I remember watching this show on WGIZone back in the day and being utterly confused yet impressed. Cool to hear more about the show's theme, background, and magnets!
I remember seeing this show for the first time, and at the end most of the performers went down to their underwear. It was absolutely insane. The music was 🔥🔥🔥
Back in 2021 when WGI had the virtual season, my winds group entered an eShowcase video since restrictions prevented us from creating an in-person show. Anyways, we quoted Planet of the Apes ("Damn you, damn you all to hell!") in the show. And we got DISQUALIFIED for it. Apparently the decision was kinda controversial as well, the decision had to go all the way to the CEO.
wth i basically did this as a skit at a talent show in 1996 lol but the theme was "you can't stop a drummer from drumming" (taking away all the instruments one by one). After all the drums were gone, I was drumming on my lap and floor with my hands, then I got tackled and pinned so i couldn't drum so I start scatting lol
Our high school band used to change into uniforms on the bus coed at the contest site! Of course, that was 40+ yrs ago. Boy have times changed regarding undies being shown, lol! By the way, we were the first champions of the Bands of America finals contest (then known as Marching Bands of America). :)
This was always our underclassmen favorite part of trips. LOL, as an adult looking back, my goodness we were some goofy azz kids, but band was 100% a great experience and influence on the rest of my life (though I don't really play anymore).
A couple of years ago, I was in Show Choir, and we had just finished a show. Our director told us to wait in the room, after 15 minutes, we all just decided to change out of our costumes into our casuals just co-ed. It was one of those "What happens in this room stays in this room moment"
We would probably do the same but our Band was a bit underfunded. The drumline and sousaphones would take up 2 or 5 rows from the rear and the rest of the 40-50 people would sit 2 to 3 per bench on the bus. Changing was horrible the 1st year. We'd split the boys from the girls. Until the following year we would wear basketball shorts and a white tee under our uniforms and the girls would wear leggins or booty shorts or the volleyball shorts whatever they felt was comfortable in the uniform. If they wore those booty shorts or volleyball shorts they'd throw on some sweats or basketball shorts or simply some leggins for the awards. I miss the Marching Band Days too bad I chose to follow my pops Construction route over the Marching Band.
Is it me or did anyone else get lost of the storyline? What was the main purpose of the refrigerator and the deconstruction of the clothes? It went totally over my head. 🤷♂️
I always find it ironic that people can be offended by "underwear" that is less revealing than acceptable beach attire or even required HS sports uniforms simply because they are typically considered intimate garments not normally seen publicly displayed. It says more about the type of person who is making a morality judgement on the type of clothing displayed rather than the actual potential for indecent exposure of the person in question.
I had never marched indoor (high school didn't have the budget for a program and thus independent never caught my eye), but 2015 was my first year teching a HS line in the same local circuit as CWP. I was at the infamous first show and it was hilarious! I had a LOT of friends who I had marched with in DCI and DCA previously in that group and I was a big supporter of theirs all the way through Finals (to this day the only time I've ever been able to make it out to Dayton). Getting to see it all again was awesome, love this vid EMC!
my high school got trampolines banned from wgi back in 2014. its kinda cool knowing that u had such a weird show u got something banned. the show is called Sprung by athens drive high school winter percussion if you want to do a vid on it. its a really cool show but it mainly got banned bc there was a technicality about the marching with drums on stands lol.
Well, the concept certainly saves on uniform costs! 😅 i'm sure the summer corps members would appreciate it much more! As for the stripping down all the way to undies, I'm sure some of the members themselves really didn't go for the idea either. Not everybody likes to be an exhibitionist.
EMC!!! My band has been nominated to march in the 2024 Independence Day Parade and represent Ohio, in Washington DC!!! We are the ODCS marching band(and an entire school so we got other band related stuff as well)
Wow, amazing! I played drums in a band where we ended shows very similarly, with the other two guys leaving their guitars making noise and then taking my set apart while I played a repeating pattern on the snare.
In Dayton, at the USAF Museum, and I see that you posted a video! Had to stop to watch! 😘 See you tomorrow! I just noticed ... 8 + your custom snare: 9 snares!
This was, indeed, a very creative show artistically speaking. I enjoyed the concept of gradually dismantling the ensemble, both the instruments and the uniforms. Musically, it had all the elements of a great drumline show. I appreciate you taking time to explain the changed ending for the "deconstructed uniform". The need for limits is defined by the those parts of society that will grant artistic license as long as it does not exceed social mores. However, this was not "cancel culture" but a rather of sense and civility. Presentations for -18 audiences should present something that is acceptable for a PG-rated movie. Example: DCI tested the market in Lubbock, Texas, for a possible regional event. The corps were around the city rehearsing at the various high schools. Local residents thought these were Lubbock high school students that were "scantily clad". The number of phone calls made to the school district administration resulted in the school district telling DCI thanks but no thanks. It didn't help that there was a weird summer storm that rained out the second half of the competition that night. Being a military man yourself, you understand decorum. Certain things are acceptable. Certain things are not.
Can you do Dorman High School Show from this year, they were in A Class last year and this year moved to open but were placed in world class. And still have been leading event after event. Hopefully they keep it up in Dayton but the competition is tough.
I'm completely new to the drumline scene and wanted to know around how long did it take to get everything done from the moment you were presented with the music? I see the very difficult rhythm sections for all instruments so I'm guessing around 6-8 months of discipline, clean underwear, and hard work. Care to share your experience with it?
The girl crawling around probably hurt their score , but it’s a creative animation of the deconstructed 😌 That was an amazing presentation and stayed in step on beat and very coordinated. The cloths could of stayed on and I’ve enjoyed this.
"This show was banned from being performed in high schools" ...yet it was performed at Downington HS and Coatesville HS as a part of the MAPS season that year.
There is one other show that I know of that was banned. In highschool in the MCCGA Circuit in the Midwest, a highschool indoor from O’Fallon had a show about killing osama bin Laden. But, it was very overt and a bit gory. Needless to say after the first show they’d changed their concept.
My percussion instructor thinks he got actual home rooms banned because he spilled an energy drink on the carpet and didnt realize until he got back from performing
"I loved that part where you guys went to your underwear...I thought it added another layer to the show concept." Don't you mean, removed another layer?
i am always wondering how do bands like this pay for those instruments? I mean... those marimbas are 5-6k each or even more and overall you need about 50-100k to pay for all those instruments.
Fun concept, but FAR from being the most controversial indoor show ever. That title will FOREVER belong to Carolina Thunder. People don’t even want to talk about it. I’m not even mentioning the year.
Very cool show, but a very american thing. Violence in kids movies is fine. Carrying guns around is fine. But never dare to to expose underage people to something remotely obscene (with quite the broad definition), else you’ve got the parents protest rolling. That being said: Usually when we have people undressed in theaters as soon as they get backstage they are handed a shower coat. Although I’ve got to say, as a high scool student I would have done that too ...

LAME!!!! This is why we can't have nice things. Jack Black from School of Rock and his lecture on "the man" comes to mind.

Did the same thing for theater. You don't always have separate dressing rooms that you can get to. We're all "family" 🙂
these reaction type of videos with members that marched the show being reacted to is really cool to see! you guys have a good chemistry as well

Incredible. Great analysis too!
You met my friend Sam and Gi at the WGI world championships in Ohio they are apart of ModZ “Survivor” show
Hi eric, I suggest that you should react to the indoor percussions in the Philippines there are tons of them and they are good too
I was thinking this show looked familiar. This was my age out year for WGI, the memories.
To me, the picture on the fridge looks like Chuck Norris.
You should stay for the winds groups this year. Especially stryke wynds 🖤💜
