That's quite a nice effect. I just learned that Takemitsu used that on his piece "Winter" and Messiaen was quite puzzled by the sounds, and was surprised by Takemitsu's answer.
Takemitsu used it in "From me flows what you call Time" as well

Awesome! Though you can get the same effect by using a slightly larger bowl and filling it about a third of the way with water. If you’re worried about your timpani (probably shouldn’t be, but some people are) then water in the bowls is a good alternative
