    Patrick, when I was active in my singing career, I was contracted to tour England. This included a trip to Edinburgh and Aberdeen. Your beautiful train trip brought all this back to me, and makes me want take the trip to Inverness, where I had not been before. Thank you very much.

    Hi Patrick! Very enjoyable video brings back a lot of memories when I was young Travelling up to Scotland on the sleeper with Mum & Dad in the late 60’s, at one time you could even put the car on the train which was a novel way of travelling! The family travelled up to Arbroath every year to see my dads younger sister, and it was a pleasant experience! I hope Mum and Dad are looking down and smiling!

    Hi Patrick. What a great video. Very informative indeed. I travelled with my girlfriend on the Fort William sleeper in 2011. We found the whole experience very enjoyable and quite exciting too! It has to be one of my most memorable journeys. The thought of leaving the hustle and bustle of London and waking up surrounded by mountains was wonderful. I must admit I did have a little trouble sleeping too but soon got off. I woke up somewhere around Crianlarich (also Edinburgh when separating the train!)to see snow falling and red deer! The journey back was even more interesting as the snow was over 12 inches on most platforms after Spean Bridge. All main roads had closed earlier and so did the trains later the next day! I remember leaning out of the rear coach window in the dark in heavy snow across Rannoch Moor on the way back. Every sound the train made was absorbed and dulled by the snow, eerie and spectacular at the same time!

      Hi Adam sounds a really great trip with the snow down, I found for a lot of the trip I was busy filming and took while to get to sleep but still a great experience. I wish I had filmed from rear coach windows would of been a great view but did not think about it at the time. Thanks for watching and your interesting comments all the best Pat

      If you need help getting to sleep, try a few of the fine Single Malt Whiskies on offer (at a very reasonable price!) in the Lounge Car before you retire to your cabin for the night!

    The Caledonian Sleeper has been on my wish list for some time now, and it's great to have a detailed insight into it. Thank you! I've done the UK three peaks challenge a few times and the last time I was in Fort William I peered into a sleeper cabin at the station - the nearest I've got so far. Thanks again, keep up the good work!

    Great video thank you.
    I have travelled that route many times but have never stretched my wallet to the cost of a cabin. Always slumming it in the seated compartment.
    I think you sold the berth and the journey well! Certainly a long way to Inverness if you can't sleep though, as my first few times.
    Plus, from experience when my train broke down once, (before we had even departed) they look after you and want to get you home in the most convenient way.

    • @KempSimon
      @KempSimon 7 лет назад +1

      If you want to travel overnight by Sleeper train in a private or a shared cabin, you'd better go between now and May 2018 as that's when the new rolling stock from CAF in Spain enters service. Because many of the cabins will be en suite, or have double beds, the trains won't be able to carry so many passengers, which means that the price of travel tickets can only move in one direction ... UP!

    • @underwaterdick
      @underwaterdick 7 лет назад

      Simon Kemp cheers for the heads up! Planning a few trips to Ft William so that is my transport sorted... If not just for the experience then to avoid the 600 mile drive each way!

    • @KempSimon
      @KempSimon 7 лет назад +1

      To judge from the Posts and Reviews on the Serco Caledonian Sleeper's Facebook page, the seated carriage seems to generate more complaints from passengers about defective toilets, harsh lighting, excessive heat, excessive cold, unhelpful staff, uncomfortable seats and unruly neighbours as does the rest of the train put together. Which is why I'm prepared to fork out a few quid extra for the "luxury" of a single-berth, private cabin.

    I've previously travelled between EUS and INV on daytime services only. I have always thought that I wouldn't get much sleep on the sleeper as I'm 6'7" tall and the berths not designed with tall folk in mind! To that end this excellent video is an honest appraisal, and confirmed my previous supposition! I am hopeful that accommodation will be of more generous proportions when the new rolling stock is introduced in 2018. Next time you're in the north, take the Far North Line, perhaps to do some wild camping ex Altnabreac (ABC), the remotest station on the entire network.

      Hi John the trip was a good one for the experience but I did not get a lot of sleep. Next day I travelled via Aberdeen,Perth Glasgow Edinburgh back to Sheffield so new I would catch up on sleep. Its surprising how the time flies when your filming and trying to get that scene you want . Hopefully the new rolling stock maybe more comfortable as you say. That farthest north station looks interesting. Thanks for watching and comments Pat

    Hi Pat, Always wondered what the sleeper was like... now I know. Great video. If you like railway journeys and views I highly recommend going up to Fort William and going through to Mallaig and also the Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh route. Views are quite out of this world, I'm quite lucky living up here. You could make a trip of the whole thing and go up to Mallaig, ferry over to Skye then round to Kyle (by road) , then train to Inverness and back down. Cheers Kyle

    Definitely must do this in 2023. Probably up to Fort William to go on the Jacobite Steam Train to Mallaig and back. Inverness is somewhere I would like to go back to and do properly. Hopefully that is something I will do this year? These carriages have since been replaced with new carriages with their own en suite shower/toilet. Hi Patrick. Recently done the sleeper to Inverness, your video was invaluable as it was a trip that’s been on my list for a long time! A great (and cheap) run to London on Virgin Trains then a few hours and lunch in the capital, then SEVERAL PINTS in the pub opposite Euston Station! The run to Inverness was great, a nice meal and relaxing in the lounge car with a single malt or three! I don’t think you said how you returned to Sheffield? I decided to take an afternoon flight back to Manchester, Inverness has a lovely little airport and very stress free, a superb end to a great couple of days! Anyway keep up the good work Pat, your videos are fascinating the Train trips in particular!👍👍👍

      Antony Fisher Hi Antony, you sound like you had a great trip similar to what I enjoy doing, a train trip, a few pints and anyway you can get home.I actually had about 30 mins in Inverness then set of back via Perth and Glasgow down to Manchester and back to Sheffield.
      It's all part of me trying to travel on all the UK rail network done about 7000 miles now, wether I will complete it I don t now a I have recently done a couple of trips in France and it was fantastic and I feel the urge to travel further on each trip. We sound like we have a common interest, all the best and have some good rail journies, Pat

      Hi Eamon, yes its a really interesting trip leaving the busy capital then ending up in the wild countryside of Scotland. I travel on the train doing different areas of the rail network each month hoping to cover all the UK rail network eventually, some of the more interesting ones like this and the euro star I have filmed. The majority are just a lot of countryside and railway stations difficult to film and make interesting. Thanks for watching Pat

    what a great account of your trip, love the way you showed us all the bits inside the cabin, very useful and hall trip, can you say if the train has any cabins that have two lower beds for folks that can't climb up ladders etc. thanks again

      Hi thinking back I think all the cabins had bunk beds apart from first class which had lower bed only. One thought you could get two adjoining cabins for solo use but they have a connecting door, so you get double the space and two lower beds, may cost a bit more than sharing a cabin with bunk beds but would provide what you were looking for, hope this helps all the best Pat

      Patrick Dickinson Be about the same as a long distance flight :-( Only good thing is that you can walk around and stretch your legs. You would definitely need one of those collar/ neck rest thingies, ear plugs, face mask and a lightweight sleeping bag. Something tells me ( probably personal experience in these matters) that they will be running the air conditioning, usually at the most inopportune moment, which isn't exactly conductive to getting enough kip.
      Oh by the way: You were smart to take extra water. The one bottle they gave you isn't going to cut

      Hi Andy I love travelling on trains basically I like to be going somewhere, just travelling. A few years ago I got a large map of UK rail network and decided to try and travel on all the railway network. This journey was one I had always wanted to do but waited until 60 to get my senior railcard. I left Sheffield around 2-00pm went over to Manchester down to Euston, from Euston up to Inverness on sleeper, got there 08-40 at 9-00 on my way back to Aberdeen, Perth , Glasgow,Edinburgh then back to Sheffield following evening. Sleeper trip was £100 and other travel was £100 therefore £200 , no railcard would of cost £300. Managed to get a few pints at various stops, Inverness just there for 20 mins. I did it just for the fun of travelling on the train. Thanks for watching and comments all the best Pat

On previous videos you mention your children at the Teenage stage and how a stressful they can be. Hi Angus As I only had a small rucksack the luggage was not a problem. There's room to store a couple of suitcases on their sides underneath the lower bunk bed (in a shared cabin) and there's also a luggage rack over the washbasin and window which will take a small holdall and a briefcase.

      If you travel First Class on the Caledonian Sleeper trains (ie a single-berth, private cabin) you have priority access to the Lounge Car and can reserve a table by paying £10 in advance which buys you a main course and a half-bottle of wine. There's a reasonable choice of food and drink - my favourite is, of course, the Haggis, Neeps and Tatties washed down by a nip or two of fine Single Malt Whisky - at reasonable prices. The Caledonian Sleeper web site and Facebook page will tell you all that you need to know about the on-board facilities. No showers on the trains (yet) but you can usually shower for free in the washrooms at your destination.

      You can buy one ticket direct from the Caledonian Sleeper web site which covers both travel and accommodation. Alternatively, if you already hold an inter-available National Rail travel ticket valid for a journey between London and Scotland by day train, you can pay extra to reserve a cabin on an overnight service .... but this is the more expensive of the two options. Check out the CS web site for up-to-date prices.

      Hi the price for a single use sleeper cabin is about £150 ,i got it for £100 due to senior railcard discount, that covers full journey London to Inverness. The sleeper seat only is about £50 or £35 with discount. You can find all prices and book on Trainline website, thanks Pat

      fatwalletboy2 It would be great to see the old sleepers on another line but I doubt it as they seem to be cutting back on everything, thanks for your comments all the best Pat

    Is there a shower?

    • @patrickdickinson6492
      @patrickdickinson6492  7 лет назад +1

      hi Julian, just been thinking and I ,am sure there are not any showers on the sleeper train just a basin to wash in your cabin, and toilets at the end of each sleeper carriage. At the main London stations and perhaps Inverness there maybe showers in the first class waiting rooms, you will have to pay for a first class ticket to use these of course. Hope helpful thanks Pat

      You need to be careful about calling people inbeciles when you dont know what you are talking about. You obviously know nothing about railways or you would know that that the up line always leads to London no matter from where you are travelling. That is why the train from London to Inverness uses the down line. If it used the up line there would be a dreadful accident just outside Euston. Now who is the imbecile
