Willy's Wonderland is a 2021 American action comedy horror film directed by Kevin Lewis from a screenplay by G. O. Parsons. The film stars Nicolas Cage, who also served as producer, along with Emily Tosta, Ric Reitz, Chris Warner, Kai Kadlec, Christian Del Grosso, Caylee Cowan, Terayle Hill, Jonathan Mercedes, David Sheftell and Beth Grant. It follows a quiet drifter who is tricked into cleaning up an abandoned family entertainment center haunted by eight murderous animatronic characters.

The comic timing of him taking a break every time the alarm goes off despite whatever is going on is hilarious, and seeing nic cage have NO EMOTION is so meta hilarious I can’t avoid loving this movie. Plus his simple dedication to getting the job done despite everything that happens like it is just no big deal is comic genius.
He's literally playing a video game character! Gotta have that core game loop!

I love that he takes the "take breaks" advice so seriously that he will not infringe upon it. No matter what, he will have his break, and he will drink excessive amounts of Punch while doing so. And the animatronics KNOW not to disturb this mans breaks. He will have his time off, and then they will go back to trying to kill him.
Kinda feels like a a side quest you would see in a video game

There’s a popular theory that Cage is actually a kid who got away from one of Wily’s massacres and came back specifically to get his revenge. I can totally believe it.
I saw a theory that he's Gregory from FNAF Security Break grown up and now he roams the country hunting evil animatronics.

This is a theory? I thought this was literally spelled out in the movie. Man drinks sugary drinks (he did as a child), he plays the pinball machine (that's he's fondling like he's super familiar with) and he seems super hateful directly towards willy when he first seems him
Thats part of my hypothesis. My own includes him being lizs biological father, her mom and step father went missing and he left his home looking for them just because he needed to know they were ok. When he stoped by willies and saw liz without her mother he knew exactly what happened.
I always interpreted it as everyone was always TOO SCARED to just try fighting back.
But the Janitor, a special forces veteran (his dog tags are shown in his introduction), isn't scared.
He's seen shit way scarier than this. He's just annoyed. So he just squares up and wrecks their shit.
Just because it's a serial killer possessing an animatronic doesn't mean it's actually a capable fighter.
It's relying on you panicking in fear and horror instead of resisting and giving it an easy kill.
If you keep your head and just fight back, you could turn the tables pretty easily.
Movies like this are why the "ex-military=super tough guy" trope continues to persist.

The fact that a lot of ex-military people actually ARE super tough people... especially military people who are Special Forces, and who've seen COMBAT... is the reason this trope continues to persist.
Nothing like training a person to be a cool-headed killing machine to produce a badass. This movie is like a case of 'Reality Ensues' for FNAF.
These cowards have only ever killed panicking people who've never been afraid for their lives before and helpless children, neither with the skills to defend themselves effectively.
The Janitor is a man who's not only been afraid for his life before, but specially trained to keep a cool head in that situation and have the skills to kill an enemy any number of ways.
This is the realistic outcome of John Wayne Gacy vs Navy Seal.
I completely agree; look at Uvalde. The police were all too scared, and it took the border patrol to stop that psycho.

The best part about this movie is how far it goes into "show, don't tell" storytelling. The backstory is told in small chunks throughout the movie even with the flashbacks serving to explain the more stranger parts, but never overstays it's welcome.
Nic Cage's character however becomes believable as not only a badass, but a very competent janitor in a 'blink and you miss it moment' where a pair of dogtags are hanging off the rear view of his Camaro. With that one bit of info, suddenly Nic Cage's character is possibly some sort of Spec OPs pipe swinging badass and cleaning an entire restaurant in one night is probably easier than the time he had to clean the whole barracks in an afternoon back in Basic.
Cleaning blood and oil while your life is under threat is just second nature for your former SCP Veteran.
I remember seeing some fan theory that he's a genetically engineered soldier and the Punch is his super soldier serum, which is why it exists only in the movie

I love this movie. I almost got the impression that the main character is from an entirely different movie, and he knows this. Like all the teens act like they are supposed to in your standard horror film, but Cage acts like he is in a tough guy action movie. He really doesnt give a F about whats going on in the movie, hes just doing his own thing. Its kind of like when you have a dream, but realize that your dreaming, and your just fucking with the dream world.
Man this is a beyond accurate representation of the vibes he gives off in this movie. Has Insane powers and plot armor while also being completely silent as many are during that kind of dream cause you end up being aware that your essentially alone.
This movie might exists out of love for 80s 'musclebound hero' action and horror movies. Think about Rambo, Jackie Chan, Ash, and/or Arnold Schwarzenegger vs Michael Myers, Freddy, Jason, Leatherface and/or Deadites.
Lucid dreaming. Where you start controlling your dream.
My favorite theory is the main character is supposed to be from a video game. He is silent like in many video games, the Punch is either a power up or simply a way to restore health, and him continuing to clean is because its simply his quest and he's trying to get it done, with taking breaks being optional objectives to complete in order to get more XP, money or items

The fact Nic Cage doesn't say anything in this movie is what makes it so great, his facial expressions alone show EXACTLY what he's thinking/going to say.
The thing with cage's weird mannerisms actually works in this story.
The animatronics are empowered by a demonic pact, right? And Cage is stuck in a similar contract as an employee.
This way, Cage is given the power to fight these creatures, but only while abiding his employee contract. This includes the mandatory cleaning and ill-timed breaks.

@@darksev.6468 Maybe, but some people don't get meaningful breaks on their free time. Some people have cycles of wake up, eat, work, sleep and repeat. Only having 2 free days or less off and not having enough time to do what they want because they have another job or chores or important appointments that need to be kept which makes their free time seem meaningless. Is it important to take breaks from work? Absolutely, but some people don't get that need filled.

Kinda. Except the animatronics are out for revenge solely for the nightshift security guy. In this movie they were basically possessed by serial killers who killed just about anyone, adults and children.
I love how if they'd just let Nick do his thing, everyone human would've been fine.
The look of, "Aw shit, now I gotta clean this up too..." after every kill is great.

I honestly really love the scenes where he takes a break and just goes and plays pinball. That one scene where he just hands the girl the knife and walks off is...Nicolas Cage. In every possible way, and i love it.

One of my favorite jokes in the film was when Cage was fighting those two animatronics while handcuffed, the song that comes on when he turns on the music is Head Shoulders Knees and Toes. It's not just funny because it's a children's song played over a fight, but also because Cage has to fight them with only his head shoulders knees and toes.

Fun Fact: Originally, the director was going to have The Janitor say just one line towards the end of the movie, for dramatic effect, but Nick wanted to commit to the silent aspect of the character by keeping him completely mute

I showed this movie to my brother and he was upset that it wasn't just 90 minutes of Cage cleaning. That was his favorite part.
Also, apparently the script was written before FNAF was even a thing, and I have no problem believing that. Chances are it just kept getting rejected by studios and then when FNAF became big they were suddenly like "Hey, this is popular now, didn't we have some dork with a script somewhat like it?" From what I've gleaned, that's a rather common practice in the business. The ideas may predate trends, but the funding for them doesn't. We all know how scared studios are of taking risks and breaking new ground.
I don't have much else to add. I really enjoy this movie since it does indeed deliver what it promises and I adore Nicolas Cage, but I do also find that the stuff around it should have leaned more into satire, because as is it just plays it too straight and comes out so bland. So I essentially agree with the review with little to no exceptions.
I will add a fun fact though: That thing with the tongue is supposed to be a chameleon, and the only reason it's in the movie is that Nicolas Cage demanded they add a lizard to the cast for the simple reason that he likes reptiles.
Apparently the director never even heard of FNAF until after the trailer came out and everyone starting making the comparison and asking if the film was a parody of it.

I've been listening to my father rant about wanting a chucky cheese horror movie my entire life. I'm 32. I fully believe this could have been thought of before FNAF
Honestly for as goofy as this film is it kind of makes me enjoy it even more, sure its silly but honestly when a production gives us more of a sillier enjoyable Nicolas Cage film it honestly kind of makes it stand out even more. Now by no means i'm i calling Ghost Rider or the Wicker Man a good film but just watching Nicolas Cage be Nicolas freaking Cage is everything you want it to be and more in my opinion.
Ghost Rider is FUCKING AWESOME In my opinion it's ONE OF THE BEST Pre MCU films But Spirit of Vengenence FUCKING SUCKS
I think Hollywood is willing to let Cage do whatever he wants now, because of his reputation of having zero filter when it comes to insanity.

@@N-GinAndTonicTM Color Out of Space is one of the best "Cage being Cage" movies out there. Because his character actually goes insane through the course of the movie, and you can tell the scenes where the director says to him "Give me full Cage!". He was a perfect choice in that movie.

Throw It In: The famous bit of The Janitor busting out some sick moves while playing pinball near the climax was the result of Nicolas Cage improvising on-set.
I'd love to see a sequel that focuses on Nic Cage's character just being himself and fighting other evil things that happen to stumble into his path. Also, we better get a first reaction to this one. It's a film that's as entertaining watching people watch as it is watching it yourself.

Just have him wander through more setpieces from indie horror games. Have him go to Joey Drew Studios next and have him beat the shit out of some ink creatures.

The idea of some sort of kid-friendly place hiding some sort of malicious force is interesting, and as far as I know, there's only like 3 movies I can think of that utilizes this concept.

1. The Banana Split Gang movie
2. The Hug on Hulu
3. Willy Wonderland's

I've never seen this movie, but I LOVE the idea of someone in a horror movie actually fighting back.
That's a big part of what makes this movie so unique to me. Eight animatronics dead-set on killing him and he just is not having it.
This is very much a reverse horror movie, the slasher is the victim in this one. Its like if jeepers creepers had a similar begining but instead of a collage brother and sister the creeper instead ran off the road dante from devil may cry and beyanetta.
What if the Creeper ran John Wick off the road.
Honestly giving Nicolas Cage to all of our lives is probably the greatest thing that has happened to society in general period.

The script was written 10 years before even FNAF was created it was based on Go Parsons experience at Chuckie Cheese and how Creepy those Animatronics were. Also Nick Cage was in the project only because a friend of Parsons told him he had a friend who could play the part of The Janitor. Parsons was thinking of playing that part himself.
The Irony is that Nicholas Cage’s Character is ex military. Which is why he’s so good at fighting the Animatronics.
Not to mention that's also a very tired trope in Hollywood movies. An ex-military person is always a super cool fighter because reasons.

Here’s a review idea: Astro Boy. Nicolas Cage himself actually voices the father of the MC. If you saw the original anime you’d understand why they picked Cage, but sadly the character is a bit toned down to a reasonable character
it might be my own nostalgia talking here (grew up with the dub from the 80's) but the CG Astroboy movie is underrated.

In the dub version of the series he was all: “Robots will rule the world”! When I found out that Cage was voicing Tenma I thought: yeah I could see it. As much as Nicolas Cage has become a meme with his willingness to do any movie just for a paycheck, I think this is probably his best movie ever. As you said, the way he can not say a word despite his reputation of being over the top and yelling and yet... just be so badass and interesting... can you think of any actor that could have done this role better? No, no I am sure you cannot.
I don't know that any other actor could pull this off. This movie made my night.
An interesting theory I've heard is that Nick Cage's character may have deliberately gone to that town to destroy the animatronics. His character seemed way too composed and efficient to not have encountered something like this before.

That's the best part of this movie, we got no freakin' clue who this guy is! SO many people want to know who he is, where he came from and what his deal is and if we're lucky we will never get an actual answer! My personal theory is that he's the Devil come to claim their souls.

I want to see that. Put the janitor in other horror movies then watch as while the slasher is killing everyone else the killer is also trying to survive against nic cage.
Finally, the willy's wonderland review and this honestly, true to heart, my favorite Nicholas Cage Film and a good start up to the FNAF film. This is where Cage can be unleashed with his insanity on some robotic mascots. May not be my favorite 'scary' film, but its among my top 5.
I don't know if I'd label this a "scary" film (I'd' be more scared of Ghost Rider), but I would put it under the Nicholas Cage genre.

My favorite moments of this film would be all the moments when Cage killed all the animatronics in a gory, violent manor, however, the moments with the teens were not the best, but at least I got to see all them die in a gory way, so that kinda makes up for it. Overall, I think the best moments with Cage out way the slower moments with the teens, so I had a blast watching it.

Im pretty sure Willy doesnt taunt or talk in the final fight is because Cage killed all his friends. Hes pissed, this isnt a game anymore.

I love every element of this movie. It was so weirdly perfect... that not only did this movie come out, then Cage went on to do "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent", and still 5NAF finally found a new director yesterday.

I think I got it.
Cage's character is what's known as a "Custodian": Men and women who drift across the country dealing with supernatural threats. They're usually made up of people from the armed forces, trades, or victims of the supernatural themselves. Their work is literally thankless. They aren't expected to be praised or even noticed for what they do. They just do it because it's their job, hence the title "Custodian."
The Janitor has been doing this job long enough that he's grown absolutely numb to most supernatural threats. His army training no doubt helps him keep his cool, but I think he's just used to encountering enough supernatural things that It really doesn't matter to him anymore. To him, the Willy's Wonderland gang are just another pack of nuts he has to deal with.
Ah the man, the myth, the legend that is Nicholas Cage. Can't wait to see this review critic, I've been watching channel awesome circa 2011. (Also Cage is delightfully in Color Out of Space 👽👾)
The "Dollar Store James Rolfe" joke hits a lot better when you recall that James Rolfe did a cameo in the Plan 9 From Outer Space remake as a policeman (named "Cop Policeman" for good measure XD)
The creative backstory is literally just the lore of FNAF with some minor differences I can't believe this wasn't at least in part inspired by those games
The script was written before the first fnaf game came out so either its a coincidence or Fnaf coppied part of this script
Nicolas Cage not saying a single word was the best decision this movie could make. Even with no dialogue, The Janitor is still one of the most fascinating and likable horror movie protagonists to me.

This is honestly one of my favourite films. Its a B list slasher film that has a charming premise of guy who works at a haunted animatronic restaurant actually fights back. What always pissed me off about fnaf and all that it inspired is that no guard ever thinks to fight back with an actual weapon.
Sure you break company property but it would at the very least cause them to back off.

I love this movie. It made my favorite film list of 2021.
I saw a RUclips comment theorize once that Cage's character was like an emissary of Hell to retrieve the souls of the serial killers from their little escape as animatronics, and that's why he's able to kill them so easily…The comment worded it better than I ever could, but sufficed to say I liked the theory.

I need a film series of this character just wondering the country and running into horror monster clichés. His car breaks down and the woods and a tow truck can't get there to the morning so he had to fight off a Jason Voorhees expy. Or he's in rural Texas and had to fight off a Leathface experience and his family

Fun Fact: Cage wasn't hired to appear in this movie. He was just walking by the set of a teen slasher movie and started cleaning the set. The director liked it, added some fight scenes and Cage walked off into the sunset after wrap

I was right! I called Doug doing this Nicolas Cage movie, and I'm glad I was right! I love Willy's Wonderland. The ONLY problem I have is the same thing Doug pointed out: how the hell were these Animatronics even threats? Like, ONE man literally took them all down. Are you seriously telling me that an ENTIRE TOWN OF PEOPLE couldn't just maul them to death? Just storm the damn restaurant with 50 people, with axes and chainsaws or whatever, and destroy them. PROBLEM SOLVED! That's something even I took issue with when I watched it for the first time. But...eh, fear makes people do stupid things, so who knows? Either way, I loved it.

Troubled Production: The film was shot on a shoestring budget in a very short period of time (one month) to accomodate Nicolas Cage's busy schedule right before the pandemic hit, and post-production was troubled by the director Kevin Lewis being diagnosed with COVID-19 (he recovered).
It also had to change its plot and title late into the game. Originally it was gonna be called Wally’s Wonderland and be set inside an abandoned theme park (you can even see that in the first poster for the movie which features that title and a theme park shadowed by a purple fog) but it has to be scaled down due to budget reasons and the title had to be changed due to a Simpsons joke that featured a Chuck E Cheese style restaurant with a mascot named Wally The Weasel
Nick Cage just unflinchingly killing everything that comes at him is what every horror protagonist should aspire to be

Oh yes! I watched this film twice and it's pretty awesome and funny and Nick Cage goes into beast mode in almost every scene.
"This movie gets an A for creative backstories!" No, that's literally Five Nights At Freddy's backstory, almost to a T. A serial child killer kills a bunch of kids by luring them in the back room of the restaurant, their souls are put into the animatronics and they turn violent when they see humans at night - literally FNAF.
But the serial killers are all the robots here…ok British Willam Afton is only one of them and majority of the robot want revenge on him and by proxy any night guard…

I'm surprised he didn't mention the subtle, and surprising, star trek reference in the film. When the girl is explaining the backstory she says they escaped capture by transferring their "Katras" into the animatronics. In star trek 3 they explain how they could bring back Spock was because he transferred his "Katra" into Dr McCoy just before his death at the end of Star Trek 2. Katra basically being the Vulcan word for soul, or "eternal living spirit".
YES! this is honestly in my top 20 favorite movies of all time. the janitor is one of the most badass characters ever conceived on screen and him being played by the cage man himself increases that tenfold.
The janitor also has the additional superpower of having the shiniest sunglasses known to mankind and I must say that the cinematography in this movie is really damn good
Honestly Nicolas Cage beating up animatronics is i think all anybody has ever needed in their lives.
Funny thing about this movie is that if you're the type who reads too deeply into things, you could see Nicholas Cage's character as a kid who survived an encounter with one of these animatronics and grew up. Traumatized by his experience with this weasel and with a host of developmental issues, he sticks around to find closure in comically badass ultraviolence.

I took the townsfolk's refusal to kill as though they had tried to at one point but failed. In the early stages, the animatronics probably knew the restaurant a lot better than the humans and knew where to hide, thus being able to survive any restaurant burnings or at least knowing where the fire hydrants are to put out the flames. I also think since it's been decades the animatronics were a lot harder to kill originally than when the janitor fights them. Back when their killing spree was new, they were probably well-built metal behemoths that could easily outmaneuver someone, but now decades later since they kill any janitors and the townsfolk don't maintain them, their bodies are dilapidated and worn down.
I expected Nicholas Cage fighting furries and I got Nicholas Cage fighting furries with an added bonus of it being played out by free bird
