Sarah Gray
Richard Carlson as William 'Bill' King
Patricia Medina as Lila Reyes
Joseph Calleia as Luigi Verducci
Dona Drake as Maria Torres
Lloyd Gough as Eddie Morgan
Otto Kruger as Mark Towers
The song, considered to be the tango of all tangos:
La Cumparsita
(Included on the film's soundtrack, released on LP.)

Rudolph Valentino(1895-1926) would be so proud that his legend has been kept alive by this video. Bravo!!!
Valentino will never die.
Agree.
THE best tango in history of cinema ever!!!!!!!!
What???? It's horrible,the worst dance
Its hard to believe that this movie was made 70 years ago . Anthony Dexter even looks like Valentino . Amazing performance by both dancers . Thanks a lot for posting this video .
What's with the weird spacing and punctuation in your post?
Ах ! Высший класс! Слов нет ! Сколько страсти. Блестяще ! БРАВО !!!

It is rare in life that one sees perfection like this.
I saw this movie in 1951 and thoroughly enjoyed it especially this tango sequence, brilliantly performed by both Tony Dexter and Patricia Medina.
Posso solo dire bravi,bravi,bravi👏👏👏
I love ❤️ those old film dialogues. “I hope now he won’t be too busy to see me.”
Some risky move they had there got me glued to the whole performance , love the way she expressed her face every time she was close to the man , they danced it beautifully , love the Tango dance .
Бесподобно!
I must have watched this video a hundred times! The choreography is a masterpiece and the actor could not have been better, every movement, expression, look, everything is stunningly perfect.
The sensuality in this dance is amazing. Not to sound vulgar, but if a woman is not ready for sex after a tango with a man like that, then there is no blood running through her veins!
That isn't Argentine tango. It's the image many gringos have. Totally wrong. Tango is elegant and beautiful.
I agree with Maria, NOT a real Argentine tango! But good for its flashy purpose in the film. Folks, watch some youtubes of The Real Thing and see the difference!
@@mariagallian8057 Absolutely right, Maria!

While watching Rudolph Valentino - silent version of the film - dance this tango, the movements are the same - tough and very attractive. Patricia Medina was beautiful.
Both versions are great.
Staggering musicians actually equal the explosive never to be forgotten dancing and choreography.Unique.
What a breath taking dance! I was almost fainted just by watching them dancing this remarkable dance. Having that Gorgeous Girl in my arms and dancing with Her that very same dance - that could be the proper moment for me to make the following declaration

O LORD please just once let me have that dance with Her and that could be good enough to accomplish my Dream Of Love and Life. Amen!
I am a classic movie buff and love the movies of the 1930s - 1950s. I have a personally autographed picture of Anthony Dexter and it is of him as Rudolph Valentino dressed in this outfit from this scene. Thrilled to have his autograph in my collection. 😊

This Anthony Dexter nailed his Valentino impersonation to the tee! He wasn't as smooth or as graceful as the real Rudolpho Valentino! There's only one Valentino, but he did pretty damn good as an homage to the Original Dark Latin Lover!🖤💘💏💃
Bravo!😎👍👏✌
Неповторимо, превосходно, шедеврально! Браво! Спасибо за доставленное удовольствие! ❤
Tango and 1951? What a wonderful performance ! Even today's professional dancers at international dance competitions will not dance tango like this. Tango and Argentina probably belong together as parents and children.
I would love to visit Argentina 😉😊
I have noticed people dancing the Tango in movies set in the 1920's and the partners look away from each other the entire time. The Argentinian Tango originating in less "hoity toity" locales is absolutely the most sensual dance I've ever seen and I understand that people dance it until they are old. Their moves may not be as athletic as Anthony and Patricia's performance but whose are?
@@joanschilleci7564 The ridiculous theatrical BDSM exercise in this movie has nothing to do with actual Tango. I mean, there was almost nothing in the movements of this stupid piece of exhibitionism that had any overlap whatever with the movement repertoire of actual Tango. Tango is primarily a social dance form noted for it's intimate, focused, and tender communication between the dancers, not some display of violent sexual ambivalence and mutual disdain. Tango is romantic and can be very passionate, but it is not the expression of what I call the War of the Sexes People-- the women who hate men and are attracted to the men who hate women. Hollywood tried to imagine Tango translated into that mode, and this ludicrous and crude extravaganza is the result. But as I said, its actual relationship to Tango is almost nil-- basically limited to nothing but the choice of the musical piece "La Cumparasita." Furthermore, Tango is not an outgrowth of rural Argentine gaucho culture, but an expression that evolved among the international working class of urban Buenas Aires.
This tango is Uruguayan, by Matos Rodríguez. First played in the Café y Confitería La Giralda, Andes and 18 de Julio.
Самое красивое и страстное танго,из всех что я видела,и самое главное что под музыку ни какого лишнего движения. Костюмы и те были подобраны под это танго,а артисты просто талант. Молодцы.❤
The true passion between a man and a woman, dancing as how our each body was made, twist and turn. So beautiful.

What a way to spoil or destroy the essence of a cultural manifestation. He wasn't even a gaucho because he himself would never use that circus whip.

The dance performed was Anthony Dexter, an actor that looked like Valentino. Both were handsome. Valentino died early.
Considered the anthem of tango music and one of the most popular tunes in history. La Cumparsita was composed in 1917 by Uruguayan pianist Gerardo Matos Rodríguez and premiered in Montevideo by the Argentine Orchestra of Roberto Firpo.
