In today's video, we're keeping it simple. The Ragnarok get it's new hull and we show off why it's better. I also go through a quick "guide" on hull design...aka just some tips. But anyway! It's sleek and looks good!

I just wanna go ahead and thank everyone for supporting me thus far and subscribing to the channel. It means a lot that I've somehow gained 64 something odd people who think that I make GOOD??? content. Thanks yall.
Crazy how just a few days ago I saw one of your videos recommended on my homepage and I was like "who is this?". Now you're almost to 100 subs, congrats man! Keep it up!
Where Robbaz !!!!
For sure go for quad barrels. Do that synchronized thing so they offset the firing. Much DAKKA! The hull looks great just need to paint it red like the original. You could keep it metal and put the bottom as alloy for some buoyancy. The propulsion is a huge improvement. Redundancy is pretty much a requirement for todays standards. I say keep the original superstructure so it's easy to identify it as the Ragnarok. Great job so far!
The spirit of the Ragnorak dictates that it employs the most dakka with as little consideration for efficiency. Nice hull, I think you should go with Azipods. Azipods are meta and give you a good turning radius
The Ragnorak Ends worlds, it has no need for efficiency.
My vote is for quad barrels and steam engines scattered throughout the ship. Quad barrels because it's nice to step out of one's comfort zone every once in a while, and you're very correct in that it's much cooler, and steam engines because Robbaz did intend to upgrade the Ragnarok with steam power later on in his series.
Also, you're right about the Ragnarok's inspiration, as he originally wanted it to evoke the Iowa class battleship 'that you see on the Discovery channel', but he later changed a lot of stuff following his original upload to the workshop, introducing things like a helipad for him to dock a small 'Peacock' helicopter to, a (failed) attempt to add a submarine docking bay at the bow, some spaced heat-resistant armor and smoke dispensers, a satellite-busting upward-facing APS cannon, and even set up a bunch of thrusters and jet engines to turn it into Space Battleship Ragnarok.
I haven't watched his series in forever, but it was definitely one of my first introductions to this game. He wanted it to be an anti-everything no matter the cost pretty much.
SCREW IT MORE DAKKA!!!
Also, the hull does look sick. And I think the "makeover" superstructure would be cool to see.
Love the new hull!
I'd say keep the 4-barrel design, they can be made quite effiecient by using rotational symmetry. Also
Turret caps need to be flat and wide to be faithfull, but definetly need a new design. Also
I'd personally go for a steam engine for efficency and i like being able to walk through the engine and boiler room, robbaz does like his walkability.
The Azipods seem to work well here, maybe have a backup inside the hull for some added redundancy, maybe some bow thrusters too.
I whould have a more modern superstructure but keep the styling like the vertical windows, maybe like space battleship yamato?
She definetly needs a bigger proper smokestack though.
Also depending on how far you want to change things, you could fill the area used by the current ciws that you said you wanted to move with some AA arm style missile launchers like the Mk-26 or Mk-5, maybe using wireless conectors to make them very compact, since that whould allow keeping the walking area while also being more usefull than deck guns.
That lump at the bow is called a bulbous bow, its used to counter waves caused by the normal bow to increase efficiency by decreasing drag and that top going outgoing part is called a flaired bow to help against waves crashing over the deck.
Also as someone who likes his cigar boats, i have the main armour belt be square and have the rounded hull added on, and the space maybe filled with even more armour on critical places, but that whould probably not work well here since it increases the width even further, which whould cut into the speed and also require deco work if you want it to be fully smooth.
Can't wait to see the next part, this is starting too shape out good!
13:26 thank you for teaching me how to use breadboards in under 20 seconds :)
For guns, I think since the turrets on the Ragnarok are so wide, having only 2 guns would look weird, so I would prefer the 4 gun ones.
Also, on turret armor: you can either make turrets tiny or armor them more than your citadel.(otherwise it doesn't make sense for your guns to die before your engines do) Since Robbaz made the turrets big, I guess we need to armor them more than the citadel. Since they are very flat, armoring the roof above the firing pieces will be very hard.
On the topic of engines: because of space contraints, Borderwise had to use terribly inefficient engines that will significantly reduce the ships cost effectiveness. So if you want to use this ship in the campaign, I recommend going for at least 500 efficiency, preferably over 600.
As for steam vs fuel: Steam can get better efficiency and power density while fuel is very responsive to changes in power (or battery) demand. If you decide to use fuel, there's a good and small fuel engine on the workshop called "Ideal 5x5x5 Engine" (well, it's a bold claim for the name, also put radiators on the unused 2 blocks) which has a nice form factor and makes for nice redundancy. As for steam engines: with the right idea, you can build large steams engines without any pipes which massively boosts their survivability.(seriously, large pistons and crankshafts alone have excellent HP and armor values) If you want examples, you can go in the tech discussion tab on the ftd discord server and ask there or I could join your discord server and send you some examples that way.
Also, the "technically" optimal steam engine design is a 7x7x(variable) small steam engine. However, that design is absolutely awful for survivability and reduncancy so I don't recommend it.
Feel free to join the server, its in the description. Your inputs will be greatly appreciated.
So gun armoring. Big deal. I think i am going to be…lose with my interpretation of Robbaz’s turret caps to say the least. As long as they are “big and square-ish” like his, the fine details dont matter. So we can armor the hell out of the turret cap, no concern.
Turret neck. That needs armor. Im currently contending with how much vertical space im going to afford to the turrets, so if they will need to just be “armored” or “REALLY FUCKING ARMORED” is a question yet to be answered.
I am going to naturally prefer steam where possible; I simply find it easier nowadays. But a couple of 5x5x5 blocks crammed around the ship? Now that sounds very interesting.
But anyway! Pure efficiency isn’t my goal, despite me ruminating over it most videos. Survivability and lethality are what I care most about. As long as it can chug around neter at like 35 m/s and not need daily resupplies, we’re good! Tournaments be damned and min maxing also be damned!
If you are still wondering what the sonar thinging on the bow is called it is called a bulbous bow. In real life it is there to create a wave that cancels out the wave create by the bow itself. I think navies find that it is also a convenient place to put sonar or something.
the beast that had been sleeping is about to come back to its prime time fellas, Ragnarok is getting a face lift
the superstructure needs to at the very least have the same structural ribbing on the outside, looks too cool and correct to go without
For pure Fun, and a bit of a middle-finger to ERA, 4x 250mm, high RPM, Sabot-HEAT. Not enough ERA on the planet can stop it, only armor and airgaps work lol. (Yes Sabot makes the Heat do less dmg, doesn't matter if the sabot round can punch through two layers of heavy armor and the HEAT metric is still enough to kill squishy components in one shot).
Also, why not go for a middleground? One Fuel engine bank of somewhat more efficient engines than borderwise's as a backup power center, one main steam engine somewhere well-defended, then you can sprinkle aux systems around the ship elsewhere.
Could even be cheeky and have them run at different power levels depending on the engine load/demand.
Interesting ideas. Although for the "Piss off, ERA" role I was most likely going to delegate that to secondaries with something like high RPM hesh, APHEAT, etc etc.
The hull is incredible I wish I could get my hulls to look that sleak especially with the sloped bow like that
I would go with quad barrels with armour between the Tetris. I found this worked well in some of my double turrets but they didn't have ejectors.
Also for turret style there are a few WW2 era quad designs, Britain had one and so did France. Not sure if others ever did, I know italy looked at it pre-war which led to some funny looking turret prototypes.
Also the sonar bulge you mentioned is properly termed a bulbous bow, it's to increase fuel efficiency at normal speeds. It tends to get used for sonar now just because it's convenient.
1:38 makes sense. Quad would be simpler than triple as quad is just making two twin APS Tetris’s and then putting them together.
1. Ragnarok needs that badass factor so I'm going with quad
2. I'm on Team Steam! (the Fuel Engine banks seem more resilient but who cares?)
COOLER 😎
Reminds me of a pike, so I will refer to this hull as a pike hull
For the superstructure, I would love to see the eyepatch back from the pre-Space BB Yamato design, it gave the ship so much personality!
Quad barrels are good for the fun factor and they could use some variation of hollow point (i would use hollow point frag with a bit of emp)
Dakka dakka dakka dakka dakka
Evil borderwise !
7:05 what about turtleback plates to defend against bow-on and stern-on hits?
17:34 yeah it is. 35 meters per second is 126 kilometers per hour, 78 miles per hour and 68 knots respectively. That is absolutely ridiculous, especially for a large capital ship. That’s hydrofoil levels of speed.
Go quad with 8m autoloaders
8m is very alluring, although it doesn’t fit in my current turret holes and its not dps or volume effective lmao. The likely choices are 3, 4, and 7m
yooo EP 3
Good quad guns should be nearly as efficient if not as efficient as duals, so 100% go quads.
As for the engines, ***d o n t*** follow borderwises example, 2-3 large steam engines are better stat wise, and each piston has like 9k hp so they take a couple hits before dying.
Trick for the guns is rotational symmetry
Imo the super should be a blocky core super with a sleaker upper super, bridge, mast ect.
Also make sure to keep the mcwalrus otherwise it isnt the Ragnarok anymore.
I favour steam over fuel engines, if only because they are more interesting (and what the original had)
I think I am going to also build a Ragnarok, maybe make a Ragnarok tournament with only Ragnaroks allowed at the end?
Btw I think that coolness is no.1 because Ragnarok is a cool ship.
Honestly? I'd say you ought to mix efficiency and coolness in Barrel counts. Why not make one of the main turrets a dual barrel CRAM just for fun? Could offer some great potential for finishing blows. Depending on how many main guns you want... One quad barrel APS, one Dual barrel APS, one dual barrel CRAM.
Just a suggestion tho, and i dont claim to be an expert in SBB armament XD
Quad Barrel and Steam a
I think a new bridge would be nice just to fit better with the new general shape of the ship, and quad barrelle guns!
I know I am late to the party but QUAD
Quad barrels
Going with a fuel engine might also help out with aim point spoofing due to the larger amount of blocks. Granted it might not help that much, but any litte bit can help.
As for turrets I feel that quads might fit the style that the ragnarok has going for it already.
The superstructure could use a bit of a touch up as it does look dated, however I don't thing you should stray too far from its original design.
Aimpoint hogging is a good point. Although I don't particularly...want the engines to get shot at, at least it'll keep aim off the guns.
And i'm leaning quads, honestly. GMODISM has some nasty quad railguns on his new ship I might look at.
And completely agreed.
why not triple barel? is there reason or you just dont wanna?
Triple barrel tetris is inherently a hassle. Cubes don't like to be divided by 3 efficiently, but divisions by 4 or 2 are easier.
@@Brenzo44 oh...
@@Brenzo44 the i guess 4 barrel would be better since its name is ragnarok
@@Brenzo44 generally for 3 barrel I just got as many 4 clip autoloaders that can fit in a turret then remove as many to get rid to make a multiple of 3, and fill I'll the until with railgun/recoil absorbers.
I'm voting efficiency just cause shredding the meg looks cooler than 4 barrels
I like your bow, but if I were designing it, I would lessen the slope and remove the bulb to make it look more similar to the planned Montana class battleships.
Two cannons because efficient is cool if it is pushed to the limit
efficient steam pistons
Those extra 4 m/s of speed just from hull shaping make a huge difference in moving on the campaign map, allowing you to get places faster and for less consumption. Those not seeing the logistic advantage clearly don't play the campaign enough to appreciate it.
Please at least use decent engines. The built in Harmony prefab is pretty good
quads. robaz all ways chose looks over function.
