By 1912, White Star had been using Queenstown as a terminal to collect Irish passengers for just over 40 years. They, along with fellow IMM subsidiary the American Line as well as chief rival Cunard Line, terminated at this port weekly connecting Liverpool and Southampton with New York, Boston and Philadelphia. With the way White Star typically operated, passengers from Ulster as well as other northeastern counties like Louth, Monaghan and Cavan were directed by train to Dublin or Belfast, where feeder lines transported them to Liverpool where they could board. For passengers from central, southern and western Ireland, ticket fares included railway passage to Queenstown and lodging in one of scores of hotels and boarding houses throughout the city.
