The James F. D. Lanier House
The James F. D. Lanier House is more than a testament to the Gilded Age. It is an exuberant celebration. The magnificent Beaux-Arts mansion at 123 East 35th Street, between Park and Lexington Avenues in the historic Manhattan neighborhood of Murray Hill, presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a New York City landmark and a living work of art.
The James F. D. Lanier House stands 33 feet wide, 75 feet deep, and 66 feet tall, with 11,638 square feet of palatial living space across eight levels. One of the city’s largest single-family homes, it is also among the grandest. The brick and limestone mansion was built between 1901 and 1903 for James and Harriet Lanier. The renowned architectural firm Hoppin & Koen designed this house. Another Hoppin & Koen’s notable work is the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Presidential Library in Hyde Park, New York. The James F. D. Lanier House remains one of their finest residential works in New York City.
The original architectural finishes and materials have been meticulously preserved for more than 40 years under the stewardship of the current owner, with thoughtful improvements sensitive to the original design.
Among the significant features of this extraordinary mansion are the fluted Ionic pilasters; dentil and modillion cornices; carved stonework; stately stone porch, and copper mansard roof with three dormers. Designated by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1979, this house also has the honor of being listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 1982.
First Floor
The doors open to a vestibule with decorative iron and gold leaf gates. The magnificent details begin at the arched entrance hall with its high, rose medallion ceiling, crowned with an antique crystal chandelier. The magnificent gallery is adorned with carved niches, classical statuary, monumental carved-stone basins and urns under an exquisite crystal chandelier.
The gallery leads guests into the elegant reception room with full bar where guests can have
hors d’oeuvres and cocktails before dinner. From the reception room, the gallery flows into the grand formal dining room, which seats 16 under a monumental rock-crystal chandelier.
Second Floor
The mahogany staircase and a wood-paneled private elevator rise to the second floor gallery landing, which is flanked by an inviting living room with gold leaf wainscoting. The grand living room has an alluring green palette, beautiful parquet floors, a 14-foot ceiling with chandelier, and antique fireplace. Adjoining the living room is an oak-paneled library/study with an original mini wet bar.
Suites
The James F. D. Lanier House offers nine generously appointed bedrooms (five of which are suites), seven luxuriously appointed bathrooms, and three powder rooms. A staff wing includes an office, three bedrooms, and two bathrooms.
The Garden Level
The garden level is enhanced by a 400 sq. ft. chef’s kitchen with a Garland commercial gas range, Bosch dishwashers, 2 Bosch ovens, dumbwaiter, 1 freezer, 3 fridges, double sink, Corian kitchen countertops, pantry, breakfast room, powder room, and a private courtyard garden. There’s also a fitness center, sauna room, massage room, and full bathroom. The stairs to the sub-basement lead to a 1,000-bottle temperature-controlled wine cellar as well as all the updated mechanicals.

This is living, and so few of us get to do so. The townhouse is beautiful.
I’m just glad someone chose to keep it this way and buy it because it prevents another Bill Gates mansion, or the disproportionate amount of internal guttings of neo classical buildings across NYC. Buy a room at the Knickerbocker and get a modernist room.
Real estate in New York fascinates me because what you can see on the outside often betrays what is on the inside.
This is a lovely home for the super wealthy, but it may be more than I need for me and my wife, so thanks for the tour.
So beautiful, much more grandeur than more expensive townhouse in other areas in manhattan like soho, UES, although Murray hill location is quite perfect, simply gorgeous house🥂🥂🥂
Love the greco roman details
$33 million actually seems well-priced for everything you get. It's beautiful, historic, and large.
With so much space, you could easily turn some bedrooms into media, exercise, and game rooms.
And the basement the home no doubt has could be converted to an indoor swimming pool.
The only things I would wish it to have are a rooftop terrace and a garage.
Thank you
Love everything about it
Beautiful
I will own it.
Oh My …..beautiful beautiful beautiful……you guys should have done a longer clip….
I am gifting this house to my son yunus ❤
Its so beautiful 😍
Wow, this is absolutely gorgeous.
The ultimate fantasy.🙌
What a spectacular building! I'm glad it hasn't been too modernised inside, yet I'm not at all partial to the diarrhoea tones of the interior decoration. Pure hues are always so much nicer than muddy tones.
Spectacular!!!!
Supreme.
wow that is amazing, very good taste
Thanks!
Stylish mansion. Love the copper roof.
Does it come with it's contents?
East 35 st is beautiful.. between Park Ave and Lexington Ave. In case you don't know it 2 blocks from the JP Morgan mansion and library .
I'm working on a Sketchup project of this house (just as a hobby), with swimming-pool, gym and a sunken patio in the subterranean level, plus a big rooftop. Soon to be available online.
Now that sounds freakin' *AWESOME*!!! Don't forget to get rid of all that gilded age horror stuff. Considering what that represents is _disgusting_. But would definitely want to see the finished product here, good luck dude 👍
did you complete it?
Superb!
Thank you
spectacular
That's how you do it, minus some of the busts. Beautiful, and not all the modern grey and white that some people think is attractive.
i want this so much
Really tho?? Because you're going to shell out half the price of the property to update it from the so called gilded age nonsense. If you don't know that time period look it up, *_disgusting_* 👎
@@edworldinmyhands1061 i know man but the shell is nice and a few things can stay
@@GorgeousBaker1 yes I said that, the address is nice. along with the outer shell but donate it to the homeless ❤
Its horrible location is its biggest downfall. This mansion would've been listed for way over $80 million if it was situated anywhere between east 63rd street to East 90th street.
why what's wrong with that street? PS:I'm not from New York
@@ehahaproductions680 not a great part of town. Mostly just offices and condos. Not great transit access either.
@@jimbo1637 yeah, someone living there is going to be using subway loll
@@igvc1876 rich people value their time even more than normal people do. And if you value your time, you aren't going to be driving in Manhattan.
@@jimbo1637 some do, most don't. they have drivers, and they just work in the back of their limo.
Don't get me wrong but, this in NYC so $33M seems suspiciously low for such an uniquely large, historical mansion... Sooo what's the catch?
no body is moving into democrat run NYC.
It's in an ok but not "fancy" neighborhood. It would be a lot more if it were on the Upper East Side where most of these mansions are.
There was a small problem with ghosts, back in the 80s. You know, built on a burial ground, didn't move the bodies...blah blah. But they've sprayed for poltergeists since, so it's all fine now.
@@TrackerNeil Its truly Spooktacular ! :)
It's haunted, duh
Love it this the house this is the one am buying its going to take me some but I will buy it 😂
Now this is worth 33 million !
so beautiful if I had the money I would buy it
Good job with the renovations, preserving the look and feel of the original 1903 details, yet with some modern updates where appropriate. IMHO, the main drawback is the neighborhood. It's a decent neighborhood for offices etc, but not as desirable as the UES or CPW where it comes to location.
Thank you
Bedrooms 👌
I am buying it
No indoor garage at all?
This will take a large staff to,maintain U
Whoa
Is there an elevator?
It looks like Green Goblin's house! "You know how much I sacrificed?" 😝
I’ll take a luxury suite at the Astor well staffed
Imagine playing hide and seek with your children in this house.
For the person who doesn't like Murray Hill , probably New Jersey is for you
le quartier des français 🤩je ne comprends pas ce que vie t faire des statues grecques dans une maison à la française l entrée est prétentieuse et complètement ratée !!!! a part ça superbe bâtisse ❤️❤️❤️pleine de charme
Haud on there, ye French-writing varmit! Isn't classical Greek culture the source of much Western European, and (hence), North American. Sure, maybe some uniquely French statuary as well - I assume that would be possible? But I see nothing out of place with Greek.
All I see is resident evil vibes. I would bepushing things to see if a secret room would appear
Υπέροχα
Sheer Opulence & Elegance ! Too bad it's in N.Y.
New York.
It's still on the market, but for almost half the asking price.
Dirt Cheap. Location, location, location is the first rule in real estate that should never be ignored.
Rush-in monthly real-estate tax comes down to a $68K+. Or yearly $900k
Townhouse new York.
Its beautiful but I just don't like the draperies they look like old gowns.
That's a minuature palace...
I’m watching this while being sure I can’t afford food today n that upsets me
I would not live in a mansion id get lost
Absolutely beautiful! Too bad it’s on east 35th street:(
Had the same thought.
How is this a problem?
@@jeanperalta468 I would like to know that as well
I also do want to know
Doesn't look like there's much of a view. Perhaps, the city grew up around this rock. The buildings to the sides of it aren't as nice, nor as well appointed.
🥰😍🤩😘🤗
Too bad it is in New York City. Terrible crime situation now that the city is Dem run.
Needs to be in the countryside. It is very beautiful.
After Jeffrey Epstein, I’ll never look at these properties the same again...
Lovely but for that kind of money some land surrounding it would be nice. Not jammed in a loud dirty city.
Stop the Insanity.
It doesn't have a drive way neither a full backyard nor any greenery (i.e., trees, grass, etc.), just a bunch of surrounding buildings and some dusty trees 🌳 struggling to stay alive around all that smog.
🤣
Very overrated city well past its prime.
Would never want to live in Manhattan.
As if you can afford to live in Manhattan.
cheap decoration for such a grand house.
Yeah it's almost all gut rehab. And that gilded age crap is *bad* Karma anyways 🤮
No sense for proportions, no finesse, some outright absurd stylistic mishaps - but as good as it gets in the US, i'll give you that. If you want to do nouveau riche, look at the Hôtel de la Païva, Paris. That's how you do nouveau riche.
Hell nah fuh outta here
