Good video Steve. I just got a 7300 and I have all kinds of SM58s and an 57as well as some condenser mikes. I will probably do something like this, as it also go's hand in hand with setting up a PTT to trigger my FL21000B power amp.
Don’t “need” the transformer and being 1:1 it won’t alter voltage gain. The transformer may help avoid RF coupling into the audio chain. You should also consider a DC blocking capacitor as the radio is designed to supply bias for the electret mic. It may not hurt anything but I have always used a cap on my Icom cabling
Hi. Nice demonstration video. I am using Audio Technica AT2005USB. USB dynamic mic, connected to RAspberry Pi 3B+ via USB cable. I stream the mic's audio to the rig via USB cable. . With FFmpeg's command line tool, I able to add audio effects such as audio compression . Forr PTT, I vreated simple scrip, wher I onlu need to hit space bar to toggle the PTT. BTW, we can use the TX button to toggle the TX mode, if we want to rant for many minutes.. :) Thank you and good luck. 73
I had a similar circumstance from 25+ years ago with a new ICOM 736. It came with the IC-HM-36 hand mic. I went through a Field Day contest screaming into that mic and making very few contacts so I thought I needed to make a change. I had a Kenwood MC-60A, a dynamic mic, left over from selling a Kenwood HF rig and decided to wire it to the Icom. In that day and time you had to trust🤔 the people you normally talk to on HF with about their opinion of your audio. I immediately started getting "GREAT AUDIO" reports. Between then and now, I had basically gotten completely out of ham radio for nearly 20 years and in 2018, dove back in. Bought a used Icom 736 and mated it to a new MC-60A again. I have to wonder if it would require 100% gain on a 7300. Different radio I know, but I run mine at about 70%. Still getting those "Great Audio" Reports. Great video. Thanks and 73s, KX5E.

I have never heard a bad sounding Heil. Perhaps I could throw some money at this and perform real on-air tests with a range of mics. I don't doubt the Heil would be fantastic but I wonder just how close I could get with other (budget) mics; my experiences with Shure and AKG have not been positive, despite them working well for non-radio use. @@Bernard-John Yes, but the Rode M3 is a condensor mic. They sound great if you want ambiance (e.g. choirs, acoustic instruments etc.), but for Ham radio I prefer a dynamic mic because of it's proximity effect and the stronger rejection of unwanted sound, including the ambiance of the room you are in.

I don't understand how some would say that the ICOM IC7300 doesn't work with a Dynamic mic. I just got my Heil Pr[ 7 headset for my IC7300. It has a Dynamic mic! I have never had anyone say that it doesn't work with the IC7300!!
N6AJH. I A 600 ohm 1:1 mic transformer will give you the same voltage on the secondary as the primary. I am doing the same thing but using a 1:2 to get a 3db boost as you see the voltage output of the dynamic is lower output than an electret mic. I hope this helps.
Steve may i ask you a question. If you had a mic using its own phantom power unit, would that help in reducing how the mic gain on the radio was set to? best wishes Dave M6ENS
That's a good question. I think mics that use phantom power (for example condensers) do typically have higher output, so *may* be a better match. However, at that point you're likely using an external mic pre-amp, which really negates the issue anyway.

I find the stock mic sounds the best.

The 1:1 transformer will not increase the gain from the mic, It only isolates it to help eliminate hum.
The dynamic Icom SM-50 microphone with built-in preamp sounds great with the IC-7300.

Try running those Mics thru a “Studio V3” preamp.

I suppose VOX will not work correctly with a dynamic mic, unless you have a preamp?
I believe VOX does still work, providing the mic gain is at/near maximum. However, I've not properly tested this.
