    Remember in the Mid 2010s a guy in the UK Audi/Porsche forums bought a cheap Boxster and swapped the 2.7tt engine out of an Allroad into it. Unfortunately a fire caused the car to burn down during testing, but the forum members set up a donation link and helped him rebuild a better version and the car is still kicking about these days. Ever since then I've been obsessed with the idea of swapping the 2.7TT engine into a plethora of different platforms.

    • @doublesynchrohelix8613

    I put together a LS 5.7 964 that was 2640 lbs with 415 whp. Medium cam, ported heads and intake. The aircooled 3.6 weighs 535 lbs with the dry sump tank and exhaust, the LS was just under 450 lbs using a meziere electric water pump and shorty headers and no cats, just 3” mufflers. The car turned into a monster and it changed my life. Stock LS is typically not very exciting. Run a rowdy cam a lightweight flywheel and a 5/6 speed. The car would intimidate much faster cars just because of how “wrong” a lopey cammed V8 sounds in a 911 with aggressive wheel fitment and race seats / harnesses. It’s an event strapping the harnesses on and flipping the switches on the switch panel then pushing the start button… They’re lightweight, efficient, small dimensionally, large displacement internally and reliable even when highly tuned. I don’t understand the general disinterest or outright hate for the LS platform…the engines can be built into anything you want at any size and at any power level for a reasonable price.
    This V6 swap kit seems to cater towards people that are scared off by the LS swap scare tactics. I’ve been saying for a while that there’s a market for these generation cars that suffer from catastrophic engine problems with little that can be done to prevent the issues from happening again. These swap options should be flooding the market and social/community stigma should not scare people off from putting non porsche parts on their cars that have these terrible issues.
    M96/7, 928 V8’s, 914/924/944/968 all engines in my opinion could be considered open for engine swaps so they can continue to be enjoyed, not stored while insisting certain protocols/rules must be followed. If’s it’s aircooled, leave it. If you car suffers from issues like ims, bore scoring, ancient architecture, bad wiring/connectors, lack of parts availability…why not consider a more modern engine that’s widely available and more reliable especially when tuned to a higher level than stock. I think the LS (Honda, 07k, and maybe this 2.7t) 996/986/997/987 builds are perfectly suited for these chassis and they can be tuned as mild or wild as the owner wants.
    This V6 looks good, I’ll keep an open mind!
    P.S. show the dang engine bay

  • @5593doug
    @5593doug Год назад +4

    Very interesting swap and everything. But the M96 really isn’t that unreliable. IMS issues only affected less than 1% of cars and usually that was at very low mileages. And if you have a 3.4, like the car you guys have there then the dual row IMS bearings were even less likely to fail. Also the 2.7 bi-turbo isn’t known for its reliability itself. They’re known for their turbo failures and it’s not unheard of for the timing belt tensioner to fail too (former Audi mechanic here and proud Porsche 996 owner of 7 years).
    I think a project like this is very cool to do if your engine has failed or something and you’re looking to do something different, but definitely not something to recommend that lots of people do.

    • @renn27
      @renn27  Год назад +1

      It’s not solely the IMS, severe oil consumption stemming from cylinder scoring is increasingly becoming an issue even in newer 997s. Especially prevalent in colder climate cars.

    • @DeuceDeuceBravo
      @DeuceDeuceBravo Год назад +2

      IMS is relatively easy to upgrade but cylinder scoring is a very real issue and very expensive to fix properly. Not to mention the "d-chunk" and other unlikely but devastating areas of failure.

  • @dkjens0705
    @dkjens0705 Год назад +4

    If you pick up a used 2.7t engine you still have to get a rebuild before doing the swap. Adding the kit plus labor costs I bet you still end up in the $15k-$20k range. You can rebuild your M96/M97, even pick up a 3.8 scorn block (because they are all scorn). Get the block sleeved, new forged race pistons, 3.8 crank and you can have a 4.2liter flat six making close to 400BHP with free flowing exhaust. A sleeved M96/M97 is a fantastic engine and does away with the scoring/D-chunking problem. Park your 911 with the nose up and mid engine Porsche with the nose down so oil doesn't seep into the intermidiate shaft when parked for a week or longer and you don't have the IMSB problem.

    • @DeuceDeuceBravo
      @DeuceDeuceBravo Год назад +1

      A rebuild Porsche engine like this would be $20k minimum, plus labor. So this swap still saves a considerable amount of money for those who need an engine. Maybe the difference could be made up in resale value, if you're concerned about that.

    • @dkjens0705
      @dkjens0705 Год назад +1

      @@DeuceDeuceBravo I worked for a shop in Los Angeles where we did this. A normal m96/m97 rebuild was $12k. Adding sleeving, forged pistons, arp rod bolts and dyno tuning if engine volume increased by more than 200ccm would bring the total to $20k, everything included.

    • @pattyjay9999
      @pattyjay9999 Год назад +1

    • @doublesynchrohelix8613
      @doublesynchrohelix8613 7 месяцев назад

      @@dkjens0705Not sure how long ago you worked there but in New England any reputable shop is $20k plus for an EXACT replacement rebuild of your M96/97 back running if your car. Any forged parts, sleeves, ARP hardware, etc, add 50-100% to the hardware cost quick. You wouldn't do that. You'd wait for a Mezger or a Demonspeed, or Flat6 Mezger copy for $10-15k. You are then at $25k+ turnkey after rebuild. You are still sub 350hp. This kit turnkey with them doing 100% labor is $25k for 450hp basic kit with potential for much more, the engine is not made of glass like the M96... they picked this solution for a reason, but of course there are other routes.

    On a side note, I am old and remember another VAG car was treated the same way; the B3 Passat. These cars were cheap and became rolling parts cars. MK1 fans wanted the 16V engine and cable transmission. MK2/3 fans wanted the OBD1 12V VR6. Now the B3 Passat is rarely seen on the streets.

      Would be kind of cost prohibitive considering the investment you'd have at the end vs what it would be worth. I was thinking that too until I did some math, nobody is going to pay you $45k for your swapped Boxster when at the end of the day you would buy a 997, 996TT Tip (and later manual swap), C4S for $35k, etc... There is a stigma with driving a 986/987 no matter how fun they are or how good a vehicle and that affects price.

      The other factor is how low and far back the weight is - higher up is problematic. This looks a lot more promising than an LS... they are so (relatively) top heavy and quite long. This appears to fit the factory mounting plate and potentially the stock transmission mounting, which is impressive.

    This is appealing also because im assuming that Audi engine is weghing less than the M96 flat 6.. Renegade in LV that does the LS swap (which i never been interested in, unless i had a 968 Porsche or 944).. says the aluminum LS engine weighs 40 lbs less than the M96.
    If that Audi engine is even much less than that, thats better for a weight balance and and pullin weight out of that heavy rear end. I dread going under my 996 to work on it but do it anyway lol
    Props to u guys for doin this.. wish u wouldve mentioned to total kit cost but ill go over to your website lol. Thanks.. Nice work

    I loved the power delivery of the 2.7 Biturbo in my B5 RS4 and loved the handling of my 996... This combo should be a winner, but how heavy is the engine compared to the original and how much higher up is that weight?

    • @renn27

      2.7 weighs less, and the center of mass is same if not lower than M96. Its an iron block, with aluminum heads, and turbo down low.

    surprised the trans doesn't just bolt up to the 2.7t, the cayman/boxter trans bolts right up to the 2.7t (same bolt pattern on the bellhousing)

    • @renn27
      @renn27  Год назад +5

      It’s very close most of the pattern is identical! The spacer provides a few extra missing mounting holes. Additionally the spacer gives proper clearance for our clutch/flywheel package.

    • @d993s

      It DOES bolt up although the trans has fewer bolts but enough. And a little work notching the starter area on the trans bellhousing (different location on 2.7t and other Audi engines)

    Can I purchase a motor and send it to you guys to prep it for a build?
    Meaning can I purchase a new (rebuilt) 2.7t from you. Or purchase one online (one we agree is a good quality engine). Have it shipped to you. Then pay to rebuild/prep engine for this swap?
    Basically want to purchase Full Integration Kit. Then install kit with my best friend. Think it will be a great project but want make sure the engine is built proof? Or at least as built proof as you can make it. Being that you guys are Jedi masters of the 2.7t.
    Any help is much appreciated and thank you in advance.
