Lately I have been experimenting with writing scores for horror movies or just for the sake of ominous & dissonant sounds.

Thanks for taking the time to reply and thanks for sharing another video of an until now unknown instrument for me.
It instantly clicked in my brain when I heard those sounds, since I heard it before in Joe Satriani's Circles.
Even though its a very brief sound in the beginning, my mind instantly connected the dots & pointed me to said song. Rather fascinating how a musician can develop that instant connection over time.
I actually discovered your channel by checking out violin bows to play on guitar with & then I saw a comment about how it can also be applied on cymbals.
The soundtrack/ composer that really inspired me to try to write more atmospheric/dissonant tracks was Mark Morgan & his contribution to the video games Fallout 1 & 2.
I've also subscribed to your marvelous channel. FYI
I would like to know a bit about your musical background if you don't mind sharing.

That’s weird. I just figured all of this out about five minutes ago. I have the exact same technique. I can’t believe all the crazy sounds I get. And my cracked K will probably sound cooler than it ever has.

@@RobMaciak The show Hell's Kitchen overuses the bow-cymbal sound effect to comedic effect, to the point where it's a meme. It would often times be played after Gordon yells about something being raw.

Thank you! On crotales, the pitches tend to behave pretty consistently across the board. Cymbals and gongs tend to be the wild cards.

O by the way, you can get a very similar sound using a drumstick. If you drag the drumstick accross the flat of the symbol following the lathe lines at just the right angle (almost perpendicular but slightly forward) it will do essentially the same thing. You hold the stick up high and skip it along the top of the cymbal in a circle. Tiny bounces just like with the bow.

How taut, or tense, should the bow be? Slack or tight? Some of my cymbals don't respond well to bowing, so perhaps I do not have enough tension on the bow hair. One fabulous effect I saw performed once on the high hat. Bow open high hat and then close the hats quickly. Flexatone good for bowing, too.
Hey there! So glad you enjoyed the video and thank you! Which piece is that with bowed Hi Hat? I'd love to check it out! Anyway, to answer your question, I do tighten the bow quite a bit (short of damaging the bow, of course; it's important to consider how much stress the bow can take - particularly the threads that hold the frog in place) and I use a bass bow because there is more hair and the hair is more coarse (which helps get response out of your idiophone of choice). I also apply rosin really deliberately. I go to a string shop and ask for the stickiest rosin they have, and then I breathe on it before applying it to the bow (alternate several times - breathe on the puck, rub some on, breathe on the puck again, rub some more on, etc). The edge of the cymbal can pull the rosin off of the bow really quickly, so you may need to reapply multiple times if you're doing a lot of bowing. Trying to bow a cymbal without a sufficient amount of rosin will not get much of anything out of the cymbal, and will also eventually wreck the hair. Hope this is helpful! :)
@@RobMaciak Thanks, Rob. I've seen a drummer from an improv group bow the hi-hat. When you close the hat, it sounds like a recording of the cymbals played backward.

Hey there! I use Carlsson Bass Rosin (Sweden-made). It comes in a purple container, 1.75" tall by 1.5" diameter. I asked the string shoppe for the stickiest rosin they have and that's what they sold me. Is it possible with violin bow?
It is possible, but it would be hard on the bow and bow hair, and would require more frequent reapplications of rosin. Thank you for commenting! ❤️🙂
