I learned with this book! Got my 1st garage band audition in 1989. We played “Sweet Child O Mine”. Set up my kit lefty and rocked out with my mini-sticks. Bass player told me to add a fill and I was like “You mean a mini-solo?” 10 minutes later I was waiting in the driveway for Mom to pick me up. Those guys didn’t know crap. (My solo career was short lived because you can only play Wipe Out once before folks want to beat you up!) mom? Come and get me.
Maybe so. Maybe so. BUT, you wanna know who thought I DID know crap? My mom. She cut out my school picture and pasted it on drummer # 11 in the book. Very inspirational, indeed! (My shirt had three snaps and you betcha, I had everyone of them snapped. I looked nice)
@@drummersnare6276 because he was probably quoting the book in the video emc flips to a page that explains drum fills but the book calls them mini solos
3:31. Exactly. My jazz experience is minimal, but in college, the one year I played in the jazz ensemble, I learned that it was the bass that set the beat, style, and tempo. The drums were there for accent and color….and we had a phenomenal jazz drummer in Bobby Adams. Oddly enough, I can’t remember the name of the bassist. LOL. (By the way, my year in jazz ensemble was way back in 1981.)
I'd argue that the interaction between bass and drum differ for jazz vs rock. In jazz, the bass is the time keeper and defines rhythmic structure, and the drum adds color, but for rock it's often the other way around. I guess that's why in Jazz having a bass but no drums is more common than the other way around, while in rock there are duos of drum and guitar, but bass and no drums is pretty much unheard of.
I still can't get past that they sent a drum head. Just the head. Maybe they had a coupon stashed inside that you send in and they send you the rest of the drum? (Although I've never seen a snare drum that small before.)
I will agree that Ringo may not have been the greatest rock drummer, but dammit….he was the drummer for the freaking Beatles!!! He was picked because he has a better beat then Stu Best. Debatable yes, but Ringo’s position in the rock world cannot be denied.
Ringo beat out Stu Best making him AT WORST the second-worst drummer in the world! Just kidding, I love Ringo, and I would argue he was absolutely the key to the band's success. Yes, the others are legendary songwriters and musicians in their own right, but the band wasn't called "The Songwritingles."
@@KalaschniKlown I am sure there are people that think that unfortunately. I mean tbf they were both a good fit for their bands with the difference ofc being that Ringo could keep time... you know the thing a drummer should do if nothing else.
Youch! That was painful. Having seen many drum instruction books through 40+ yrs of playing, that is the worst one that I have seen. It is no wonder that it is no longer made anymore. Yikes, the poor kids who got that as a gift or to start them off.
My book came with special drum sticks where you mount 2 double A batteries in them to play the bounce roll. Be a Drummer. Make a Ton of money. Meet Chicks
Wow! this book was so inspirational that I learned drums too! Although, my sticks were about twice as big as I would've liked them, and my snare drum actually worked. It was so sad, but I went with it, even holding the sticks "correctly". After getting rejected by at least 50 bands because I should "stop playing f***ing wipeout the entire time and adding a drum solo every 8 measures", and also completely skipping school entirely (especially 6th grade band class), I was allowed into a band made up of entirely 9 year-olds. I couldn't play any of the music given to me because it was too refined and the notes actually lined up. I could tell my mini-solos (fills for uncultured people) really stood out because everyone stopped playing entirely. I don't know if they liked my solos or my epic drum head better. Earlier today, my dad left for some milk. I don't know why, but I think it's so I can get stronger bones to improve my drumming. So, overall, I loved that book so much, and it really improved my life.
3:36 I gotta say this paragraph made my mind explode, by the fact that even though drum kit is an instrument, it is part of a category called percussion. The funny thing is that drums aren’t the most oldest type of instrument, but rather percussion. Also the rock music part is stupid because it isn’t actually drums, more like clave. Heck, clave isn’t even suitable because it’s made out of wood, not rocks. Funny book indeed!
I wish you would please post the notation for the patterns you are playing. Us beginners have a hard time figuring them out but they sound really cool.
Could you make the song "here comes the bride" but make it EPIC. Cause my brother's getting married and he'd love it. Use whatever instruments you want. But it gets +10 epicness if you use the megatenors.
My drumline tech showed me ur video on the terrible traditional where the finger breaks and then he taught me like full on traditional(now i really am the only one in my district)
Ok, I'll be that guy and defend one part of this abomination. This was likely designed for kids in elementary school. The smaller stick size is likely more appropriate for their smaller hands. They are comically small for us, but I bet a kid in their target age group would find them easier to hold (and use with real instruction) than full size sticks.
Good morning and this is video number 87 of asking for marchable bass drums, set up in a tenor formation. I.e. benor drums. PS: custom backbar may be needed
I used to work for Scholastic Books, Inc. I am a drummer. What a disappointment this book is. Usually, we would have many ppl contributing to the writing, one editor, and one fact checker. Btw, did you catch them saying Pink Floyd's _Money_ was in FIVE?!🤣🤣 Also, is that Chad Wackerman on the cover???
Hell, they could have just included a small piece of cut up mousepad and that would have been a better practice surface XD. Sending an uncommon size drumhead is just hilariously befuddling.

Why didnt they just throw in an actual practice pad instead of an actually useless 8 inch drum head? How did they even find those? Did some company have a bunch of weird 8 inch heads sitting in a warehouse? What laziness
I'm not making excuses for this product, but if it's from Scholastics, then this was aimed for little kids, probably from the ages of 6-10, I guess that's why the Sticks are so short. That being said, It's still a stupid product, and young kids should still take professional lessons and use proper equipment.
