Six months later and I can't figure how I missed this video. But I did and caught it this morning. When it comes to "Now and Then", I'm in the same boat as most of your viewers, and you, of course. It's unfortunately a day late and a dollar short. It just doesn't ring the same and Paul's shakey voice doesn't fit right. With me, at least. But I applauded the effort and have the old demos in bootlegs if I really need to hear the song. Great work. I saw how your introduction is the same as mine. My first was Let It Be, and then it was the Blue Album, both in the Summer of 1980.
I’m so glad you found this video! Hardly anyone has watched it and it’s making me wonder if there’s some problem with the algorithm? Especially for a Beatles video. Anyway, I’m glad you found it and thank you for the kind words. I can tell we are both on the same page.thanks for watching!
@@juliosanchez95You’re absolutely correct. I should have been more specific. They finished the lyrics in the sections they sang and added some chords to shape the bridge and solo section. When I listen I always feel Paul and George’s influence on the song. Thanks for the comment and for watching!
I have been a Beatles fan since I saw them on The Ed Sullivan Show. I have no doubt that all three of John's songs were far from finished, and weren't to John's satisfaction. It's cool that they tried to finish them, but they just don't have the Beatles magic. One of the biggest regrets of my life is never having seen the Beatles live, because I was too young. I did however, get to see McCartney and Wings in Boston in the 70's, and it was an amazing show. Every time he played a Beatles song all I could think was, "This is as close as I will ever get to seeing the Beatles live". I savored every second.
I felt the same! I think Paul wanted to do it. After the Peter Jackson's Get Back project, it was the «right» timing I guess. I touched me to hear John but it just don't sound like a Beatles song but it sounds like a marketing affair.

@@josephblue4135I absolutely love the Abbey Road remix. I love all the remixed albums with the exception of the red and blue albums. They took some liberties on some of songs. Thanks for watching!
Agreed that this really doesn't have as much Beatley sound or input as the other two songs, and I would have been more accepting of this as a John Lennon track that was "polished off by friends." Unfortunately, this was a bit of unfinished business nagging at Paul, and he just couldn't let it rest. As a result, they put out a spectacular production, but as a "Beatles" track, it's gimmicky in a way that Free As A Bird and Real Love weren't. The only way I would have accepted this as a Beatles release is if they had done the MAL software treatment on Free As A Bird and Real Love to finally make John's voice sound pure and up front, and released all three songs as an EP. That way we would have gotten something extra and worthwhile along with the new song. But sticking it on the Blue album was cynical marketing, and degrading of the legacy --- something Apple has usually been more careful about. I resented the money-grab aspect. Two other minor gripes -- Ringo's drumming sounds bog standard and doesn't have his usual flair, as the other two tracks do... And couldn't they have done up some nice artwork that didn't look like a Photoshop placeholder?
I totally agree with your assessment. I can tell we both think exactly the same on this issue. But in the grand scheme of life, I doesn’t really matter; it’s just important to people like yourself and me who love their music so much. Music has become so awful over the last 20 years that I feel like the Beatles legacy should be protected and cherished and honored. It seems to me that the people in charge of the Beatles brand “Apple core” are being taken over by younger people who don’t understand how important this music is. The good thing is that the Beatles music will outlive all of them and all of us. It has a magic that has solidified its position in the history of mankind. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for your comments! I agree with you about George Harrison. He was such an honest and authentic person. I admire John Lennon for the same reason. I also think it’s why both George and John had such a hard time with the overwhelming fame and myth of the Beatles. Paul and Ringo just took it all in stride; but George and John both seemed shell shocked by the burden of being in the most famous and influential band in history. I thinks that’s why John dropped out of music for 5 years and George became a hermit in his final years. They were such sensitive people and I think the unfathomable fame of being in The Beatles was difficult for them to process and recover from. Anyway thank you for the great comments!
Thank you that means a lot to me. There’s no other band or artist that’s more important to me than the Beatles. I know I’m not alone! right now I’m working on another episode about Abbey Road. I’ve listened to that album thousands of times and it’s still knocks me out. Stay tuned!
This is the best version I found of Now and Then. I cried the first time I heard it and still get goosebumps today. The pre chorus is so Lennon that it hurts, and the chorus is so McCartney that it hurts even more... ruclips.net/video/d9kMgTf-jt8/видео.html
Absolutely! The Beatles records sound different than any other music that was coming out at the time; or anything that has come out sense. The recording engineers that worked on those tracks were phenomenal and the production and mixing is just otherworldly. Put on a track like hard days night or help or any other track, and their music sounds completely different than any other artist. The combination of their brilliance with George Martin, producing in the incredible EMI recording engineers made music that will last for centuries.
I am not a fan of "Free as a Bird" and only think "Now and Then" is ok. I do like Real Love though. I wonder if Now and Then could have been better had George been still alive and the three had done more work on it? Anyway, hope you keep making your videos about our fav band.
I feel the same as you. I never listen to Free As a Bird; but I really love Real Love. First of all I love the song (one of my fave post Beatles Lennon songs) and I love what they added to the song. George’s guitar parts are killer and the backing vocals are gorgeous. It became a very Beatley track in the end. It also wasn’t as influenced by Jeff Lynne’s typical production style (which I do not like at all). The “new” Beatles song is not legitimate as far as I’m concerned. I don’t even include it in my Beatles library. Like I said in the video it’s totally disingenuous to say it’s a Beatles track. I wish Paul and Ringo had simply released it as a special tribute to John and left it at that. But in the grand scheme of life it’s not that big a deal. I’m glad younger people got to experience the excitement of one last “new” Beatles song. But I have to admit I’ve never been disappointed with anything they’ve done as part of the official Beatles cannon until “Now and Then”. Unfortunately I see it as a sign of things to come. Paul and Ringo are very old men now and I assume they’re not as concerned about protecting the legacy as they once were. Now The Beatles are in the hands of their kids; who have a more modern understanding of their dad’s legacy. Thanks again for your great comments!
@@JonBlackstone I hate to say it but I feel like some of the big artists are just chasing as much money as they can now. I do like what Paul has done with solo album anniversary releases and the books have been great.
Absolutely not! The thought of it makes me ill. One of the main appeals of that movie besides, it’s brilliance is the fact that it’s shot in stunning, beautiful, black and white film stock. I love black and white films. The work and craftsmanship it took to make black-and-white films look beautiful is immeasurable. The lighting technicians that worked on those black-and-white films were masters of their art.
That’s a conversation I would love to have with you. Because I feel that there was something otherworldly involved in in them coming to the world. Their music has a magic that impossible to describe.

I consider myself a Beatles musicologist of sorts and I totally respect and admire your ongoing work and passion for all things Beatle. BUT I think you have gone way out of line, overboard, in expressing your opinion about Now and Then. You set up your viewers to see you as qualified to analyze and make a statement about the song. Fine. But then you proceed to repeatedly hammer your negative point of view, over and over and over again. That was extreme, unnecessary and disrespectful. I personally love the song, melody and lyrics. I am a 70 year old still fulltime musician and I play and sing Here Comes the Sun a dozen times a week. I don't trash it because John isn't part of that recording. Same goes with the Ballad of John and Yoko with only John and Paul. Now and Then was gifted to the remaining Beatles by John's estate, his wife Yoko. Show some respect. You, in the end, made this about you without regard for others. Shame on you.
