This is literally the story of my family’s language abilities. 😂 My grandma is Swedish and they chose to keep Swedish a secret language so they could talk about stuff that was inappropriate for children in front of us. Then my dad acted all insulted when I couldn’t speak it.
@@avatara82 Part of the problem is there’s nobody to practice it with. We used to live in Chicago where there are Swedish neighborhoods, however, once we moved, nobody knew it because of the lack of ethnic Swedes in our area. My Farmor is now in an assisted living place and she probably has Alzheimer’s. They don’t label it as that, but that’s kind of what it’s like. I am grateful she knows Swedish, English, and American Sign Language. They say being bilingual helps and she’s trilingual. There was also a Swedish couple living at this place and I said “Farmor you have to go hang out with them! They’re from Värmland too!” That’s honestly so big to find someone from the same province as you today in the US. That still blows my mind. I hope they are speaking lots of Swedish to each other. As far as Swedish goes though, I think it’s something that’s sadly been lost to my family, but we do still carry some ethnic and cultural Swedish traditions. Like we might have juletomtens, peppakakor, bullas, etc. But little of the language.

@@marthae080 I don't know this person, but here are some possibilities. I am just putting them out there to say, until you know all the facts, don't turn something into a laughing matter. If you have two parents, but one is only your bio parent, than you won't biologically be related to both of them. Maybe, this is a second marriage for one of your parents, and you were already born, from a previous marriage. Maybe you could have been adopted as a child, one adoptive parent, you happen to coincidentally share the same language and tribe , the other parent you don't. In the end, all that matters is you have a loving family .
Dont worry any of you! Both my Mom and Dad are my biological parents, Im not really half Yoruba, I just said i was half Yoruba because my parents can speak the language, my parents are both fully Ibibio and can speak Yoruba and a bit of Igbo. I hope that cleared things up!

😂😂😂 both of your parents are Ibibio so where did the "half yoruba" emanate from??! 😂😂 Ékú isé o!
@@marthae080 I don't know this person, but here are some possibilities. I am just putting them out there to say, until you know all the facts, don't turn something into a laughing matter. If you have two parents, but one is only your bio parent, than you won't biologically be related to both of them. Maybe, this is a second marriage for one of your parents, and you were already born, from a previous
marriage. Maybe you could have been adopted as a child, one adoptive parent, you happen to coincidentally share the same language and tribe , the other parent you don't. In the end, all that matters is you have a loving family .
@@frugalityishername827 oh... you've got a point there. My apologies for turning it into a laughing matter.🙏 Correction well taken!!
My parents r igbo
Dont worry any of you! Both my Mom and Dad are my biological parents, Im not really half Yoruba, I just said i was half Yoruba because my parents can speak the language, my parents are both fully Ibibio and can speak Yoruba and a bit of Igbo. I hope that cleared things up!
