Doesn't change what they have done or the impact they had on people and themselves for that matter. But isn't it sad that so many people who do commit crimes, often have been the victims of abuse as children.

I remember reading about how Ryan didn't tell Sarah Paulson that the scene she was gonna do that day was a grape scene. So it freaked her out more and she genuinely was so scared. He didn't tell her because quote "I wasn't sure when you read the scene if you were gonna take issues with it and not want do it." You can't say it's because he thinks they are cold blooded killers and just doesn't care because he doesn't respect his actors either. He is a horrible man. Yes the Menendez brothers killed their parents, that wasn't the question in court, it's were they being horrifically abused and did they fear for their life enough to warrant killing them. And that was withheld in their second trial. No testimonies from family witnesses, the brothers couldn't even say a word about it and just sit there, and even the jurors were told forget about everything from the first case. So it wasn't a fair trial because a fair trial is where you hear all the evidence and all the testimonies and decide for yourself, the jurors, if they are guilt. If you didn't believe them than you vote against them, it's your right, which is what happened in the first trial. The vote count was half and half so they deemed it a mistrial.
Edit: Thank you Brett for actually discussing this. I always wondered what your thoughts on them were.

So she had to go through with it, and it terrified her. He should be treating his staff better, at least have someone walk her through it, and council her if he thought she might be frightened to say no, so at least she had comfort. I sincerely don't understand why people don't believe them. Two brothers: one, at
14 is losing his hair from stress, writes an essay about a death row inmate who killed his child's rapist, and until 17 plays with stuffed animals, naming all 40 of them and writing letters from their names. The other brother was found at 7 with an injury typical of sexual abuse, which the parents couldn't explain. He wrote letters expressing his fear that his father might come into his room at night. Both have the emotional maturity of 8 to 10-year-olds and exhibited many behaviors typical of children who have suffered sexual abuse. Over 50 people claim to have witnessed them being subjected to various forms of abuse by their parents. Their mother keeps nude photos of them with erections in a separate envelope,
with their faces cut out, and is excessively concerned about her now-adult son's
sexual life. She even complains to her therapist about it and about keeping shameful family secrets. Their father drilled a hole in his son’s room, has a history of beating
'13-year-old' prostitutes, showing child pornography to guests and neighbors, is friends with a pedophile, and another man has accused him rape when he was 13. Everything is extremely obvious to me.

Not to mention the fact that the family was basically wealthy west coast socialites. It really seems like these poor brothers were actually “made an example of,” by the powers that be, because nothing else seems to make much sense. Increasingly now it is shown that so many “top officials” in high places are not only complicit in high crime abuse, but also that they protect and defend each other, because they all are complicit together. It’s truly abhorrent and my sinful hot take is that the brothers did the right thing by taking justice when none was ever going to be given to them. I know it’s morally wrong but they truly snapped and the parents put themselves in their own danger and suffered their own consequences.

i always knew hollywood could not take real stories or even fictional books and turn them into movies/shows. for me, the absolute worst example of "hollywood-ification" is the movie Jumper vs the books. the movie basically took most of the character names from the book, that he could teleport, and moved to new york, took videos of airports/locations, and robbed a bank from the book, and that was it. in the books, there was no "paladin" organization killing jumpers at all. then you get to the movie 300, another purported example of historical events, and even the cursor search and review of the actual history... yes, there were 300 spartan warriors, but there was also 10,000 mercenaries there too. it was not ONLY the 300 spartans.

Another problem with Ryan Murphy's series is the same problem that comes when media companies create historically 'accurate' docudramas. There are a lot of people who are watching the show and not doing any further research, but taking what they're watching as 'truth'. He is influencing opinion, but trying to distance himself from it at the same time and act like he is unaccountable for his own actions and how they might affect other people.

What happened is that he took the actual real life courtroom scene of Lyle admitting that as a child, he m**ested his brother Erik, once his own abuse from his father had started. However, I don’t believe that to be an ongoing thing, more just a young child thinking it was a normal thing to do with your family members. If you watch the first trial & Lyle’s testimony, he recounts it all there. I think Ryan Murphy dramatised this into some kind of continual in**st situation between the brothers, when that is not at all how they depicted it. It seems like Erik very much forgave Lyle, & they grew up with a normal brotherly bond (albeit trauma bond too), & didn’t want to be sent to different prisons, which they were for a long time, & then eventually reunited in the same one. Ryan is exceptionally talented, I like a lot of his shows, but what on earth was he thinking with this subject matter & response to it? That’s a lot more than just a “dramatised” topic. Pick a lane, Ryan.

Both parents were sick individuals, and a lot of evidence showed there were clear signs of abuse for years. This case makes me so mad because at the time the prosecution basically disrespected all male victims of s*xual abuse by saying they could not be r*ped. Why would anyone care about the brothers as people, when they murdered their parents IN COLD BLOOD!
They were never “brutally raped,” if they were, why was it never mentioned until the second trial?
Why were the only testifying witnesses to the sexual assault all estranged family members?
A lifetime of trauma is instantly cured after murdering both your parents, enough to spend the massive inheritance money they just got on clothes, cars, court side seats at basketball games?
Did everyone seem to forget about the recorded and written confessions they made to their therapist after the murders? Pretty sure they also talked about fabricating the sexual assault in those recordings as well.
    Maybe ACTUALLY researching the case.

I kinda made myself watch it until the end , (I heard about them already many years ago from true crime videos and such you know, so I knew about their story) so things were weird for me when I watched it, especially their relationship..... like.... was that really necessary.....
The only thing I was really sad about was the ending.. that was really sad.
Because in the other older documentary, they didn’t show that part, I think, so seeing it was really sad.
I feel sorry for them in some way, especially when people literally made fun of them back then, like, even if you don't believe that they were sexually assaulted.. why would you make fun of such a thing?...beacuse they are boys and not girls? becuase they said it *after* the murder and not before? becuase they came from a rich family?....
I mean, yeah, things were different back then, and people saw things differently than how we can see them today, but still...
The only few good things Ryan Murphy did were showing those two amazing actors and playing old and good songs from that time....

I don’t condone what they did, but I understand why they did it. I don’t necessarily think that their parents dying was wrong, if what they say is true. And he makes them out, specifically Lyle, to seem like aggressive, insensitive, cold people when that’s just not true.

I remember the trial and am not yet convinced they deserve all the sympathy they are getting now. They were legal adults at the time of the murder & could have chosen to have nothing to do with their parents or pressed charges. What I recall is that after the murder they went on a spending spree, ostensibly because they were celebrating & expected a large inheritance. During the trial they would "fake cry" (no tears) & display bizarre demeanor & facial expressions. People are also trying to re-write history on the Scott Peterson trial. That is an even harder sell for me.

Society again taking the side of the criminals instead of the victims. Most movies nowadays are empathizing with the bad guys and trying to understand them and make them relatable. Anti-hero movies like Joker, Venom, Suicide Squad, Dead Pool, and the list goes on. It used to be good vs. evil but now we try to justify evildoers. Sorry but they killed their parents in cold blood and then went on a shopping spree. They were adults and knew exactly what they were doing regardless of what their father ALLEGEDLY did to them.

They SHOULD send him flowers. Yes they were horribly damaged by abuse, but they were GROWN adults when they murmured their parents, tried to cover it up, and went on spending sprees.
You want to get away from abuse as an adult, you cut off ties and support yourselves, you don’t commit murder and try and cover it up.
Because of Ryan Murphy they may actually be released now.

They went to prison for over 35 years they've done the time especially with the 50+defense witnesses and all the sexual abuse, I agree with going to prison but not life sentence with no chance of parole, Child kidnappers/molesters get not even 20 years absurd, and people are pressed they would get out after 35years instead of all those repeated offenders that pose the real threat to their society not these brothers. The fact the whole family stood behind the brothers and not the parents proves it wasn't made up. The people who believe they should rot in jail have only seen that show where the director hasn't even gone and talked to the brothers and not the hours upon hours of the trials (granted not everyone has the time to look thoroughly but they don't have a problem spewing hatred and nasty things to people who have, you don't know everything yet you pretend you do) People should be glad those parents aren't around anymore, Also medical records of the brothers with horrifying bowel and throat injuries and infections. Doesn't take a genius to figure that out.

Christ! That quote was something else. I guess his show Hollywood was a documentary about his own arrogance. If he wanted to do a fictionalized portrayal why not just do a fictionalized portrayal of the story. You can still put inspired by true events in front of it. It's not like he needs the name recognition.
That said I'm glad their case is getting another look. Elementary did an episode that was inspired by the Mendez brothers some years back and I looked them up after that and I thought what happened with their case was just awful. They don't deserve to be sitting in prison if their abuse can be substantiated.
