I think I need to get a flac or other high quality version. I have been streaming it via Spotify for the first few listens and while it doesn't sound bad, and I like the songs, the production has been muddy to my ears.
@@DuskPatrol I agree. It did sound a bit bass-heavy and I think it might be down to how they mixed the kick and the bass. Also seems like the guitars are also dialled in a bit smoother, while cymbals have received a lot of "air". It's not my favourite mix of theirs but it's definitely better than Once More 'Round the Sun.
It has horrible production. Drums drowning the guitar and clipping/distortion everywhere. Also, has this "fuzzy" sound that destroys instrument separation
yeah the replies are on crack no one listening to this album with two ears and a halfway decent speaker/headphone could say it's not immaculately produced
Been diagnosed with depression (well, more like, finally agreed to talk to a psychiatrist), after an eon long battle. One of the only ones that can bring a smile on my face is you guys in another one of your videos/another smashing album. Thanks for that 🤘
Bro.. I had the same problem like You. I got out of it. You know where is the trick to get well? You only have to change how You think, NOTHING more. :) You actually are in control of it all, take charge man, just say that You are done with feeling that way. It is that simple trust me. I was letting it control me for 15 yrs, and then i said enough, my turn now. And i won right away. Just change the way you think, see and process things. :)
Hey, glad you took the step to talk to someone qualified! if you found the right person, things should be looking up as you work through stuff. Getting out of a depression is definitely not easy but it's possible. I used to be in a very, very bad place, but if I made it, you can too. Stay strong and allow yourself to be happy, don't trust the stuff in your head trying to keep you down. You'll make it out. Cheers
Keep your head up brother. At my worst, I felt like it is would be less painful dead, but I was wrong, I woke up 5 days later from the coma I put myself in (trying to kill myself). Since then, I knew that there was some reason why I was denied the peace of death, and it has been what gives me the strength to wake up each morning and look myself in the eye and say "gotta go get it done" - whatever it is,,, and then do my best for that day. Then repeat. And even though it might not be awesome EVERY DAY, I'm living testimony that if I keep my head up, to it WILL GET BETTER.

the tone of this album is the major advancement of them in my opinion. think about it. from Remission to Hushed and Grim theyve successfully widened, deepened, fattened their music with their unbelievable musical talents. they never cease to evolve.
This album has become a must listen for me. Every single day before and after work. It speaks volumes. Its just everything I needed this year. Cheers Mastodon. 🤍
Not rely on it but he does have a double pedal. A lot of drummers with two bass drums only have them for looks and are actually using a double pedal. Jordison was one.
For anyone wondering, Brann's custom painted kit is a Tama Starclassic Performer Birch/Bubinga. But looks like the 13" rack tom is from another kit - not sure what that one is. No idea what snare he's using in this clip either.
I've been listening Hushed and Grim on repeat since it released. I've been trying to put it down and listen to some other music, just to keep my head and ears fresh (I write music myself so I don't want to end up a Mastodon copycat lol) but I just can't, it's sooooooo(...)oooo good. Everything, just everything on this album is top tier. A true "all killer no filler". With previous releases, there are always songs that I tend to skip if the mood's not right. But here? Every tune has this nugget of amazing in it, whether it's the chorus, the solo, the breakdown riff, the drumming, the vocals, or just a wicked trippy synth part. Keeps me coming back for more again and again. Thanks for all of that Mastodon, love you guys
They should release a full seven hours film of them talking about their music, with bits of music here and there. Maybe even nine hours, let's go crazy. "Mastodon, by the four Mastodons". I would watch that in repeat.
I thought the production on this album was particularly dope, every instrument sounded clear and inspired. The "hairy" bass that Troy described is, in my opinion, THE Mastodon sound.
I'm not surprised, but I love the fact that Bill owns a Thunderhorse Explorer. Even more so, cause when he was designing his signature Explorer, it was going to be Silverburst til he found out about the Thunderhorse's existence haha.
It f**kin' worked, fellas! ALL of it! This is the most musical & transporting selection of tunes I may have ever heard in 42-years as a connoisseur of music.
Mastodon doesn’t have fuck you money, they have fuck you time. I do t care if they take a decade to release something because I know they’re in the studio doing this shit and writing mammoth riffs
album of the year gents, thank you so very much. I played "Roots Remain" and read lyrics from it at my mothers funeral in January, I know what that song means to you all and especially Bill. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, this album has been on repeat since it was released. \m/
@@isajmody2344 I’m from the younger crowd of the headbangers ball era I’m just trying to see Mastodon live before they kick the bucket or ever God forbid disband.

Troy describing his tone as "a gnarly, giant, hairy, dirty, thick sound" is the most accurate thing I've ever heard
Fancy meeting you here!! Mastodon are my favorite band, and you’re one of my favorite bassists!! Cover maybe???
Yeah I agree Patrick. Haha. I thought he could have just said it sounds like a mastodon haha. A big hairy giant gnarly dirty thick beast.
Whats up pat 😎
Ain't that the tooth
I like my bass tones the opposite way I like my women
We need more break downs of the gear everyone used. The tones on this album are fantastic !
YES PLEASE.
Sparrowhawk > Butterslax
Troy's tone has finally convinced me to learn bass🔥
You won't regret it 🤘

The tone and production on this album is top tier. So good

That bass is killer
Troy is easily the most underrated bass player in metal. Probably because he’s a fucking gnarly singer.
lol ok....
He’s my favourite bass player no doubt! I’ll take him in my band any day 😉
I love how incredibly expressive Troy is.
I could watch these album documentaries for hours, they're so riveting!
I love the sludginess of Gobbler of Dregs

Hushed and Grim is a magnanimous album.
The heaviest drummer that doesn't rely on double bass

@@DavidOakesMusic bet you’re only thinking of mainstream metal bands from the 80’s and 90’s, am I right?
Abe Cunningham doesn’t use a double bass and he’s heavy as hell.
I could watch footage like this all day...

He mounts his rack toms upside down too. But the batter head is still on "top" as it were...
Can we get more of these little insights? Or like 3 hours of the making of Hushed and Grim.

Loving the album so far, and I’m betting the songs I’m not a fan off will grow on me like most Mastodon songs do.
Same here. One of the most (initially) boring songs is now one of my favorites…that’s how it goes sometimes
Love these vids but they are too short for how infrequent they are. I hope there is a LONG one on the way of the entire document.
They said their working on a full “making of”’ documentary, so I’m assuming it’ll include all of these clips and maybe more
They had those included on Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye. I enjoyed those.
@@sunnibird I’m pretty sure they’ve had a documentary for almost every album.
@@Weestinn I really hope so. These shorties aren't enough.
So cool to see the process of finding “their” specific tones. Great album from a long time fan, nod and horns to the engineers!

Love the gnarly sound and the new album is awesome and rewards multiple listens
Getting the tone is key
This album is so good!!
I've never heard troys bass isolate like that before. Had no idea his tone was so massive.
I both love and loathe that Brann has that goddamn Poltergeist Clown doll.

ALL of it!

Love that old video of him talking about his bass style when he pops in and out of bushes I still laugh at that everytime.
Mastodon doesn’t have fuck you money, they have fuck you time. I do t care if they take a decade to release something because I know they’re in the studio doing this shit and writing mammoth riffs
Bran doesnt age. Dude is a vampire
Absolutely amazing album.Thank You Mastodon something to end 2021 on a good note
I just love when Troy speaks and plays his bass. One day I'll gonna have my Warwick too. 🤟🏾

You know, if this whole music thing doesn't pan out, Troy could probably make a decent living in audiobooks.
Woah, giving me a tone bone over here

a gnarly, giant, hairy, dirty, thick sound : Mastodon is an animal which is gnarly, giant, hairy, dirty , thick and fkn dangerous.

The good old Ampeg SVT in the background. You just can't get around it, haha!
You only make your first record once.
2:43 Am I seeing Friedman JJ jr ?
Jerry nails the tone of that amp. Even Bill, who has his own signature Friedman amp, likes that amp.
Ah the old Silvertone 1484 warms my heart :-)
Always superb 🙌
If anyone knows: what is that cab splitter Bill is using? For what I can barely see its a Palmer, but dont know the model...
