Welcome back to Karn Ultra, everybody! Been musing on this one for months now and am glad to have a channel to put it on! If ya' liked it, please like the video! This channel is growing already and YOU'RE a key part of that!
Nintendo separating and having their own presentation used to be a really special thing that symbolized how they were separate from the rest of the industry, now everyone is copying them thinking they can mimic the success without understanding the point.
I feel so bad for people who try and defend all these newer showcases because they clearly didn't get to experience things like Playstation's E3 2016 showcase, that shit was legendary.
Nintendo has been doing these Directs for over a decade now & it feels like no one has been able to copy them well enough that they should do their own thing. Ubisoft is the worst because they use pop music that gets content creators copyright flagged. Even if they use the "streamer friendly" version, people are still getting flagged. They're killing their own hype because no one wants to risk livestreaming their presentations.
The only one of these presentations that ever lands well for me are indeed the Nintendo directs, for a lot of the reasons you stated. Honestly it’s also that Nintendo is one of the only companies that doesn’t take 17 business years to make new games in like every franchise, it’s kinda sad. PS5 and Xbox games just take so long to come out that they can’t really market it without having to wait forever after the announcement
karn is so real for this one, there are so many companies that seemed to know the value of when to release information but it maybe seems like a lot of them were really just benefiting from the limitations of the time. They're so caught up in the success of the instant access, they completely forgot the lessons of delaying gratification to a hungry audience.
I definitely agree with you, mate. Game companies really need to stop announcing things early & they need to pace their announcements better in their directs. Concord is a prime example of how not to announce your game. Show off some gameplay with some in-universe narration & intermix some dev interviews. Save the short film for later. While I don't think it would've saved the game, there might've been less vitriol towards it.
I will always hate it when they reveal a game that wont come out for like 5 more years. Like the hype always dies out especially when they dont update us about said game in those 5 years. JUST WAIT TILL ITS (almost) FINISHED TO RELEASE A TRAILER!!!!
We literally had an entire year where Nintendo themselves weren’t having any Directs because there wasn’t much to show. We don’t need these events every time. Save it for the big stuff. It’s why the “one more thing” works so well for Nintendo.
The hype and dread of Nintendo directs is what makes them special. Personally I prefer stuff like what Square Enix and Bandai Namco do, focusing presentations on big releases.
I’m solely a Nintendo fan, and the point you made about any of these Direct style showcases only having one real interesting announcement is actually my barometer for what I like out of a Direct. For me, a Direct is great to good if it has at least one announcement that appeals to me, since I know not every game will (and my wallet is grateful to that fact). And heck, I’ve even watched Directs I didn’t come out with any new games on my list of games to get and still thought they were good for sheer variety. At worst, I’ll grumble a little I wasn’t impressed, but I won’t say a Nintendo Direct is bad since I know a lot of what they’d have would appeal to other people. I know this isn’t exactly on topic, since this was about other companies following the Nintendo formula, but… I like Nintendo and I liked this video. It was good. Also, yes, I want a new Ace Attorney. I really fell in love with the franchise when I got the trilogy on Switch. Also also, looking forward to the Yacht Club Presents that is upcoming when I write this. Hopefully we get news of the next wave of Pocket Dungeon DLC. Also also also, you have a nice narration voice. And your editing and humor was fun. Again, good video, really liked it.
You're 100% right Karn. This is the same issue with Streaming Platforms right now, they're oversaturated and too specific/niche. I randomly decided to tune into today's Playstation presents, hoping for Monster Hunter(or Digimon but I don't expect it until DigiFes at least) and another thing I noticed that's an issue with the presentation is the lack of gameplay. Sometimes Nintendo will tease a game like Smash Ultimate or Princess Peach Showtime in a Direct, but they never take up a ton of time with these cinematic teases. But the trailers in the PS presents were almost entirely cinematic with very little gameplay outside of the indie games. Even Monster Hunter Wilds had this issue and I don't recall feeling this way with any Nintendo Directs.
my 3 ways of watching all of these events: 1. watch on a voice call with friends, being able to make fun of and get excited for games together is awesome 2. just wait till its over and look at the list of games to see if there is anything interesting 3. if its a nintendo direct just watch it idc at this point nintendo is like the only triple A company still making good games very consistently even if they can be a little screwed up
Nintendo announcing the vast majority of their games less than a year before they'll release is fantastic and has helped Nintendo Directs feel more fresh. Even if a Direct doesn't have a lot of big announcements, the small announcements are more enticing because the games are literally coming out in 4-10 months. Every Nintendo Direct is exciting to me because I could end up with even just ONE game I'm really looking forward to. The June Direct isn't a replacement for E3, it's just another Nintendo Direct. They don't have to live up to expectations, they just have to show what they are ready to show.
The one thing I miss the most about E3 is the post-presentation stuff. We get a bunch of previews, interviews--HECK, behind the scenes there are people doing game pitches and making deals. We don't get that anymore, and I wish Summer Games Fest was a proper replacement, because right now it really just feels like The Game Awards but during the Summer. As a big Nintendo fan, I'd love the directs, but I equally loved the Treehouse footage that would carry out during the rest of E3. We would get so much insight from developers showing off their games and explaining their thought-processes.
Its funny too. Nintendo had to learn over the Wii U era how to really master the art of doing a Direct. You actively see their arc of improving at it if you go back and look from 2013 to now. Where as, these other companies merely saw they were successful and copied, not clueing in as to why or how. And you pretty much nail it. They either don't have enough to show, or their not presenting it the way they could be to actually interest people. Like...if Nintendo doesn't have a lot or LITERALLY nothing 1st party? They do a Direct Mini or "Partner Showcase", setting expectations accordingly. Where as Sony, Microsoft, Ubisoft, etc, could also have not that much...but still present it like they do. And yeah, even if their COULD have been hype for something like Concord...making every watcher sit through TEN MINUTES of a cutscene, "Overwatch clone" footage, and people boringly talking over it all in your 30 minute showcase was NOT the way to do it. These companies do NOT know how to present their own products in these "Direct" showcases.
the only direct thing i watch is nintendo or pokemon, even then most of the time they do it when im at work and only watch the trailers that interest me
Definitely don't need all these directs. I think that's what also killed E3, we didn't need a EA showcase to themselves, we didn't need Ubisoft having an hour showcase showing us the same thing that was shown at Xbox the day before, nor did we need a PC showcase. Idk why they just don't let Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo just host them within their own showcases like back in the day.
The crowd reaction. If you look at the best moments of E3 (Zelda, Kevin Butler, Keanu Reeves, etc.), it's always about the crowd reaction. Remove the crowd, then it stops working. We wants to see the big 3 taking jabs at each other. Sony would never have dared showing the last State of Play to a live crowd and we know why. The crowd keeps them accountable.
Wow, already over 1000 subs HELL yeah! Great video. It's awesome to see your perspective on stuff other than Digimon. I'll be vibing looking forward to Monster Hunter Content. I didn't even THINK there would be a Digimon game so this gives me some hopium. (I saw your livestream thumbnail on the other channel.)
As a person who grew up in an average to average-poor household Nope, never played a single Mario game, nor Zelda, or Sonic The first game I could afford to buy - with my own money even - was Pokemon Black 2 The only Nintendo games I've ever owned are Pokemon & Fire Emblem, and I've played a bit of Metroid Lol But yeah, fully agree on your points, you are correct on this and should in fact say it
I'd say the only ones that need it are publishers like Bandai Namco who sleep on 50 different beloved IPs for decades on end and have an obscene backlog of games that either haven't made it to modern consoles or haven't made it to the West period.
Okay to be honest though as a sonic fan i am so thankful for the sonic centrals we have been getting. Its a way we sonic fans celebrate sonics creation, and its helped us to have a date to look to when we definitely know we will get news on the games, shows that could come out, the comics etc. I do believe that you are correct that some of these directs are extremely unnecessary. Although i can't deny the fact i like having the sonic central, like i do the nintendo direct.
I found funny that the way you describe how to do a good showcase: banger, banger, new IP, Indie, banger. Is what Xbox did (if you skip CoD at the start), though you're 100% right in saying that's difficult to be excited about their games knowing that they will kill teams regardless of their success.
Honestly, I agree that there are too many of these. I loved the Nintendo Directs when they first for started, but a big part of that was for the benefit of not having to sit through boring stretches of trailers and presentations I didn't care for. I just wanted to get what I came for and keep it moving. But with everyone now doing their own Direct, we're back to endless hours of boring shit while waiting for something cool. The fact that they're all streamed also means that you can't just skip over the parts you don't care about. That all said, I do still prefer this format to E3, especially because now I have a surefire way to completely bail out on the Xbox stuff, lol.
I think you missed the point The point of a direct is to introduce you to something you wouldn’t have cared about previously and get you to think Maybe I’ll give it a shot this time It’s called marketing lmao If they only showed you things that you asked for then it would be predictable because the shit you ask for is the same shit everyone else asks for Variety and surprises are what make it interesting
@madnessarcade7447 I think you missed the point of what I meant. 😂 For starters, I absolutely count new things I didn't know about or asked for in the list of things I'm interested in. I'm not saying Directs should only include games I already know about or expect. If anything, that was actually one of the things that made E3 kind of boring to me. I don't need or want to know about the next CoD or Dragon Age-show me other stuff! Tell me about your indies! Tell me about the unconventional titles and genres I wouldn't have thought about before! When I say that I wanted more of what interests me, I absolutely meant more trailers and devs briefly talking about their games, and not the concerts and celebrities cracking bad jokes and execs busting out buzz words like in E3. I also liked that it was BRIEF. I liked getting all the news in about 20 minutes instead of several hours. Now with everyone doing these Directs and several of them being too bloated with unnecessary talking and whatnot, these Directs take more than 20 minutes. They're getting longer and longer and there are more and more of them to watch and it's not all trailers and brief dev presentations. Or if they are, they let some games take way too much real estate within the Direct than the other titles, and if you're gonna be long, at least be a bit more balanced. And so I miss the beginning of these. When there was only one Direct and it was quick and snappy. I got news from a variety of games and it was fun!
I like indies Direct. Is a great way to give a spotlight to little guys that wouldn't even have an opportunity to show up in the small space Partner/Indie Direct. And even if they were lucky enough to show on a full Nintendo (or other company) Direct, probably will get overshadow by the big hitters for the majority of viewers. Also, many events are focused on specific genres (wholesome, paper mario, 3D plataform, etc) which makes even easier to find more of stuff that you already like. I love indies and many genres of games. Have been playing more they lately than your regular AAA or others big name games, so I watch them all and try to support as many indies as possible. Single developers Direct on the other hand looks very unnecessary since they don't have that much under their umbrella to show off.
I'm also very tired of these. Not even Nintendo Direct hypes me anymore. The only announcements that hyped me in recent memory were hacks, mods and fangames about the old games I already love. But I'm a grumpy old man. I just don't care for most IPs and I don't like the idea of us needing to consume every single one of them, I hate fomo marketing strategies. And by nature of that principle, I can't care for most conferences because of the wide variety of things to show (wow so many shooters) and too many niche directs would also suck like you stated. But a yearly event that gathered everyone was beyond all that because of the social aspect, the joy to see your friends happy about something they cared. I don't want to watch a State of Play bc I don't care for 90% of what's shown there and my friends don't want to watch a Nintendo Direct for the same reason. But an universal event gathered us together.
E3 had the benefit of bundling a whole huge total of companies who might only have had a few things a piece, so the event was generally great. Companies also had the incentive to hold their biggest announcements for it because they had to fight for attention. Take that pressure away and their N-copy approach falls flat. Nintendo has a metric TON of IP under their umbrella and the Switch has been a second home for indies, meaning the swath of games available to them to announce or promote is high at any given point in time. Individual companies have no business doing their own direct (Ubisoft.) The State of Play and whatever the hell Xbox is doing is all we need. Once or twice a year in Sony's case due to the higher dev time costs compared to the 3 or so a year Nintendo manages.
Underappreciated aspect of Nintendo Direct that makes them so successful and what makes all copycats inferior is that Nintendo has a very short turnaround. They can (and regularly do) reveal a game and then release it 2 months later. That and variety and sheer amount of games they release. Except this one but they are probably saving some of them to blow their load for Switch 2. Compare that with Ubisoft that just revealed 2 year delay on Prince of Persia remake that is already 5 years behind.
"Summer game fest starts at 10 pm for me." As a New Zealander, if I want to watch a Nintendo direct, I have to stay up until 3 in the morning! *sigh * Oh well...
oml they could actually just put this all on sgf or a new e3. we could laugh at bad games, and be excited for good ones instead of getting a slew of bad games in all these company’s nintendo direct clones, like half of these aren’t worth it, ngl
My, I don't want random drops. I want a date that I can put on my calendar, take time off and watch like it's the Superbowl. I literally do not watch Summer Games Fest because: 1. Keighley is boring. 2. I know there won't be a lot of things for me. 3. It's disorganized. Give me multiple conferences or presentations. 4. I can just read everything presented in a bunch of tweets. No hype needed 5. It's announced waaaay too late. Frankly, I despise the ESA, but at least, there needs to be one celebration time for gaming during the year.
I think 1 year is the best amount of time from first trailer to release, maybe not from initial announcement though, just knowing a game is in development and actively seeing a trailer for it are completely different, people expect every new trailer to show something new so if you have 2 or even 3 years of trailers, there's only so much new stuff you can show before you're spoiling most of the game months before release. It's been 2 years since kh4 was announced and I don't think I've thought about it once since the week after the trailer came out, if KH4 was announced only the year before it came out, I probably would've replayed every game in the series in anticipation but because the game is probably still years from release I don't feel any urgency to replay the series to build hype for the next one. But I'd honestly still rather hear nothing for years and then get a few trailers the year it comes out than have dozens of trailers over many years all progressively spoiling more of the game
I think your completely right about this, i loved E3 was that partial bias due to always happening a few days before my birthday? 100 percent, is there an advantage to doing your own show? Sure but Nintendo directs and Pokémon presents always felt special because they were unique even now i rarely watch any others in fact can't remember the last time I did, I feel there too common to keep up with all of them, as for your ff7 comment i think your bang on final although massively popular is not a console seller in the way Pokémon or Zelda are or even something like halo used to be
I’d prefer a teaser then a trailer or two before release over several years of hype limbo any day of the week. I’m not that loyal. I will forget about a game if it takes too long to come out
This was an amazing video definitely agree with everything you said here that was the thing I love about E3 it was basically the one BIG showcase a year that gave everyone more insensitive to bring their all. If you don't have enough content for a showcase just DON'T DO ONE!!! Like yeah as a fan long time silence can be annoying but I'd rather they keep their head down until they have banging games to show than do a showcase filled with a bunch of garbage. Definitely subscribing ^__^ and yes STOP SPOILING YOUR OWN GAMES SQUARE!!! I'm still annoyed by how much KH 3 showed in it's trailers 😅
I think this is a non-issue when most people just watch trailers when they release individually. Also you can just not watch it the very second and comes out and watch it like a video when it’s over.
Thoroughly disagree It's a non-issue but I'm also not claiming it's a big issue and more symptomatic of an industry schism. In another industry, the huge uptick in streaming services are also a "non-issue" if you just don't use them or pirate everything but clearly are still something to discuss and advocate change in. There's clearly a big enough draw to these events, Direct-equivalents etc for them to be valid to criticize and want more from as I discussed in the video, the publishers WANT a lot of eyes funnelled on the live streams and premieres because that sudden burst of social media activity is a big reason people who DIDN'T tune in become aware of the individually released trailers
Do you know where I can buy single Digimon cards I'm looking because after Chaos cards didn't' get the last set in I thought I need to find a new place so I was wondering if you know of anywhere
The point of these presentations is to have something for everyone so if even one person gets excited about a small niche announcement then that’s considered a win imo because the point is for these games to reach new audiences who wouldn’t have originally considered them or even knew about them to think yea I’ll give it is try why not That’s at least the point of Nintendo directs I assume it’s the point of others too
I’m glad E3 is dead. It was cringe and responsible for a lot of games being rushed. The Nintendo directs are much better. That said only the big three need a direct, only Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft. EA & Ubisoft don’t need their own directs.
The way I engage these events is fairly simple and makes them much better for me. I skim them, I don't watch them live, I turn them on when they start, then pause, I check in every now and again and flip from where I stopped to live seeing if there is anything cool. Most the time there is not, I am very picky about my games, I mostly play games where I can play as a woman and increasingly games where I can be a gay woman and even half of those games might look a little boring so I skip through most of these just looking for any sign it might be the type of thing I like. I think directs like Wholesome Games are much smarter projects aiming for a shared tone, a shared vibe, do you like cozy games then some of these games will be for you and the ones that aren't you'll probably enjoy seeing anyway. I think Future Of Play did an amazing job of making games that all feel like the same kind of cutting edge indie game and they do a great job of like capturing a similar vibe of like cool indie made by a team of weirdos who love games. I don't think publishers will stop doing showcases of their own stuff though, it is just better for them and they honestly don't need them to be big moments, for most publishers they had to fight to be in one of the big threes shows, now they don't need to be, they can build hype on their own platforms then work with publishers off the ones that do best.

I miss when all these announcements were saved for E3. It actually gave us something to look forward to because we didn't know what to expect.
I mean to be fair E3 is kinda a thing of the past.
E3 was cringe and responsible for a lot of games being rushed. It dying was good for the industry.
Even if there was no industry wide event but rather everyone just did a once a year announcement or something to that effect
The only Ubisoft Forward they need is is to go Forward into bankruptcy or new leadership.

Agreed
I think you missed the point
The point of a direct is to introduce you to something you wouldn’t have cared about previously and get you to think
Maybe I’ll give it a shot this time
It’s called marketing lmao
If they only showed you things that you asked for then it would be predictable because the shit you ask for is the same shit everyone else asks for
Variety and surprises are what make it interesting
@madnessarcade7447 I think you missed the point of what I meant. 😂
For starters, I absolutely count new things I didn't know about or asked for in the list of things I'm interested in.
Cut about _half_ of these and I’d be more than happy over *Not* e3
Agreed
Gonna be honest, I would love to watch Concord as a movie or TV show. But I am not interested in a character moba, so this is DOA for me.
Facts
I disagree
Then why do u even still watch them if ur tired of them then don’t watch them
Nintendo directs always slay
We all got struggles
oml they could actually just put this all on sgf or a new e3. we could laugh at bad games, and be excited for good ones instead of getting a slew of bad games in all these company’s nintendo direct clones, like half of these aren’t worth it, ngl
My, I don't want random drops. I want a date that I can put on my calendar, take time off and watch like it's the Superbowl. I literally do not watch Summer Games Fest because:
1. Keighley is boring.
2. I know there won't be a lot of things for me.
3. It's disorganized. Give me multiple conferences or presentations.
4. I can just read everything presented in a bunch of tweets. No hype needed
Haha thanks, glad you agree! Thanks for the sub!
Twewy mentioned
I will sponsor this channel if you keep making more content.
I also think there are way too many mid tier indie games and not enough triple A bangers.
Do you know where I can buy single Digimon cards I'm looking because after Chaos cards didn't' get the last set in I thought I need to find a new place so I was wondering if you know of anywhere
I miss E3.
✊️
Not me. E3 did a lot of damage to the game industry in the end.
The point of these presentations is to have something for everyone so if even one person gets excited about a small niche announcement then that’s considered a win imo because the point is for these games to reach new audiences who wouldn’t have originally considered them or even knew about them to think yea I’ll give it is try why not
That’s at least the point of Nintendo directs I assume it’s the point of others too
Im gonna make a Nintendo direct now lol
Go for it lol
Nintendo is the best gaming company ✌️
Apart from all the cool and normal legal action they take against fans
@@KarnUltra yea I get attacking people over switch emulation but yea it’s stupid. Still tho there quality over the years can not be understated.
I’m glad E3 is dead. It was cringe and responsible for a lot of games being rushed. The Nintendo directs are much better. That said only the big three need a direct, only Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft. EA & Ubisoft don’t need their own directs.
Just watch the stuff you’re interested in.
Omg whaaaaaaaat
Am i Blocked here
Well E3 is dead so….
Yes... like I said in the video
@@KarnUltra so why the need to make a video if you’ve come to that conclusion
Because that's not what the video is about????
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I'm so glad you love my video, you're such a big fan 🥰
Other companies: WE can do it too!
Nintendo: *Evil Buu voice* You're missing the point..
I disagree with the overwatch clone statement. One more. Pokemon.
