Drink like Robert F. Kennedy

- Today’s video features one of the most satisfying drinks I've had this year the Cocoanut Grove Cooler created by award winning bartender Tom Stenger at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. It was created as thew winning entry into the 1962 National Barmasters Drink Contest and what is so great about this drink is that it has all the flair of tiki and none of the Rum. Love drinks like this which switch out the obvious and play on expectation. Or really maybe reconstruct your sense of what is what. Admittedly, I opted for the Paul Magee Los Lake reconstruction of this drink over the original but if you've been watching us for a while you know that we tend to go with what we feel is best over what's original. Hope ya'll enjoy this one!

1.5oz (45ml) Blended Scotch
.5oz (15ml) Dry Curacao
.5oz (15ml) Batavia-Arrack
.75oz (20ml) Lemon Juice
.75oz (20ml) Pineapple Juice
.5oz (15ml) Passionfruit Syrup
.25oz (7.5ml) Orgeat
.25oz (7.5ml) Grenadine
Lemon Wheel Mint Sprig Garnish Хобби
Hey guys so .25oz (7.5ml) Grenadine is missing from the recipe screen at 5:14 sorry for the oversight! Sometimes this happens when we have so many ingredients in a drink. Cheers!
DAMMIT!!! I already made the drink!!! Oh well, I'm going back in!!!
The most frustrating part of tropical drinks is that you have to have 47 syrups, 15 obscure liquers (before we ever get to the base spirit) just to make 1 cocktail.
Ok, excellent shake smile there! Bring it, Steve 😃
You rock, Leandro.
Tropical Itch would be another great cocktail to cover!
Take it easy with the double posts there bud!
Ha! In college I did a reporting trip on that new school that replaced the Ambassador. Everyone was sad the bar at the Ambassador was gone.
Oh man, that looks delicious!
That was worth the drive for the Batavia-Arrack. Loving it.
Going to make this this weekend. You should make a "lost in space" next....
Video idea: you could talk about how different glasses make each and every cocktail taste different!
We do have a video about glassware, on our second channel ruclips.net/video/D0pW3oIItmk/видео.html
Just a weird note, the Coconut Grove is also the name for the ballroom at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk which is still operating and was dedicated in 1907.
Monkey Shoulder! That's a great blended scotch
I was just revisiting it the other day. It really is special! :)
Wow
What would you sub for the Arak?! A rum/cachaca, but what kind?! Would you prefer, say a jamaican or matenique rum?! Aged or unaged...
Thnaks in advance
Deep Thoughts with Leandro You next Channel!!! I like that glass and the cocktail looks really good.
Great video! Unfortunately, I don't drink enough to make all the delicious drinks I want to try!
Yay! History! I love the history stuff n_n
Love this. Keep it up
Wait so the coconut cooler has no coconut and no rum WTF have I been making
This sounds great
Was confused about how to pronounce this one as soon as I saw the heading - glad I am not the only one!
You guys should totally make a Lost Lake cocktail while you're on the tiki trip!
you mean this one? ruclips.net/video/fY6b940yrj4/видео.html
@@TheEducatedBarfly I did mean that one! Your catalog is getting hard to keep up with apparently.
yum
I love you guys too!
All the sun of Scotland in a cocktail
Oh, also, did the original drink use rum?
I figure the extra a is just the contemporary spelling of coconut. I know there was also a film called The Cocoanuts that came out in 1929.
Is there anything you can replace the Batavia-Arrack with?
Unaged rum agricole or cachaca would get you very close. With it only being half an ounce it would be a good sub.
Love Rick's gin joint in Casablanca
I love new episodes and tiki but hate scotch.... I'm so torn
new tropical cocktail: :D
no rum: :(
Come for the recipe, stay for the cocktail deep thoughts.
Chicago drink!
So I just noticed the Buzz Lightyear in the background and had to go back to other videos to see if it was there before and I guess I just never noticed it before. What's the story behind that lol not something you usually see on a back bar
I just love Buzz and forky and my son Wanted to get rid of those toys and couldn’t bring myself to do it. So BUZZ LIVES ON!!!
I didn't even see Forky he blends into the wall!
Hi Leandro, recipe noted and looks interesting! However, I have never come across Batavia-Arrack. What is it? What is it like & am I likely to find it in England? Nick from York
Its kinda like a funky Indonesian rum which also uses rice in the fermantation. The van Oosten brand Leandro uses isn't available in Europe (at least not in Germany) but "by the Dutch" has a selection of Arracks a few aged ones and a white one, where the latter is supposed to be closer to the van ooosten.
@@leonardschumann9212 Thank you Leonard. Nick
Though it's base is sugar cane(and some rice), it is not like any rum I've ever had. It has a briney, spicy, floral thing going on that I personally find pleasant. It's bring a bit of savory-ness to cocktails. I bet it's literally perfect with the blended scotch.
@@GeezNutz Thank you Chris, further to Leonard’s message yesterday I checked By the Dutch website and saw a few bottles. It is as pricey as Mezcal! I will though hope to buy a bottle soon. Nick
This bar setup is pimp
YESSSSSS! I'm number 5!!!
What would be a suitable sub for the Batavia-Arrack?
Did you say…. Light saber straw?
I'd slam alot of those for sure hahaha
You are missing the grenadine at 5:14 and in the description's recipe!
Thanks for the heads up!
Ugh another spirit we dont have in Canada...
Grean-dine? 🤔
Temple of Doom?
that's a good one too, the opening restaurant scene?
You should really have a doctor check out that "tropical itch."
😂
Wouldn't cocoanut be pronounced "kikow-nut"? cocoa, kikow.. no?
Tropical Itch would be another great cocktail to cover!
