    Popping in here purely to mention you're playing the old translation of Gunvolt done by the company 8-4, which seemingly on-purpose botched the translation & cut an insane amount of dialogue on top of altering what was already there. The updated translation by Matt Papa is set by picking "English (Japanese Voice Mode)" in the 3DS & Steam version, and is standard in all other releases. Matt restored all the cut dialogue & did the translation work for the future Gunvolt titles in place of 8-4 all up to Luminous Avenger iX2.
    It's also sad to see it considered forgotten when GV made a bunch of appearances in other Indie games like Runbow & Blade Strangers, and is still ongoing. The series deserves more love & recognition as one of the best indie platformer series I have played & yet is overshadowed completely.

    btw, to anyone wanting to pick up Azure Striker Gunvolt, the 3 games in the mainline series are on Steam, and the first two games are on Nintendo Switch as part of a combo pack, while the third game is on Switch as a single game purchase. Also, Gunvolt 3 doesn't have GV as the main playable character for story reasons. You have the female main character Kirin as playable while with GV you can swap with during gameplay. Gunvolt 3 actually had it's ending slightly changed with an update to give more insight as what's going on. I LOVE the music Lumen sings in the Gunvolt series, to the point I bought the franchise's rhythm game spinoff just to have an easier way to hear the songs she sings without needing to go to RUclips or intentionally die in the Gunvolt franchise to make Lumen sing for me. That spinoff however, has no story. It's a super basic score-focused rhythm game with DLC song packs to be honest. The game is known as "Gunvolt Records: Cychronicle", but since I love the music from Gunvolt so much, and rhythm games, I occasionally bring it out to play sometimes.

    The Gunvolt games are fun ventures made by the folks who did the MegaMan Zero and ZX games and they've been around for quite awhile. Just to side tangent, they've also been responsible for reviving the Blaster Master series from Sunsoft with the Blaster Master Zero trilogy which starts as a reboot of the NES game, and then fully became it's own thing while even coexisting BOTH PLOTS of the NES and Famicom versions of the game in the trilogy's continuity. It's really cool to see indie studios take a crack at reviving an old franchise.

    Gunvolt spotted!

  • @DeepWeeb
    @DeepWeeb Месяц назад +15

    As a Gunvolt fan, I would admit it's not the most popular franchise ever (there's a combination of factors to blame; the first being how most people can't gel with the start&stop nature of the tag system and don't find much appeal in the score-attack nature of it, and second because _Inti Creates doesn't invest anything in marketing)_ but I'm a bit confused by its inclusion in this video seeing how *they have already ported the first 2 games to all platforms and has spawned a full-on franchise* (including a third game, a sub-series with two entries, and two kinda-crappy spinoff games)
    I think a more apt game to have discussed would have been *_Mighty Gunvolt_* as it literally is the crossover game between Gunvolt, Gal*Gun and Mighty No. 9, and it really does fit the bill of "weird & forgotten" because it's a retro-throwback game coasting on the hype of the Kickstarter campaign of MN9 to advertise Inti's other franchises; Gunvolt and Beck at least are both inspired by Mega Man, but the third playable character Ekoro was *just a side-character in an ecchi on-rails shooter game* (and despite of this, the "plot" of Mighty Gunvolt only makes sense thematically with the Gunvolt and Gal*Gun universes, it's Mighty No. 9 the one that's being shoehorned in! There were no MN9 bosses until the release of the DLC)
    It wasn't a particularly special game however since it was very short, mostly a demake of ASG1 (with the Easter Egg that the final boss is a teaser for a boss fight later in ASG2!), and unlike Mega Man levels played out linearly and defeating bosses didn't earn you any new abilities (not even for Beck). And another strange tidbit is that it was released for the PS Vita & PS4 only in Japan under the name *_"Gal Gunvolt"_* to tie-in with the release of Gal*Gun: Double Peace (people want to think it's to dissociate the game with Mighty No. 9, but nuh-uh).
    And up until this year it kinda went away the closing of the 3DS eShop (ignoring the fact that it was released on Steam ages ago) but they have announced it's coming to Switch for its 10th anniversary
    P.S.: Inti Creates only ever worked on Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night up until the alpha build and were let go from the main project, in exchange they did work on the Bloodstained retro-throwback side-game *_"Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon"_* and its sequel (and later went and ripped off those games with Gal*Gun characters because of course) + they were licensed the Blaster Master IP to make the reboot series *_"Blaster Master Zero",_* spawning a full-on trilogy (and creating one of the worst "waifu" designs in history). Also, I'm very sure Mighty No. 9 got its tagging from Azure Striker Gunvolt rather than the other way around since the former was still in development when the latter came out

  • @KrimsonKattYT
    @KrimsonKattYT Месяц назад +3

    Some notes:
    Barbie Groom and Glam Pups, despite being a pretty awful shovelware baby game, is actually THE rarest 3DS game of all time easily going for $300+ USD LOOSE. The game full in box can potentially cost THOUSANDS. I have no idea why that game out of everything is so expensive. Probably has to do something with the game's NA version only launching in Canada as a Toys R Us exclusive AND as a limited physical release right before Toys R Us went backrupt.
    I'm a huge fan of Gunvolt, and man you did the Gunvolt series dirty. For one, your gameplay was absolutely awful. And I thought I sucked at the game. 😂Good tip, if you have the default armor equipped as long as you arent using electricity you will automatically null all attacks while depleating your EP guage. By spamming EP refill (down+down) you can remain pratically invincible. This is a good way for beginners like us to automatically dodge the more challenging attacks.
    Secondly, Gunvolt isnt a 3DS game. In fact, the 3DS version of Gunvolt 1 is actually the WORST version because it uses a botched, outdated translation that goes as far as to contradict canon. The best version of all the games are the Nintendo Switch versions, but the PC versions are alright too. Just make sure when playing Gunvolt 1 on PC you switch the language to "Japanese w/ English Subtitles" when starting the game in order to get the game's real translation and full story. Just selecting "English" gives you the butchered OG translation which removes 90% of the dialogue and randomly censors things like Xonda's gender.
    Gunvolt has a ton of media assossiated with it with more on the way, because Gunvolt actually has super in-depth lore akin to the Mega Man series it was inspired by. However, as of Gunvolt 3's DLC tons of things both in the past and future of the current timeline are left unexplained. This is because Gunvolt 2 ends on a cliff hanger that is never explained or elaborated on because theres a 50 year timeskip from Gunvolt 2 to Gunvolt 3. Gunvolt 3's true ending and the resulting DLC bonus campeign also ends on a massive cliff hanger. Hopefully there will be more games in the future planned, hopefully involving fleshing out the period between GV2 and GV3 and also making a direct sequel to GV3.
    Finally, two heads up. While the first Ix game (Gunvolt spinoff) is really good, the second Ix game is kind of mid in spite of it being a huge graphical leap for the series and the first game to get an english dub. And the dub is high quality too, lots of famous anime VAs are included. Ix2 is also infamous for the game's true ending being locked behind hard mode, which lives up to it's name of being ABSURDLY difficult. DO NOT PLAY IX2'S HARD MODE. It is not worth the pain for like 5 minutes of extra story. Just get the standard good ending and be done with it. The final boss on Normal is already hard enough, and even with a "Not So Hard" option fir Hard Mode being added in an update Hard Mode is still insufferable. Ix2 is also hated because of it's insanely overpriced DLC that is practically required to make the game remotely as fun as Ix1 due to DLC-locked bonus abilities that add much needed QoL. Thankfully all of GV3's DLC were completely free (and was freaking awesome) to make up for the shitshow that was Ix2.
    The second heads up is that as of July 2024, Gunvolt's story in GV2 is inpossible to complete on Linux or SteamDeck due to a bug in the final boss' special move. Basically on only 3DS and PC, and only if a active microphone is plugged in, the final boss of Gunvolt 2 will have a special attack that requires the player to SING JAPANESE KARAOKE to win. This "feature" was disabled on the Switch and PS4 versions due to those systems lacking mics, but there's a bug on Linux and Steam Deck (which uses Linux) where that final attack will crash the game 100% of the time due the encoder for the microphone integration on Linux being bugged. The only way to fix this issue is to go into your Steam Deck's desktop mode, go into command prompt, and completely disable microphone use, but this is easier said and done and requires coding knowlege. If a microphone is not detected the final boss will use an alternate special move instead. This issue has been known since around the Steam Deck's launch and still hasn't been fixed. Just a fair warning.

    • @DeepWeeb
      @DeepWeeb Месяц назад +5

      @@waterking74 "What happened" is very simple: most of the staff working on Mighty No. 9 appear to be new-hires based on the credits (the veteran staff was busier working on ASG2), on top of having to work with Unreal Engine 3 which had no Japanese documentation and had its support ended mid-development, on top of having to program the game for 10 different consoles ranging from the lowly 3DS to the PS4, on top of having to work with half the budget due Kickstarter's fees (even if they indeed had $4m, it just wouldn't have been enough)

    • @OtakuUnitedStudio
      @OtakuUnitedStudio Месяц назад +1

      @@DeepWeeb I'm glad to see someone else understands the budget issues. When the game came out it became a meme to just say "This cost four million dollars" because most people don't understand how much big studio developers cost to run.
      Inti Creates isn't huge but they had a staff of 100 developers, who _all_ had to get paid. 4 million over 3 years at a normal 40 hour work week (which is a ridiculous notion, they had to have crunched that game to heck and back) averages out to $6.14 per hour. _Conservatively._
      I enjoyed the story and characters even if the level design wasn't the best. But I also got _really_ confused by people saying "It's too much like Mega Man, it doesn't do anything new." Uh, yeah? Isn't that why you backed it? You wanted a Mega Man game?

    • @DeepWeeb
      @DeepWeeb Месяц назад

      @@OtakuUnitedStudio Yatch Club Games themselves once revealed it's a big facade that their game costed them "only" $311k to make: *it actually would have costed them around $1.44m had them not **_voluntarely worked for no pay until the game was out._* In MN9's case you can tell they ran out or money very quickly after the project began as they were asking fans for more money *twice,* and signed up a publishing deal later on.
      Koji Igarashi explained during the Eiyuden Chronicles campaign that Kickstarter is mostly a publicity stunt to get the attention of publishers who will fund the actual bulk of development, and they do it this way instead of going to a publisher first because it allows creators to retain full ownership of the IP rights, which is already the reason these veteran creators are forced into the whole "spiritual successor" thing (MN9 was a test flight for all of them, and mistakes were made along the way that others later on now try to avoid)
      Also, people who hate MN9 because it's a Mega Man ripoff are lying to themselves! That's the reason why it got funded *_IN. THE. FIRST. PLACE!!_* In reality they hate it because of all the ways it tries to _diverge_ from classic Mega Man (which guess what, are all thing borrowed from the Gunvolt games: the tagging before finishing an enemy, the flat level design, the constant dash-spamming, the focus on scoring, the off-screen character conversations during stages, etc.).
      Meanwhile, Bloodstained Ritual of the Night very flagrantly ripped off Castlevania (the castle contains many area motifs lifted straight from Symphony of the Night, Classic Mode 1 is literally a Castlevania 1 remake beat-by-beat, and the latest DLC is just Simon's Quest redux) and people *LOVE* it!!

      The Pullblox series. And the Boxboy series. Harmo Knight. I supposed you heard even just a bit about those.
      There's also Gabrielle's Ghostly Groove, a fun rhythm game that uses the touch screen and that has a cute aesthetic and cute characters.
      Dodge Club Pocket, a pretty fun but challenging game where your character, represented by a 2×2 square, must avoid a fireball that moves across the area you're in.
      There are many types of challenges based on that simple concept. I still haven't completed the very last challenge, and have been stuck on some others for more than a week.
      And there's that game, I only played its demo a long time ago, it's called Crush 3D, where you progress by changing the camera angle and alterning from 2D to 3D.
      For example, imagine there's a huge block you can't jump over. Just put the camera on top view, a view from which the block looks like it's on the same level as the ground you're on.
      Then pass in 2D mode, and now it doesn't only look like it's on the same level as the ground you're on, it actually is, and you can pass.
      All these games are great and deserve attention. Well as I said, I only played the demo of Crush 3D, but it seems pretty great.

    About Azure Striker Gunvolt, it's made by Inti Creates, also the people behind the Megaman Zero games as well as Megaman ZX and ZX Advent, back when they still worked for Capcom. I respect Inti Creates enough and enjoy their games, that I've purchased nearly every game they have on the Switch Eshop. Their games are so good, and their obscure multiplayer game Dragon Marked for Death, really shows their history of the grim Megaman Zero series games they developed so many years ago. It's dark, people die, and the art style is the same as Megaman Zero, just that DMFD is a fantasy setting with magic and Divine power that game has a take on racial discrimination, while Megaman Zero is Sci-fi with machines and also discrimination of individuals. I'll be buying Inti's next game, "Card-en-Ciel" when it comes out in October. It's their take on Megaman Battle Network, as well as card-based turn-based combat rogue-like games like Slay the Spire. And from what I can tell, it's a crossover game of Inti Creates' past franchises like Azure Striker Gunvolt.

Today I mourn because I was informed of Dot Runner 3D's existence far too late to actually buy it, and a world in which I can't run around voring the last remnants of a dying civilization locked in a bitter struggle with another dying civilization as an uncaring outsider only concerned with filling his belly... is a sad, bleak and lesser world.

    23:01 I don’t know about it being a full sub-genre but I adore that style of recruiting named characters (not counting gacha hero collectors) And yeah, the gameplays loop is made even better when fed into a town building mechanic as a main feature.
    Aside from Ever Oasis and Ni No Kuni 2 other games I know of with both recruiting and town building include the Suikoden series, Eiyuden Chronicles: 100 Heroes and to a lesser extent for the town building aspect there is Alliance Alive.
    For just recruiting there is Radiata Stories, Unicorn Overlord, Chrono Cross, Citizens of Earth plus its sequel, the Tales of the World: Radiant Muthology trilogy and sorta The Last Remnant.
    Then for just the town building gameplay loop there is Eiyuden Chronicles: Rising and the Dark Cloud series.

    Ever Oasis is really good at the beginning, but sadly as I kept going it lost me. There's this system where you can have more party members and switch between them, with each member having their own little environmental skill, like a shovel for digging for example. You only can have so many party members with you at once. The problem is that as you progress, the environment gets littered more and more with environmental barriers or things to collect that require a certain party member's skill. Sometimes, areas require more skills than you can have party members, requiring that you go there twice in a row if you want to see everything. I lost interest in the game when I started feeling like whenever I found somewhere new to explore, I had to leave and come back again with the right people for the job.... multiple times in a row!

    Gunvolt was my jam. After the fiasco with Mighty No. 9 I was scared to try it but once I did I was hooked. I've gotten each game Day 1 since GV2.
    Gunvolt 2 was special. I remember having 20 dollars loaded onto my 3ds, watching the launch stream and immediately buying/downloading/playing it right after that stream, and it was so much fun.
    I like the games that came after, but ix2 left a sour taste as I could never figure out the gameplay mechanics since I was so used to GV2/iX1 Copen, and Gunvolt 3 while amazing, I love the story, characters, gameplay, etc... I am SO saddddd that Quinn got such a shaft. And we never followed up with that secret scene with Xiao and Nori. I mean holy shit he "hurt" Quinn and then decided to abandon her because of what happened. What do YOU MEAN?! That must have hurt her way more.
    Sorry. I didn't mean to rant but that really was my biggest gripe with GV3.
