Five Nights at Freddy's is a 2023 American supernatural horror film based on the video game franchise of the same name created by Scott Cawthon. Directed by Emma Tammi, who co-wrote the screenplay with Cawthon and Seth Cuddeback, from a story by Cawthon, Chris Lee Hill, and Tyler MacIntyre, the film stars Josh Hutcherson as a troubled security guard who accepts a night-time job at an abandoned family entertainment center, where he discovers its four animatronic mascots are alive and kill anyone that is still there after midnight. Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Matthew Lillard appear in supporting roles.

I think Doug's point about the movie being focused on the humans being a thing fans of the game might not enjoy would be correct if this movie came out shortly after the first three games. But since fnaf3 and beyond the story and focus of the franchise has moved more towards the human characters.

I am a FNaF fan and I did watch it yesterday. I enjoyed it, along with the audience that watched it with me, very positive cheering at the end, but I do kinda agree with the whole lack of creepy scenes with the animatronics. They are not terrible, I do really remember them well and they did a good job with their potrayal in the film. I do think that they could have rebalanced their sympathetic and creepy sides a little bit, but I still had a lot of good time watching it. It's clearly not for all people, I read some reviews from non-FNAF fans, majority of them negative, but if you found it almost reccomendable, I say it differs between everyone. I am happy I saw it and will likely go to see the sequels.

I thought it was kinda odd that they tried to make the animatronics seem like they were nice right after we watched them murder some people. that seemed a bit confused. I enjoyed them picking off the looters one by one, that was genuinely creepy and cool, and the scenes with them interacting with the little sister and making her happy was very wholesome and reminds you that they're just kids in those bodies....but it really feels like those two scenes should've been swapped around so that them murdering those people was a big shock after we've been endeared to them.

With the fact that this movie took 8 years to make, it originally started with WB, then switch to Blumhouse, went through a TON of scripts... this movie came out better than I thought it would.
Seeing Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy on the big-screen was just an absolute delight to see, and as for the animatronics killing people.. I think with how they handled it, it made sense. In the following games, they attack one guard, so trying to improve on a game concept where you just sit in one place and just click on each different camera, is a bit tad bit difficult to adapt without making some creative changes.
Also with the Vanessa twist at the end, I'm currently on the fence with it because believe me when I say.. NONE of what happened with that twist happens in the games. There is a Vanessa in one of the future games that a ton of people were speculating that they would follow the similar storyline... but they pulled a 180 and changed not only her story, but the story from the lore in general. So that I'm still on the fence with.
But aside from that, as a long time Five Nights at Freddy's fan, I was personally satisfied with the final result. Despite a few nitpicks, I'm just glad this movie finally exists and hopefully we'll get more sequels in the future.
I see this as a horror gateway movie, where kids can like it fine, and this could lead them into wanting to watch other horror movies. Nice review as always Doug! Hope you fully get better from the shingles aftermath.

    • @baphomeat
      @baphomeat 9 месяцев назад +8

"NONE of what happened with that twist happens in the games." - Except for Vanessa having a very close relationship to William afton, so cloe infact that she even dons a Rabbit persona in her alter ego Vanny, which she acquired during the Help Wanted storyline.
The movie follows the same logic as the books - same themes different stories. This version of the story though kind of solidifies that Vanessa just MIGHT be a robot reconstruction of Elizabeth (Aftons Daughter) after her demise at the hands of Baby. This robot theory could explain how she exists here (in the 90s) in about roughly the same age as she is in the mid/late 2020s (Help Wanted / Security Breach). She is the RELUCTANT follower. She was ordered around by her father in life, and was only set free by Mike Schmidt (potentially one of Henries kids if my personal theory about Garrett being the movies Crying Child pans out). After the 'defeat' of her father she then spends the next few years helping right his wrongs, eventually leading her to the VR Studio working on a game using some old parts, including circuit boards full of Remnant and Agony from Springtrap after the first attempt to burn him in Fazbear Frights didn't pan out, ultimately where I feel the Second Movie is going to end (because Lillard says he was signed on for a 3 movie deal).
      Parrallels that support my claims.
      1. References to people having robot kids:
----A. Charlie from the Silver Eyes story.
----B. Hanks Mimic from Tales from the Pizzaplex #3 - Cleithrophobia
----C. The Mimic from Security Breach (sort of confirms the existence of Hanks robot in TFtP3)
----D. Eleanor from Fazbear Frights 1: Into the Pit
      2. References about Vanny having a relationships with Afton and Elizabeth
----A. She is literally Aftons Daughter in the Movie (Which Afton only had one... Elizabeth).
----B. She becomes the Reluctant Follower after Glitchtrap takes control of her. (More on this later)
----C. After being taken over by Glitchtrap she becomes two people. Vanessa and Vanny.
----D. She visibly has a visible fear and dislike for a VERY baby-esque animatronic in the movie.
2b. Vanny has a duality about her. One that supports afton and one that doesn't.
----A. In one of the endings you can drop vanny off of a cliff, and still see Vanessa looking down at her.
----B. The Vanny mask from Ruin integrates the human brain with AR/VR components making you man and machine.
----C. The film shows a conflict in Vannessa. Help her father commit more crimes or finally put a stop to him.
      3. Dualities - Across these games we get a sense of duality in motives.
----A. Henry vs William - Kind toymaker and a violent murderer.
----B. Ghost Possessed Suits looking to cause pain vs Advanced security robots meant to protect kids (fnaf 2).
----C. Giving up your past to live in the present (Moving on from Garrett to be with Abby).
----D. Helping William unalive Mike or helping Mike stop him.
----E. Tiger Rock, two personalities one robot.
----F. The Daycare Attendant, two personalities one robot.
----G. Help the Animatronics in Ruin or don't.
----H. The (alleged) two Gregories at the end of Ruin.
This franchise seems to love robotic additions to both the Afton and Emily families, often times coming from the horrific loss of a loved one (much like Garretts abduction... where we don't see Abby during this flashback meaning she was born (created) AFTER his abduction).
It also loves to symbolize Vanny having a strange tug of war with her will against Afton and his influence. Especially if you accept that Vanessa = Elizabeth... she died because she went against his will, something that he as an egomaniac doesn't like... which is why he was VERY angry when she disobeyed him right before shooting him.
Do I have the answer? Probably not... but that's the fun of this franchise... and that's why this movie is a perfect companion. It tells the story is a VERY Scott Cawthon method... confusing and full of plotholes... but somehow you find yourself sort of understanding it when you dig deep... but never understanding enough of it to satisfy that part of your brain that likes things being tied up in a neat bow.

@baphomeat okie dude, jeez, I just typed it wrong. I know Vanessa was an accomplice with Afton in Security Breach, but the idea of her being a robotic recreation of Elizabeth could be a bit of a stretch. Keyword: a BIT of a stretch. Maybe the books made that the case, but from as of right now, I'm just on the fence with that idea. And who knows, maybe when we get more sequels in the future, they can try to tap more into it. Who's knows?
But like I said, with that opinion aside, the movie was still awesome! I still absolutely loved it, and I can't wait to see more in the future!

I am a huge FNAF fan, and I absolutely loved the movie. I think they definitely did it a disservice by hyping the horror that was 100% not there, but it was still a very fun experience and I really like what they chose to do with the lore, and how they weaved certain canons together. I might be a simple creature, but I felt like it was a successful video game movie, and I absolutely adored the animatronics themselves. I do wish they had done more, but at least they were beautiful and dynamic, and their story was told in a fun, interesting new way.

The world building, set/sound design, breath taking Jim Henson practical effects, and great performances by all. Everything was really well done and there was much effort and love put into this movie. It delivers very iconic moments and keeps you guessing with new story twists that even the most learned FNAF fans won't see coming. It is a joy to watch. I’m glad you really gave it a chance! I’ve been a fan for a long time, and the lore was changed up a little but followed the events good enough.
It was great to hear a review from someone who didn’t know much of the movie, it felt like a good middle ground for a review.
I think the film is so plot heavy because that’s how the story always has been. In the games, it’s all scares but for lore, you kinda have to dig for it to understand what’s happening. In my mind, they wanted general audiences to have both plot and scares.
I agree, some scenes of dialogue were dense and boring. But looking past its flaws, it was just a fun experience! I don’t think this movie is trying to be a masterpiece, and for me, I don’t need it to be. It was great to see it come to the big screen.

I honestly find the idea of the games very creative! Animatronics from a CHILDREN’S pizzeria coming to life at night and killing people. That’s an awesome idea and it all stemmed from one critic of the game creator’s last game before Freddy’s saying “The main characters are so ugly, they look like creepy animatronics.” That’s where he got the idea and I love how it’s become so popular! The thing about Freddy’s is the atmosphere. The atmosphere is amazing and creepy. That and jump scares 😂 I had high hopes for this movie and seeing that this movie is getting bad reviews, kinda puts me off it a little. But I might check it out.

Feels like people who aren't fans have all just seen a little gameplay and assumed this movie would be watching Freddy and the gang kill people rather than tell the actual story of the series that has been hidden and teased in the games from the beginning. No fan went into this thinking the animatronics were going to be killing a ton of people. These are children ghosts in robot costumes. They aren't evil. In the games, they go after the security guard because they were killed by an employee and your character is the son of their murderer so your character looks like the man who killed them. They killed more people in the movie than they did in the games. Although I do think they could have mentioned the suits smelling bad or we see some dried blood on the fur or something more to hint at the bodies inside. But I guess after twenty years the smell is probably gone and I'm sure Afton washed away the evidence so it makes sense.

There’s a lot of fan-service and small references you’d only catch knowing the games and characters well enough. But was I blown away? I am deeply satisfied the moment got included, as it is my single best and most legendary moment in the whole franchise but I did wish it would have been given more of the.... mystique and awe of the original moment. Like you got Purple Guy and after 3 games and one meeting with the scariest animatronic who is like a zombie at the same time you finally find out what happened. Big part of what made that moment _that_ moment for me was the silence. But it was still pretty similar anyway and the set up was so right, they really did pour love into it, it all was leading up to that. And while the actor wasn't all purple skinned and with pitch white eyes xD he did an awesome job at playing both a normal guy and unhinged purple guy.
To remember when Purple Guy was just this quirky smiling young man with a mullet and a love for toast, we did go off the rails with that one.

This is the best review I’ve seen on this movie so far! I thought you explained your case well, and it really seemed like you gave the movie a chance.
From what I’m seeing it looks like the movie was improperly advertised.
The FNAF games haven’t REALLY been about monster animatronics killing since the first game I would say. From 2 and onwards, the games were getting more and more story (lore) oriented to the point where you could say when a new FNAF installment came out, people were excited to see the story get added onto or continue rather than a new spooky session.
The movie’s story reminds me a lot of what storytelling is like in modern day FNAF where there’s more of a focus on the human characters and how they’ve been affected by the tragedy that is Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria.
Mainly, the FNAF movie is exactly what a modern day FNAF fan would expect. But most folks probably don’t really know anything about FNAF beyond the basic premise of the first game, which modern FNAF has evolved into something a lot different since then. A lot can happen in 8 years!

A lot of people complained about the 3rd game's jumpscare not being scary enough, and the next game Scott focused on really scary jumpscares, but the story was confusing, so the next game he focused on story. So, knowing that the creator can take feedback and improve from it gives me hope for the sequels. I think the movie was good. It could have been better, but I think after a certain point you have to say "Good enough" and try to do better on the next project.

I suppose the unfortunate thing about the FNAF movie is that if you've been a fan since the very beginning, way back in 2014, then you're likely to come out of this film satisfied. As fans know this film essentially takes place in its own universe and it implements the basic core elements of FNAF 1 with the dead kids and some bits of FNAF 3 with the spring lock suit William died in. Unless you haven't played or seen any of the games and aren't well-versed in the lore to some extent, then you won't understand specific details and references. But if you do know your FNAF stuff, you'll find out that the FNAF franchise isn't only about the animatronics, but also the people. But I think that this movie serves the sole purpose of introducing us to this world and the two sequels they plan on making could potentially be something even bigger.

It may not be everyone's cup of tea, and I can see why people were disappointed in it. But I am in love with it. Genuinely want to go back to theaters to see it a second time. It's such a love letter to those of us that love the characters, the goofiness of it all, and the perfect fnaf balance of creepy and fun. Seeing it with an audience of other fans added to my enjoyment, all cheering at the same references and laughing at the same in-jokes. Also Matthew Lillard's scenery-chewing.

So as a fan of both the games and kind of the lore of the world as a general concept I will give the movie credit that it did a good job of dumbing down and explaining what these things are and how the ghost possession works in a way that it took the games four games to explain So I will say though that the movie does miss a mark on some pretty important stuff I 100% agree with Doug that it would have been nice to see the animatronics get to do their thing a little more but I also appreciate them spending a lot of time establishing the lore for potential sequels

I saw it last night on Peacock and i found it pretty decent, in a way, but when i keep thinking about it there is this let down to it. Especially I think it goes into the second act with the animatronics and the little sister I think that is going to be the deciding factor if people and fans are gonna like this movie or come out hating it. My biggest disappointment was the lack of Matthew Lillard whose role from the games is such a important one and is more creepier in the lores story, it felt such a waste just getting 3 to 4 minutes of him and just being brought up now at the finale battle. And his "Death" in the games was more satisfying and deserving than how they addapted it here with him acting this isnt the last you'll see of me.

As a fnaf fan, i had quite high expectations for the movie and after seeing the film in my local cinema, the film met my expectation for the most part (non spoilers)
Firstly, i want to talk about the postives:
    Music:
The music great throught the moments that perfectly capture the tone in the moments
    The actor and acting :
The actors was fantastic and each brought the character to life very well (pun intended)
    Cameos:
i like the movie had cameos from popular fnaf youtubers like fuzionzgamer, baz, 8-bitryan (who appear on the employee on the month board near the office) were a nice shout out to everone who help make this franchise the cultural phemonon that it is today
    plot:
The plot is very easy to understand and there a perfect balance of humour and tense or emotional scenes
The film doesnt focus too heavly on the lore other than what revealed in the trailers (eg fnaf 1 and the silver eyes book)
There are plenty of refrences and easter eggs in the movies for hardcore fans
    Animantronics and stunt team:
The amintronics look amazing and jim hensons team adapted the animantronic fantastically with amazing amount of detail like the child hand print on the side of freddy's right eye and the stitching on chica jaw and bonnie face negatives,
The stunt team and puppeter for the full size amanrronics did a amazing job capture the movement of the animantronics and giving each character there own personalities
Also, i recommended staying for the credits for reasons i wont spoil
Overall, i really enjoyed the movie and i left the cinema quite satisfied with the movie overall, i would give it a 7/10, it not perfect but it does have more postive then negatives

my main problem with the animatronics is that while i apreciate that they use costumes and puppets insted of CG they look waaaay to polish and clean to the point they look fake for the most part, which is bizarre since how can you do that with actual practical effects? In my opinion they should have give them more texture or even some dirt if they want us to convince us they are legit animatronics insted of cg characters. You know kinda like jim hemson did with the ninja turtles. Or at least don't over expose them with low angle lights (it remind me of that deleted scene from alien where they show him in his entirelly with shitty lightning and the costume didn't look as good as the rest of the film.. to be fair it still look better than whatever the hell they did in covenant)

I would say as a fan of the FNAF franchise the first half of the movie was solid, the second half however, is a bit choppy. My sister says it should have been longer because it did feel like a lot of the movie was cut from the final product. The actors were doing their best with what they were working with, but it felt like the writers realized they were not able to get everything they planned to do by the end, so they just throw it in. Still mostly good, just rough during the second half

The best way I described the movie to my co-worker is that it reminded me of 2014 Godzilla. When the CGI thing you paid to see was on screen, it was good, but instead, they focused on a human character that we ultimately don't care enough about and the human character that is interesting, has very little screentime.

  • @pherftheclown2631
    @pherftheclown2631 8 месяцев назад +2

That’s about how I felt about the movie too, in that we don’t really spend enough time “at Freddy’s.” Now, I’m more familiar with the source material, as was most of the audience I sat with, and so there’s a bunch of references throughout the movie that got people literally cheering. As for being a faithful adaptation, I’d say it sticks relatively close, but takes a few liberties. Practically nothing is known about Mike Schmidt in the games, and there is no sister or custody battle or anything like that. Some characters’ identities and relationships are swapped around a bit too, but it’d be too much of a spoiler to say anything more about that. I wouldn’t call it a great movie, but I liked it enough to hope for a sequel in the future.

In terms of the movie taking itself too seriously, i think that was one of the best aspects, Mike and his backstory is heartbreaking
Also i think the film from the start was supposed to be more than just a slasher film with animatronics, even the fans i think knew the film was going to be more than that

  • @conflictbrooks
    @conflictbrooks 9 месяцев назад +2

As a pretty big FNaF fan, I'm surprised by how much I have to agree with Doug, lol. The movie is held back by the fact that it takes itself just a little too seriously. It shouldn't have been a full-on slasherfest necessarily, and I did care about the plot (to answer your question, Doug, the story does get more plot-heavy and focus more on actual human characters in the later games and in the books [yes, there are books] although not quite as much as this film did). But I do remember thinking during some of the scenes focusing on the human characters, "these are minutes we could spend watching animatronics murder people."
All in all I liked the movie. I'm a real sucker for fanservice and details like popular FNaF RUclipsrs appearing in minor cameos or other references to iconic things in the games ("dream theory", "IT'S ME", "I always come back!" et cetera) I can't pretend didn't get me excited. But I do agree with Doug that we could've gotten a bit more horror in a movie adaptation of what is primarily a horror game.

Hey Doug went on peropening day. Showing was SOLD OUT. By the end of the movie EVERYONE stood and cheered n applauded!
It was good, love the lore build, and hyped for the next movie to see where it goes! Scott always keeping us on our toes
And to help: I feel they wanted to focus on the story more for the first movie. the why n how this is happening rather than focus on the gore (i mean it is also pg13) and scares like EVERY other horror film. Which was a nice change of pace. Plus it set up the world that we will likely expand on in other movies. Introducing the main characters, the story of why the fnaf crew is alive and well murderous, I noticed how Afton had paused at Mikes name and if you know the game lore.....you might piece together why. If you dont it is a mystery to be solved.

It has a secondary plot to the movie that I think it focuses on way too much rather than being a FNAF movie. Also, instead of trying to survive the night he's always just sleeping on the job. This movie could've had big suspense factor with the anticipation build-up of the animatronics slowly getting closer to the security office room while that main character is frantically checking cameras and trying to keep them at bay. But no, we get forts & dream visions. The movie had some good moments but I don't picture myself rewatching this.
