Random encounters do hold up, there's nothing wrong with them People LOVE Undertale a game with random encounters and still call it a masterpiece to this day
@CDsNoots I think it does detract from a game -- I can deal with an old game being old, but if a modern JRPG released with random encounters then it would takeaway from the experience
Dragon Quest III is an exceptionally good "imagination game" on account of its world map being an approximation of our own. As you travel through the world of DQ3 you can imagine yourself setting out in our own age of exploration, except with magic and monsters.
@@TrevRockOneit is. I had the same experience with FF1 last year. I remember the town where you get your ship, it was 'overrun' by pirates but there were like 5 pirates in the town lole
@@julester715 thank you so much. I started WoW around Wrath of the Litch King and got hooked. When wow classic started I went back to play it and having no quest markers was quite annoying 😅
Dragon Quest 5 is the peak of the series. 8 is good too, but that was when the series began to try to follow Final Fantasy's footsteps in terms of storytelling. 5 is still pure Dragon Quest while having a great story.
@AdziGaming I don't think it's necessary to compare the past with the present, in order to fully enjoy it you have to live in a time machine and think about these things AT the time of release, I think today's rpg is a whole different genre of the classic ones, we just failed at realizing the transition thinking it's still one
@UnlockedANDunleashed I agree. With needing to live in a time machine when playing retro games. Look at TES Daggerfall. No one who played Skyrim/Oblivion will see any value in Daggerfall, but the options available in the game, the scale and scope, the vision. The RP potential. I consider Daggerfall to be one of the best RPGs ever, but most people would disagree. They'd see the dated graphics, the obscure mechanics, and give up on it. Edit; when I said anyone whose played Skyrim/Oblivion won't see any value in Daggerfall, I meant that as people who have ONLY played Oblivion/Skyrim.
@SuperSwineGod2MaximumOverSwine I totally agree with you but because I didn't like Skyrim, it was way harder to go back to oblivion even with mods, felt like I shouldn't have tried Skyrim at all

i dont thin anyone loves undertale because of the random encounters.. its more like they love undertale DESPITE the random encounters right?
@kephalai if that was the case you would've heard people complain about it, nobody has ever do that
@@CDsNoots I agree with @kephalai below. I don't think random encounters improve any game
@@AdziGaming neither does the opposite, it doesn't need to improve anything its as valid as any other design choice

amazing take as always, man! videogames have a very deep history and it's a good idea to keep that in mind, especially with classics like dragon quest
I never played dragon quest but was very much into the classic final fantasy’s growing up. Will definitely need to check this game out at some point!
Must it's amazing
@@Kenny2125 you'd love this then. Thanks for watching Kenny
DQ3 is contemporary with FF1 -- DQ3 came out a month and change later. If you like FF1, DQ3 is a similar game but way better.
this video was so good!!! im playing the new classic wow servers and im in a pretty similar boat lol

Videogames are very rich in history
You say that it's perhaps the best classic JRPG and then proceed to talk about all the aspects that are bad :(
Skill issue tbh
