I had gone into Puss 'n Boots with no expectiations or whatsoever, and honestly have been blown away by the attention to detail in the animations themselves, the changing styles of drawing, the music, the theme, and the characters all have played a magnificent role in shaping out the story that, while is about anthropomorphic animals, mimics the experience of humans far too well. That said, The Wolf has got to be what has stolen the show for me! His ominous presence, and foreboding existence make you question the very fabric of misery in life, whether or not you have firsthand experienced it. It is easily my favourite film in 2022 alongside The Menu.
I didn't pay attention to the soundtrack while watching the film, but the thumping, conspicuous rhythm of the music really fits Death's "slow but steady" thing. He takes his time to get to wherever he needs to be while following the main character, knowing that Puss can't defeat him however much he can try. Death is a truly scary villain who knows EXACTLY what he's doing, and how to do so.
Throughout the entire movie I was even freaked out by Death appearing in front of Puss in Boots. Like it is legitimately a terrifying concept of having Death hunt you down for sport; appearing at random while whistling an eerie, airy, incomplete lullaby and toying with you. Another thing is that the animation style changing to a more stop motion esc feel during the fight scenes is genius. The scenes are more intense, all the actions seem more deliberate and it makes a character getting hit a much bigger deal.
Why does the whistle sound so familiar somehow? OKAY! I just realized that his whistle sounds a lot like "Wheels on the bus". I don't know if that was the intention, but something about how familiar it is makes it even creepier...

When Puss first meets Wolf, I’m reminded of OG death from Supernatural. They both nonchalantly brush off the MC’s bravado like it’s nothing as they eat something. And funny enough they have the same type of weapon; aka a hand sickle.
Something not talked about enough is that the whistle melody never finishes, like he was playing with Puss. The only time it completes is in the final fight, where he decided he end the chase. Death's melody ended when he decided to kill him man that's so fire

I like to think the three little pigs would instead be metaphors for different responses to death The first pig tries to run, fearing his life, and is too worried about stalling death to live his life at all. The second pig is cocky, and begins taking risks, eventually being caught off guard by death. The third pig is calm about deaths approach,he already knows his life will eventually be cut short,so he appreciates what time he has left.

I dunno, the wolf villain feels very overused by this point
@ - Personally, I thought it was a unique twist on a rather mundane villain idea. It's just familiar enough to be recognizable but with enough difference to remain memorable, resulting in a cool villain.
Not sure if it was done on purpose, but the three big thumps thought this whole thing sound (to me) somewhat like a heart beat, which, intentional or not, I think is a really cool detail!!
"I was there to witness *_All of them._* Each. *_Frivolous._* End. But you... Didn't even notice me. Because 'Puss In Boots _laughs_ in the face of Death,' _right?_ *_But you aren't laughing now."_*
Love how his first theme feels like a westerner shootout music, but has a creepy underline theme going along the way that makes itself apparent as music goes on.
What seemed the creepiest to me was how Death has been watching Puss in Boots from the very start. He's watched Puss lose all 8 of his lives, and it's as if he's always there.
Usually a person's heartbeat attempts to match the song in tempo, even if not exactly, so all things considered the composer just made use of that little fact
I think it's funny how the big bad wolf and the 3 bears are already in-universe characters in shrek, but these are different characters from them. In headcanon, I consider the wolf we know from the original movie to be the Big Bad Wolf of the 3 little pigs story. Maybe this is the big bad wolf of little red's story, or something else all together (avoiding potentially spoilers). Again in the original, Goldilocks' 3 bears are seen in cages where Donkey is being held. Later in the movie, Papa Bear is seen in Shrek's Swamp comforting Baby Bear. Due to the absence of Mama bear and the presence of her pelt in Lord Farquad's Decorum, we can assume that this iteration of her is deceased. I'm glad they make use of their characters, even if at the moment it seems like a bit of a retcon or something for the 3 bears.
I don't think this 'big bad wolf' is meant to be of any story. The whole reveal of this guy is that he's death itself, after all. Not in any 'fancy' way, like he says. Literal, straight-up death. I think the point was you to go 'wait, but isn't there already a big bad wolf in this world'? as a clue that this wolf wasn't what he seemed. I think this wolf is only 'big bad' sort in his narrative role + the archetype he occupies. Still, 'the big bad wolf is death itself' is probably one of my personal favorite character concepts of all time!
I like how they made death a wolf. I personally think it's because wolves in the original fairy tales often were death omens, tricksters, or were straight up eating people.
It's been such a while i didn't saw a villain of that level of badassitude and creepiness tbh, last time i had these vibes by Dreamworks, was since first time i saw Sheen and Tai Lung villains from Kung fu Panda
jesus the whistling makes me seize up in fear watching this movie in theaters was amazing, and i'm glad you made a suite for the music in the movie! i'll see if i can listen to the others
I've heard no one mention it. The first time the whistle is actually ever heard is right before the bell crushes Puss. When you hear the crowd cheer for an encore, he whistles the first two notes.
The curious thing about this new character is that it gives a reference to Death, Santa Muerte oh Angeles de la Muerte (how it is known in your country). In Mexico and Spain, the holy death is known that whoever meets her while she is alive usually whistles a melody that is a warning that you will soon be about to die, a whistle heard in your last minutes of life. There are Latin legends where it is said that the Holy Death usually appears in front of people who are not afraid of dying or who do not value their own life, or who do not respect the dead, or death itself.
Wow, I never thought that Death would be such a good villain! The theme and the whistle is so well done! Wagner Moura did such a great job with the voice acting!

Finally a anthropomorphic wolf character that actually looks cool and not just some cheap ass furry bait
Still is lol
_Motherfucker looks like he came from Zootopia,_ *but feels like he belongs in fucking Bloodborne!* 💀
Straight up _good_ furry bait. GOOD wolf representation to boot. Needed this for so long
the furries will definitely have some fun with this character
Just because it’s a wolf doesn’t make it furry bait 😭
He’s likely a wolf because he’s supposed to scare Puss, who is a cat
When I was watching the movie I wasn't even paying attention to the music because it blends into the scenes so perfectly, hearing it on it's own is just incredible! It's so intimidating and leaves you with a lingering sense of dread even afterwards.
This version of Death definitely jumped to near the top of my favorite Antagonists/Villains list faster than Puss could say "Fear me, if you dare."
Agreed I love that mature scene too that Puss finally learn his lesson and he can defeat Death then he say "pick it up" that he never stop fighting Death who comes after him all the time
3:06 literally sounds so good
Goosebumps every time he whistles
bro same it goes hard
Agreed.
The big bad wolf is just so fucking awesome his voice, his look, his personality is just so badass "he's here for me" is the best theme for when he's on screen in my opinion
Not the big bad wolf its Death but okay
@@wert556 It is, he just calls himself that boss

@@wert556 I can think of no other fairy tale character that would be a wolf plus the big bad wolf is the villain to a lot of fairy tales so it makes sense that he'd be such a symbol of fear across this universe
I like how they took the concept of the Wolf, the most common, mundane, uninteresting fairy tale villain ever, and made him extremely fascinating, powerful, and terrifying. They played into his aesthetic perfectly, characterizing him as real predator (get it?) yet retaining his legendary presence. Being a wolf also has parallels to Anubis, the ancient Egyptian god of funeral ordinances, who had the head of a jackal/wolf. In Egyptian mythology, Anubis would also judge the worthiness of a soul entering the afterlife, similar to how Death in this movie condemns Puss for squandering his previous eight lives. Of course, it also plays into the usual cat vs. dog trope in most cartoons, except this time, it's much more terrifying. Not only is it brilliant, but it also coverts a familiar character into a new threat, making us even more afraid of the Big Bad Wolf compared to his typical fairy tale incarnation.
Speaking of fairy tales, making the connection between the Wolf and Death paints those original stories in a much different light as well. HOW did they manage to make this character so conceptually interesting?

If memory serves, those are the first notes of a funeral match!
i heard that there is a legend where if you are about to die you hear some weird song like if someone was whistling then you meet death itself death also is seen behind people that don't care about their lives
A brazilian composing a music for a character dubbed by a brazilian. Puss in Boots came to Brazil
Yey!
Not only that, but he enjoys it and savors every moment of Puss's dread.
A wolf whistle for a puss in boots. Would it be catcalling?
You have ruined this theme for me, thanks.
A+ 👍👍🤣

There’s science in this theme: for every 1-2 deaths there’s a near miss

The fight with Death actually sounds like you are fighting a boss in some video game.
Ironically, it is safe for me to say that wolf gave Puss in Boots a "life" Lesson lmfao
As perfectly fitting for a depiction of death who WANTS you to know he is coming to end you itself, that whistle is SUCH an invasion of personal space
Why does the whistle sound so familiar somehow?
OKAY! I just realized that his whistle sounds a lot like "Wheels on the bus". I don't know if that was the intention, but something about how familiar it is makes it even creepier...

Death is one of those characters who progresses from intimidating to terrifying the more you think about him.
And when you learn who he is, you get even more terrified than when you were kept at the 'mystery' side at the beginning.
This made my day so much better TYSM for posting this suite!
Very scary he's worse than Death from Adventure Time and Regular sbow
There more for comedy effect but here he's actually represented as fear of death which makes him scary as hell
This death is the one we fear, Adventure time death is the one we’re to be at peace with.
Best Animated film villain since Scar IMO.
Its about dam time right?
Not a villain though, he is more like a force of Nature
Shen?
This is a chic detail, at the moment 4:28 (when the puss defends himself with the help of the gatito blade), the theme of the kitty soft pow, who gave him this blade, suddenly bursts in. (Clarification, a similar motif was already heard in the film when kitty first appeared)
What's the matter? Lifes flashing before your eyes...?

When Puss first meets Wolf, I’m reminded of OG death from Supernatural. They both nonchalantly brush off the MC’s bravado like it’s nothing as they eat something. And funny enough they have the same type of weapon; aka a hand sickle.
"Think how you would feel if a bacterium sat at your table, and started to get snarky"
This guy genuinely gave me chills every time he was on screen! Perfect execution! Great voice acting and great buildup! Love this guy!
Something not talked about enough is that the whistle melody never finishes, like he was playing with Puss. The only time it completes is in the final fight, where he decided he end the chase. Death's melody ended when he decided to kill him man that's so fire
Ah a purrrfect lawful evil character, haven't seen any since rattlesnake Jake. Definitely add to my favorite list.
He is not evil, though. He is more of a natural thing. A force of nature, Death.
@@cyphlone3306Well he certainly doesn’t do his job in a fun nice way for people haha
is it wrong i found the whistle calming?
Nah , its calming too
It is. Its as if death is approaching for a swift end
It's probably a tactic he uses to calm people who are close to their time running out for the mortal world.
I think the contrast of the whistle with his real purpose adds to the fear.
I think that's the point, it either calms you down or sets your adrenaline to max...
So you don't realize your throat has been slit.

I like to think the three little pigs would instead be metaphors for different responses to death
The first pig tries to run, fearing his life, and is too worried about stalling death to live his life at all.
3:06 It's the fact that the whistle is higher pitched that usual, like death is HAPPY that he's has finally found you
"The Smell or Fear" sounds absolutely so Terrifying. The Chills I got everytime when Death whistle.
Not sure if it was done on purpose, but the three big thumps thought this whole thing sound (to me) somewhat like a heart beat, which, intentional or not, I think is a really cool detail!!

2:22 Love hearing the melody on low brass like this. Really just accentuates it.

I have got to say Death in this movies is one of my favourite characters and his theme is one of my top 10.
Interesting thing I noticed, the beats at 3:17 actually match your heartbeat
Maybe the baby bear from Shrek grew up and now is this papa bear. "Use your imagination!"
The 3 bears we see in TLW can't be the only talking bears in the world
The wolf in the Shrek movies was the Big Bad Wolf of Little Red Riding Hood. You can tell because he's wearing the Grandma disguise.
I think this Goldilocks didn't run away from the bears
I don't think this 'big bad wolf' is meant to be of any story. The whole reveal of this guy is that he's death itself, after all. Not in any 'fancy' way, like he says. Literal, straight-up death. I think the point was you to go 'wait, but isn't there already a big bad wolf in this world'? as a clue that this wolf wasn't what he seemed. I think this wolf is only 'big bad' sort in his narrative role + the archetype he occupies. Still, 'the big bad wolf is death itself' is probably one of my personal favorite character concepts of all time!
If you guys didn’t realise yet, He’s whistling the soundtrack of “3 little kittens who lost their mittens and they began to cry”

watching this movie in theaters was amazing, and i'm glad you made a suite for the music in the movie! i'll see if i can listen to the others
This is just as good as the whistle song in Kill Bill. They both got that same foreboding atmosphere
This film is masterful, both artistically, story, and music, I have no words to describe this gem.

The only words of the death to this sound is " it's Time... '' with a Big smile
