Terrific Serial from Republic pictures. I really like the outstanding score by Alberto Colombo! Yes the Lightning was the inspiration for Darth Vader.

To think these same Marines would be engaged in an epic struggle with the Japanese across the Pacific in a few years time.

It's amazing how roomy submarines were back then!

In real life, subs barely had space for anything. Most of the crews, especially on the German side, were chosen for their average height and weight; a tall man would have been too big. Sleeping arrangements were always miserable.

Just yesterday I saw a Roy Rogers movie from this same era and thought that the opening credits looked so cool. I had never seen that device used before...apparently Republic Pictures used it fairly often in the late 30s?
Is it just me or do all the female leads in these 30s movies look the same? Not just the hair styles, but brunettes seem to dominate the "B" movies, while blondes were "reserved" for top line movies

The perspective, thesis, and narrative might not always be "right" or "perfect".....but I do give credit to "Hollywood" (the screen writers, playwrights, novelists) a modicum of credit for trying to capture a semblance of talking/filming history of the events as they unfold. Many thanks for another great serial!

There is no "right" or "perfect", this is escapist propaganda from a dream factory, grab your willing suspension of disbelief, your popcorn & sit down, shaddup & enjoy the ride while it lasts!😊
