I forgot to mention how much it cost! £56.18 for the neuter and I’ve just had to pay for medication since. This price can really vary and be a lot more depending on where you live 😅
how do u keep a rat fr chewing at those stiches? cuz rats love to groom and chew that would freak me out thank god i have never ever had my males turn on each other and ive had pet rats for for 8 years and never ever had issues with males or females
Thanks for not just showing the neuter, but also that it can sometimes have a complication. It's just the reality of it. I hope Crumble is doing better very soon!
Bless him, it’s for his own good! One of my female rats went in for a mammary tumour removal surgery around the same time as Crumble had his surgery so I’ve been experiencing the fun of rat surgeries too! Hope he’ll feel better and the abscesses go away soon 💜
Thank you for this video ! My boyfriend and I are considering neutering one of our male rats since he's been significantly aggressive to our two newest boys. We're still early on in introducing them, but the level of aggression he's displaying towards them is making me think neutering may be the only option. Glad to know what to expect if that's the route we end up having to take
I'm glad the surgery went well! I've had a bad experience in the past with neutering rats; I took two siblings in to get fixed because of hormonal aggression but one of them didn't end up making it through the surgery and it was absolutely devastating. The other sibling recovered well but experienced a bit of depression and the cage wasn't the same afterwards :(
I am considering getting one of my rats neutered because of aggression towards his cage mates (and more recently me just a little) but I'm worried about all the risks. If you don't mind sharing do you think in the end it was worth the risks and led to a healthy and happy rat. I just want my rat to be able to have companions in the future.
i buckle my girls in too and i never even thought about them chewing the seat belt, good thing they didn’t ! 😂 prayers for a nice and easy healing process 💓
Perfect timing! I got 3 new baby girls and turns out that one of the 'girls' is actually a little boy! We‘ve been spending tons of time together so he doesn‘t get lonely, it hurts me having to separate him from his sisters but we don‘t want any accidents to happen lol
Francesca Definitely keep an eye on those baby girls for any sign of pregnancy! They start SUPER young, and if there is even a slight chance one (or both) of the females went into heat while the boy was with them, there may be little ratty buns in their ovens...
Can you do a video on what you feed your mice like there everyday food and how much? Also what you give them for treats? I think that will be helpful for people planing on getting mice like me.
16:58, aw!! The way he clutches on to that spoon, adorable! Hope he heals better and can’t wait until Humbug and Crumble get introduced to the babies!!
Neutering my male has been one of my best decisions I have ever made. He was human aggressive, and I couldn't touch him at all without getting seriously injured. I am covered in scars from him. From the moment he came out of surgery I was able to pet him. I haven't been able to do that in months. Its been a little over a week and he is doing amazing! He loves his medicine mixed with banana. He hasn't really tried to bite me since! It's been an amazing transformation.
Ur channel is amazing! You present well and are so educational, especially how you support poor little mice and rats that deserve way better than they get
thanks so much for real videos like this! doing as much research as i can before i bring my rescues home so it really helps knowing what kinds of things i could expect!
Watching this a year later, cause my boy Cheese had to get neutered yesterday. I`m quite surprised about the way Crumble was neutered, my vet made a very small incision at the back end of Cheeses testes and neutered him that way. Also he was sent home with antibiotics as a preventative measure. It`s really interesting to see how different this procedure is approached by different vets. Just wanted to share my experience so far, as I hope it's interesting or helpful to someone else.
I’m sorry, I just can’t take this video seriously. Crumbles face is so funny 😂 I’m glad that everything’s going well. Hope that abscess goes down soon.
Thank you for sharing this process with us! The education you provide is so valuable. Hoping for the speediest of recoveries for Crumble, he's such a sweet boy. Also, I played 1:37 over and over at least 10 times, what a goof he is!
Helpful video 😊 three of my boys got neutered last year, they were all great, though one developed a huge cyst whilst healing. Nothing some antibiotics and minor draining couldn’t sort. Love your boyos 💓
Thanks Emi! Great Video! (Also, Happy Canada Day!!) Really great info in this video...and great tips. I realise i need to get a Hospital cage sorted, before I actually need one. One quick Tip: For those Antibiotic Tablets, that tab was made to be split by hand into two, then it will be easier to make into a quarter, as you can split it vertically to account for variation in thickness.
I'm so glad for your videos! I have started fostering rats for my local shelter and I love them. I have a group of 3 baby boys and they're very sweet and cuddly.
You're so unlucky with those abscesses! My ruby was spayed a few weeks ago...and she had to be vet wrapped for a week because she pulled her stitches and glue...despite being medicated, it was awful.
Thanks for posting this! I thought neutering rats was a lot more complicated because of their size and that was a concern for me because I like to make sure my pets aren’t experiencing distress related to hormones... Very handy that they can take Metacam! I always have a bottle of that to hand for my bunnies ☺️
Had one of my does in for a mammary tumour removal on Tuesday, she ripped the stitches out that evening (despite metacam), back in surgery on Wednesday, and so far the stitches have stayed! Back for a check up on Saturday 😅 we’re at around £400 now. A big reminder that rats aren’t ‘cheap’ pets to purchase on a whim!! She’s more than worth it though! 💕
I have had both my boys neutered (actually for practical reasons, I wanted to let them free in the house and I wouldn't have done it if they were peeing everywhere). The cut was much lower and it was closed with glue. It worked quite well. If somebody has questions I'm happy to answer =)
my rat went in to be neutered yesterday morning with his brother and unfortunately he didnt make it, his brother is recovering well so far and is moving around a lot and eating/drinking lots of water but its just heartbreaking that we lost little victor
I recently got one of my males nurtured and your video helped so much! The only thing is wasn't eating his hard pellet food so the vet told me to add water to it to soften it and he is now eating ☺️ he hasn't touched his incision and he takes his meds very well (thank goodness 😅)
Thank you!!! My rat has to gets neutered and I’m so nervous! I still have to wait another month because he is only 6 weeks old but I’m worried he’s going to get depressed without my female rat. I feel so nervous I don’t want him to have any complications so I’ve been doing an enormous amount of research
my 3 boys all got an abscess when they got neutered :( they all got put on anti biotics, 1 of them cleared up, another had to have a serious surgery as the lump was internal, and sadly my other boy also needed surgery :( very long and expensive so I feel your pain! xx
Cue bad joke. Anyone else have “He’s Got Big Ball” by ACDC song stuck in their head? But instead of “we got the biggest balls!”, it’s “he’s got no balls at all!”. Lol.
I have seen some rats need to be kept alone for about 6-8 weeks then it’s like they do fine. For some reason some get extra grumpy that late after surgery. So don’t despair if it takes longer and don’t give up if 2 weeks isn’t long enough!

Thank you for this it was very helpful I will be getting 2 male rats very soon and I am planning on neutering them but I am changing my mind a bit because now I’m just gonna see how they act
One of my rats is so sweet and a chonker (not fat just big)and the other one is tiny and no matter how much I try with every trick in the book and she still nips if you try to let them...
sorry to ask an unrelated question but my little girl charmy had an infected foot (back right), the vet gave us some medication and the infection cleared up however she keeps chewing the area now and making it bleed! The vet extended the medication and she’s been on medication for 4 weeks now but she still keeps chewing it, I’m so worried about her as it seems to be making her really upset and she’s not climbing anymore :( do you have any advice to stop them chewing their scabs? 🙏🏻 🐁💕
Is she on pain medication? If it’s irritating or hurting her and then she’s chewing it and making it worse it’s a vicious cycle, other than than I’m not sure what to suggest to stop the behaviour ☹️
@@Emiology hey thanks for getting back to me! She’s on metacam and I did mention to the vet if we should up the dosage but now she also has an eye infection (inside her eye) so she’s on metacam still but now some anti infection medicine too, the vet says she doesn’t want to up the metacam just because she’s been on it for so long - i feel so sorry for her 😔! But thank you for the malt paste tips from your videos she eats up all of her medicines! 🥰
Hi Emi, do you think neutering rats could prevent certain types of cancer in male rats? More specifically I've heard the risk for pituitary cancer is lower for neutered rats, do you know if this is true?
Hi, I’ve had the unfortunate experience of having a male rat with pituitary cancer. Neutering a male rat can obviously help with testicular cancer, but in males it doesn’t seem to help lessen pituitary cancer incidence. Because pituitary tumors are estrogen dependent, they can be less likely in spayed female rats, though, as well as mammary and ovarian tumors.
@@LB-ge8ih thank you so much for your answer! It's a pity it won't work, I would have seriously considered it. I've also had rats (2 out of the 9 rats I've had) with pituitary cancer and it was awful to see the rapid decline in the health of my rats.
Rojo Rojo I’m so sorry about your ratties! Yes, it is heartbreaking, and there is so little that can be done at that point... Everyone has advice on how to handle it, but my vet (a small animal specialist) was pretty honest: she said most “treatments” just allow us (the owners) more time with the rat, but don’t necessarily give the rat a better quality of life. I always ask vets what they would do if it was their pet, and she told me (gently) that my sweet boy was already gone (I knew that from his behavior, his brain was affected and he was confused, agitated and spastic), and the kindest thing to do was have him euthanized. It still hurts horribly, but I would rather personally go through the pain of losing my baby than have my baby live in pain...
I had made an appointment to get one of my ratties neutered next week; after seeing this, I am having second thoughts. x'D Larian is the sweetest noodle, he's a saint with the other ratties, absolutely zero aggression, very calm. My reason to neuter him? I'm allergic to rats, and apparently neutering them helps alleviate some of the allergens. But it's not like I couldn't live two to three more years dripping snot and tears and having red, puffy lacerations on my body from rattie nails, and my eyes swollen to the point of looking dead...
I definitely wouldn’t put him through it for that reason and I’ve not heard about any benefits, is it the pee you’re allergic to? And have you tried getting prescribed stronger allergy medication?
@@Emiology From what I've been told, other than the pee, it's the rusty colored oils that cause the allergies - and he in particular secretes a lot of those, despite feeding all of my rats the same, balanced diet. For a couple months, I tried to reduce the amount of proteins they consume, but saw no improvement. My other rats, while they still give me allergic reactions, are nowhere as bad as it is with Larian. I haven't entertained the thought of rehoming him, as he's already been through two previous owners in his 9 months of life. The vet said neutering would help. She's supposedly one of the best exotic/rodent vets in my country, so I would hope she wasn't just saying that so she could earn a penny on a completely unnecessary surgery... but who knows. And since I am basically allergic to life, I've grown immune to most meds I was prescribed. Others, for what little relief they give me, are not worth it, as they make me so sluggish I can't do anything that requires me to be at the very least awake, heh.
I’m so glad Crumble finally got to get neutered! I hope this helps his aggression and I’m so sorry for all the complications, that’s frustrating. Quick question, I noticed in the background Twix and Wispa were fighting and squeaking. How can you differentiate between that sort of play fighting and Crumble and humbug’s more serious fighting? My 6 month old boys have been fighting quite a bit but no blood has been drawn. But they just do it so often, that worries me a little. How can I tell the difference between play fighting and real fighting?
Sarah Gayle - I guess body language. If you see two dogs play fighting vs real fighting, you can easily tell the difference. I realize it’s different with rats, and a little more difficult to tell. An aggressive fight might involve more stalking like behavior, like stalking your prey. One rat might be fleeing in terror, genuinely trying to get away, but if they’re playing, their bodies won’t be so tense, and they’ll be coming back for more, basically.
Playfighting tends to be bouncy - meaning they'll probably jump around and popcorn to show it's playful. The general rule with rats is no blood no foul. If the rat pops right back up and goes for more after being pinned, don't worry about it.
I'm so happy that he's recovering pretty well! Do you know as an estimate how much money I'll need to put aside for rats minus the cage? I'm planning to get them in October.
You want loads of toys so you have to work out how mucj all those will cost you eant to set aside money for vet bills you also want to know you have enough money for food and bedding
Well rats are around £20 for two, but food and bedding could be £20 to last 2-3 months. Toys, hammocks, hideouts , ropes and stuff depends on what you pay but I recommend amazon which can be £30-40 if you’re giving them an active cage, which is recommended!!
This isn't necessarily about the money aspect but if you get anything from the pet store I would recommend washing it or freezing it for a few hours to a day before giving it to them. I do it because items from pet stores can carry parasites and sickness which no one wants to deal with especially your little ratties!
Hi I have 4 female rats but one is constantly fighting the others she hasn’t drawn blood and I think it is just dominance but would it stop it or help stop it to spay her?
I really want rats, but I know I can't really afford them 😅 I also would want a male group of mice, but they can be territorial :/ I know that if they are brothers or something they could be kept together but if they would start fighting..
I just my three boys, but two of the three are very shy and aren’t coming out of their tunnel, should I be worried or not? One of them is super confident, and loves coming out. I’m just wondering if I should be worried, or if it is just them settling in?😊
They need at least 48 hours to get used to new places and some even take a week or more it rlly just depends if it gets too long you might want to ask someone more experienced but i wouldnt worry about it
I’m thinking about taking my mouse in to be neutered because he doesn’t even have friends and yet shows signs of aggression (tail flicking, etc. he also had a torn ear when I adopted him) I can’t give him female friends for obvious reasons but I also can’t give him male friends if he’s going to fight or be stressed out..😬
I forgot to mention how much it cost! £56.18 for the neuter and I’ve just had to pay for medication since. This price can really vary and be a lot more depending on where you live 😅
♥️
i ment can it be here oof xd

I had made an appointment to get one of my ratties neutered next week; after seeing this, I am having second thoughts. x'D
Larian is the sweetest noodle, he's a saint with the other ratties, absolutely zero aggression, very calm.
Crumble is cute
I want a pet mice / rat but my mom's like NOPE NO RODENTS
I'm gonna get My rats neutered in the next week or so, so this was very helpful and convenient.
I’m just wondering if I should be worried, or if it is just them settling in?😊
They need at least 48 hours to get used to new places and some even take a week or more it rlly just depends if it gets too long you might want to ask someone more experienced but i wouldnt worry about it
I love all your info. What is malt paste?
I’m thinking about taking my mouse in to be neutered because he doesn’t even have friends and yet shows signs of aggression (tail flicking, etc. he also had a torn ear when I adopted him)
I can’t give him female friends for obvious reasons but I also can’t give him male friends if he’s going to fight or be stressed out..😬
