    The tire idea is great sir, that's what I do with all my cars and it just makes things easier and makes my summer tires last around 4 years depending on how I drive, how much I drive etc.

    Totally agree, Ian. A few days ago I drove my M3 from East Lothian to Hertfordshire via a stop in Ormskirk. Left with 85%, and only needed charges in Tebay and Rugby, despite the cold and the wet. And my charges took place during food / loo stops anyway, so no extra time lost.
    Will consider crosses when my tires neeed replacing, but tbh I'm happy with summers on all but a very few days of the year.

    My WRX with winter tyres on was incredible. However as I am in England, I've not bothered since and the set I had for my S3 ended up being binned due to age over wear as they'd started cracking from being stored more than used. Up your way you could go full winters or even consider something like the incredible Michelin Cross Climate 2's. Very good reviews and Tyre Review channel is great to see comparisons 👍🏻😄

    I swear by winter tyres but only during the cold weather. Especially for a car with a lot of torque. You get a close to summer driving experience in the winter with the right tyres. It is a pain doing the swap but worth it, especially if it snows.
    Running winter tyres in hot summer weather is a great way to wear them out in just a few thousand miles. Don't be tempted to do that.
    I run winter tyres on a Jaguar XF Diesel S and my wife's S-Max.

    Living on the Canadian prairie pretty much demands everyone have winter tires. I took delivery of my 2023 MY at the end of October 2022 and imediatly ordered winter tires on dedicated wheels with sensors. In November 2022 and Spring 2023 I had Tesla Service come to the house and swap the tiresfor $80. I stored them in my garage. This fall I went to a GM dealer who swaped my tires for $40 and stored them for ~$80. Having winter tires is more for ice than snow. The ability to stop and go at an icy interestion is superior to summer or all season tires. I purchased Michelin X Ice and Snow which I am very happy with. Having 2 sets of tires will obviously extend the life of both sets of tires. If you are interested in Winter driving tips just ask!

    I seem to remember that long, long ago, back in the days of cross ply tyres, you could get winter tyres with embedded zig-zag short metal strips embedded in them. Not as effective as studs but also did n't damage the road surface. If I lived up in wonderful Scotland I think I'd go for a dual motor Tesla. Where I am a RWD should be fine.

  • @CraigLedden

    Personally I have two sets of wheels, one set for summer and one set for winter. It’s much easier to swap them over at home and by the time you’ve swapped them over a few times they’ll be cost neutral as you’re not paying a garage to swap tyres every 6 months 👍🏻
    I also don’t understand people who buy a £60k car like a Xc90 and then complain about the cost of tyres. I’ve seen loads of new(ish) bmw 5 series with budget ditch finders. People need to learn to live within their means instead of buying cars based on their outward image.

    We're taking delivery of our Model Y in just over a week and your content has been amazing in showing the every day reality of EV driving, really appreciate the time you put into your channel.
    I currently drive a hybrid Rav4 and its maximum range is far further than that of my bladder, stomach and general fatigue levels. I frequently drive 300+ miles to visit elderly parents and naturally stop on the way down. I've been as guilty as anyone of looking at EV range and seeing it as a limiting factor, before realising, again through content like yours, that I just need to think differently. The problem isn't EV range, it's my ICE driving experience and mentality.
    Then the only real difference between my ICE hybrid and upcoming EV is when I stop in the Tesla, I plug it in. In effect it's more efficient than 'refuelling' because it's doing that while I'm off getting food and using the bathroom.
    Range anxiety has been replaced with confidence and a different mindset on charging.

    • @justgetatesla
      @justgetatesla  9 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the nice feedback. The thing that people find hard to grasp is that most of the time the car charges whilst you sleep. Most cars spend most of their lives parked. Imagine being able to refuel them during that time… 🤔😉

      @djtaylorutube 9 месяцев назад

      You're going to have a blast! Ours was 1 year old last week, had it's "birthday" on a short road trip via France, Belgium and Netherlands.
      The comment about convenience and mindset is absolutely spot on and although I don't disagree that we have to do things differently, there's only one reason why ICE cars have the range they do and that's because refuelling them is inconvenient. Hard to get that point across when the belief is that "it only takes 3 minutes to fill up". Just about every EV owner has come from ICE and knows the real experience and the infrastructure is there, developed over 100 years but if I want to go to Costco near me for the cheapest fuel, that's 12 minutes each way and a 30 minute queue.
      In that same time, I would be very close to the same time it took me to charge on a trip from Calais to Switzerland and there, I got to eat while the car charged, not just drive solely for the purpose of fuel.
      After two long trips in a Tesla, range anxiety will be gone, confidence will be high.

    Ive put Michelin Cross Climate2 all season tyres on my car after i came off the road a year ago. Ive never had an issue since and not gotten stuck in icy snow weather. Snow breaking is massively improved too and good control. Dont think i’ll buy another type of tyre again. I drive up and down the country +25k a year so wanted tyres that can handle anything. Ive put about 35k miles on them already, probably another 10-15k before they’ll need switching for a new set.
    Pals have said how they get X more miles from their tyres…. Bla bla bla but im more concerned about safety in all weather conditions than number of miles from the set. The extra for the tyres is little in comparison to a new bumper, scratch repair or getting towed.
    Loved the comments re merge in turn, use the space thats available and be considerate but these days you get road warriors blocking both lanes causing more traffic.

      I live in just south of British Columbia in Washington State, so a similar climate to Scotland in terms of winter driving. But I also ski in the mountains that get plentiful snow all winter long, so I have a greater need for winter tires. In my 45 years of winter driving, I've found most people think too much in terms of amount or aggressiveness of tread for winter driving and don't understand the benefits of winter rubber compound. Winter tires work so well when things get frozen or have snow on them because of their winter rubber compound primarily, not because their tread pattern is so much more suitable (although it is). On roads with snow and ice, I will take a worn winter tire with shallow tread depth over a brand new all-season tire all winter long.
      The Pirelli Sottozero II or III tires are excellent for your use case because they still drive very nicely on cold, bare wet pavement. I absolutely hate winter tires that have a loud wooden feel on bare pavement and/or a squirmy feeling when cornering. The Pirelli drive like a proper tire, even when not on snow and ice. So well in fact, I have to force myself to take them off when the threat of snow and ice is gone, in order to preserve their life.
      There are winter tires that are better for deep, standing water (big puddles) that form during downpours, but as long as you reduce speed for standing water the Pirelli are brilliant winter tires. I think I prefer the Sottozero II's by a small margin over the III's. They seem a little smoother and more civilized when not in snow and ice. They have a small but measurable impact on range, less than most winter tires that have a more aggressive tread pattern. They cost a lot, but how much is your life worth?

    It's not just the Tesla charging hardware, it's also the management network behind it, and the follow up engineer visits to maintain and fix. This is something clearly lacking in other CPOs when you see them responding to tweets about duff chargers saying things like "what unit was it" and so forth because Id expect if I said, for example, "I used Acme Charger Network at Reading West services at 1pm today and 6 out of 7 units weren't working" or " the credit card readers weren't working" that they'd know that already and would say something like "oh yes we know engineer on way" rather than ask again "exactly what time? What units?" " we'll get back to you". (and they never do)

The only problem I have ever encountered was other people not being able to drive in the conditions. Winter tyres would not have helped me at all. I have driven in the north of Scotland and the Alpes in winter and only twice needed to put chains on as they were required in France.

      So a couple of weeks say you fill up once a month doing between 500-1000 miles the same as me I average about 250 miles a working week with various different journeys on the weekend up to another 250. I never go to a petrol station or supercharger. My car is ready every morning for work as I have charged at home, in this weather it is great because the interior is warm and screen cleaned as it prepares for my journey on a schedule. It also costs me about £5 a week to charge overnight at most as I use a cheap overnight tariff. So I don't queue anywhere, I dont spend time warming or cooling the car as driving is relaxing. Is it perfect no, but for most average motorists doing average mileage it is ideal. The costs to purchase and charging infrastructure need to be better but as I drive a Tesla its not as bad as it could be. We do it much better. We go through a drive-through, get something to eat and eat while we charge. No stink of gas in our hands, or fumes all around us, and no waiting at all since by the time we finish eating, our EV is all charged up. And perhaps best of all, no change of our credit info being skimmed since we don't need to use it at a Supercharger, nor need to go inside and wait in line/queue to pay with cash.
      And America is larger than even your Australia, and we often drive 4 or even 5 hours straight before needing to charge. So this impression you none EV drivers seem to have is partly to blame on RUclips channels like this one, which mention the distance but almost never the fact that it took them several hours before needing to stop for the next charge. So it gives the false impression that they are charging every other hour.
