The Masked Marvel (1943) is a 12-chapter film serial created by Republic Pictures. Lots of great action, and miniature effects created by the Lydecker brothers.
I agree: Epic. I saw tons of Republic serials in 1960s (that time not so "vintage"...). I like a lot that mid-1940s large-brim hats and wider suits. What a style!
I heard of the MM way back as a kid; used to watch 'Cliff Hangers Theatre' almost every Saturday night right after Creature Features in Omaha (Nebraska) in the 1970s...such great memories!
The Green Hornet minus Kato! And those hats must be stuck on with superglue 😉! But seriously, I love these old serials. Never saw this one before, but I'm enjoying it!
The legendary stunt man Tom Steele used rubber tubing inside his hats during violent stunts so they'd stay on and the public wouldn't know it wasn't the actual star they saw.
Excellent serial from republic. Love the fist fights. Tom Steele was behind the mask of the masked marvel. He never got any credit and his voice was dubbed by another actor. Who? I do not know. Thanks for posting. Tom Steele died in 1990 at the age of 81. Rip Tom Steele.
The reason the hats never fall off dying the action scenes in these old serials is due to continuity issues, if a fight scene need to be edited they didn't need to worry about the hat appearing and disappearing A nod to this was made during the Indiana Jones movies, you'll notice Indy never loose his hat during a fight.
The way they kept the hats on they actually used large rubber bands and placed in the interior ribbon of the hat. That way the hats almost never fall off.
The pre-eminent stuntman, Tom Steele, originated the use of rubber tubing inside the hat. That ensured that the audience wouldn't see that a stuntman rather than the actor was doing the fighting. That's a matter of record.
Wow. Absolutely shocked at how good this really is! Loved it. Thanks for posting this fantastic action-packed classic. Would love to see Hollywood do a modern remake of this serial!
Ah the good old days when guns didn't run out of ammo. David Bacon who was one of the actors in this serial was murdered in Santa Monica California, the murder was never solved.
A few things I noticed here... 1. The MM is a dangerous man as people regularly die around him. 2. When the MM takes an right hook, not even a black eye is left on him...lol 3. @1:26:45, Mace had MM at his mercy and didn't shoot him...big mistake. 4. During fight scenes, the MM's hat never leaves his head. All in all, is was an entertaining watch and thanks for posting. Much appreciated.
For some reason this reminds me of the old DC Comics hero, The Sandman. He wore a face/gas mask, wore a suit and tie with a fedora and used a gas gun that put his enemies to sleep with sleeping gas. He fought mobsters, Nazis and shadowy organizations trying to overthrow the government in the 1940's.
@@leelarson107 Masked Marvel was 1943. DC's Sandman was 1939. DC was in full gear by then. But the MM was most likely inspired by Will Eisner's "The Spirit!" Eisner claimed that negotiations with Republic broke down & the studio make the"Masked Marvel" instead of a "Spirit" serial!
When I was in high school Chuck McCann used to show this serial on his channel 11 Sunday morning show in NYC - so much fun seeing it again. I love how the 4 investigators dress exactly the same! (And uh...is there any particular reason for one of them to be masked in the first place, except to keep us guessing until the last episode?)
Gotta be said, the serials from republic pictures are clearly better then the ones from Columbia or universal pictures, the staged fight scenes, writing, pacing (they really move), and the music all add their elements to give you your money's of excitement. Columbia serials are slow and at times boring, universal is a little better at times but republic pictures were very consistent with their best years around 1938 to 1947 in my view.
Will Eisner claimed that this was supposed to have been a "Spirit" serial but that Quality comics wanted more $$$ & more control over the script; & Republic said "Nope." "We'll just create our own version."

exciting during the second world war, these actors must have been classified 4f, so they wouldn't be drafted for the war with Japan,Germany and Italy. But they sure could fight in this picture. thanks for posting this film. ... Matt NY
Rod Cameron was actually Canadian. He attempted to join the Canadian Army, but failed the physical exam. Many actors who made films during the war were given deferments so that they could complete film projects they were working on. Moves were actually considered an essential war production product because it was a moral booster. However most actors directors and others took their deferments, completed the movie, and they entered the war. There were some examples of actors and directors who's jobs in the Army kept them state side making training and propaganda films, and as such they were able to make entertainment films at the same time.
Somehow I missed how Marvel could survive that fall from the top of that tall gasoline storage tank. No matter. I like the name Nitrolene, reminds me of Chevron's Techrolene ur Techron. I so like the old style automobiles; they have character that is missing in the one size fits all modern designs. Ah, a quality of life has vanished. Thanks for posting. Good on ya mate.
Or as Bugs Bunny once said, "you know how it is with these "A" cards;" it wasn't until I learned about WW2 rationing that I knew what Bugs meant. (Took me a lot longer to find out who Petrillo was!)
Just like the Western serials: all the men wore hats with enormous brims, and yet a hat never came off no matter how rough the fight action got. Not to mention, men or women, no one had a hair out of place...EVER. But don't get me wrong, I love these serials. I try to imagine myself in this time when there was no tv.
Unfortunately sometimes youtube puts ads in without my knowledge. I try to only put ads between episodes. I'll try to get to this serial in the next few days and organize the ads better.

I do love this serial. The miniature sets and explosions are truly remarkable. The fight sequences are remarkable for the wrong reasons. Never seen so many men capable of being hit square in the face with knuckle sandwich after knuckle sandwich and never even flinch, much less get a scratch or a blemish. They obviously couldn't afford to have the Lydecker Brothers AND a good make-up man. The latter had to go.

Fight scenes are speeded up 50 %.Nobodies that energetic.
The must-have had a great furniture budget for this, never have I seen so many props destroyed.
All soft wood, all cheap wood, all cut and unglued to last just long enough to hit the stuntman or the wall.
I’ve read in the past that hats stayed on to protect the actors head.
Holding a Gun on anyone means nothing in these old serial films. You must always have a fistfight.

That's to make the editing easier - nobody has to worry whether the guy's hat was on or off in any particular shot!
I read they adapted a tire inner tube to fit the inside of the hat. Just inflate for a tight fit. Just like an inflatable sneaker today.
