  • This video shows a simple Electromyography (EMG) demonstration, sampling from the right extensor digitorum muscle group. This demonstration shows how a needle EMG recording can be made. ***Importantly, in an actual diagnostic clinical setting, the Neurologist performing the EMG would be holding the EMG needle and adjusting the position of the EMG needle throughout the study. In this example, the Neurologist is not holding the needle electrode so as not to obscure the view of the needle.

    How deep do the needles go

      Depends on the muscle being examined, how large it is, and how deep it is from the surface of the skin. What is important to note, is that the recording surface of the needle electrode is in the very tip of the needle, so the entire needle does not need to be inserted into the muscle to perform the study.

      EMG reveals the electrical charactoristics of muscle, and the innervation of a muscle. This is a useful test for examination for muscular disease, peripheral nerve dysfunction and nerve-root dysfunction. EMG is always performed in combination with NCS. These studies are performed for the diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders.
