😅😅😅😅😅
Quentin Letts was on the panel to show Americans that not all English men are intellectual giants like Harry Evans and Christopher Hitchens.
Can't thank you enough for sharing these gems.
The term "'new labour' will date like yesterday's newspaper" 😂😂
I think I see “New Right” attempted to be coined every five years too
Quentin Letts was always such a jeremy hunt
When the UK was relevant.
Huge thanks for uploading his. Hitchens is genius as usual in this video!
Gets it totally wrong about Europe in retrospect (13:13).
hej la4 he was ultimately but he did say after Major throwing his lot in with his right wing will lead him to beaten so badly nobody would dare try it again. They did, but it took 19 years.
Harold Evans had really bought the Blair Kool Aid
I've never seen Hitchens stay so quiet
I’d imagine out of respect for the other journalists
Or, when he does speak, sound so optimistic. "This will be the last time they blame Europe." 😔
Nothing has changed in the UK. 25 years. and its all the damn same. wtf.
There's another video with Hitchens on RUclips about the 1992 American election. Nothing has changed in the US, either. The Western world has reached a state of complete stasis. That probably has something to do with the decline.
It was good of Harold Evans to summarise the disastrous policies enacted by the Blair govt ahead of time!
I wish Hitch was around during the Trump era. He’d have shit himself.
9/11 really did fuck everything didn’t it. And the past few years both here and the US. Politics is best when it’s boring.
Quite chilling to hear him talk of living in “uninteresting times”.
A lot of Quentin Letts' points are extremely pertinent in hindsight
He missed entirely Harold Evans’ point about the wealth divide between London/South East and the rest of the country. That was the precursor to Brexit and much of the mess we will inherit after Covid - serious mass unemployment and huge pre-existing wealth inequality made worse. Hitchens was wildly wrong about xenophobia though. My god...
@@Ukedc259 Letts was also pretty wrong about the Special Relationship - you can characterise the Blair years in many ways, but "not having a close relationship with the US president" isn't one of them...
@@Ukedc259 What are you babbling about? Brexit was purely about xenophobia, and it's two partners paroquialism and provincialism. This is addition to the flagrant corruption that stole the referendum and the self-pitying, whining nature of the average Brexit voter.
@@MattSingh1 it’s parochialism. Wealth inequality only fuels othering and racism. Poorer workers get; the harder the shift for less of a win, the more they blame people who “aren’t their own”. If you can’t see the link there I’m not sure what to say really.
Thanks Nadine
The corruption of the Conservatives in the 90s pales in comparison to the bungs New Labour took from businessmen in return for favours.
Well, Blair got a legacy, Iraq. A complete charlatan & will be remembered for just that.
Thanks Rupert…..
This is so useful, i think this video proves Hitch would have supported Remain in 2016
Hitchens was no where near as eloquent talking about British politics as US politics
Could you provide a few examples rather just throw out general, unfounded accusation(s)?
@@MattSingh1 Thinking that the UK was going to become a republic was a low-IQ take.
Because he thought it was drab and dour.. which it is really. Never be boring was his mother’s mantra to him
Quentin Letts is the anti-Hitchens.
Evans nailed it: New Labour made a lot of substantial changes to the UK in their early years. Now looking back - and by the right at the time - all the talk is the Blairites were all style no substance because they introduced a lot of Clintonesque presentational slickness. But that was only part of it - they also did a lot of actual stuff. It was Iraq that was their downfall.
Open the orders too, which hasn't aged well
Wow. In 1997 Hitch called out Europhobia that would end up with Brexit 25 years later. He couldn’t have predicted how stupid the voters would be.
Hitchens was beyond stupid, let's be honest
Uh, dummy, given that Europe produced Napoleon, Mussolini, Hitler, Franco, the circumstances for WWI, etc., 'phobia' isn't entirely appropriate, since the fear of getting caught in European struggles isn't irrational.
A great Discussion. It's sad though that they didn't mention the Liberal Democrats who won 46 seats in that election.
Capitulating to euro phobia the basest form of opportunism…could’ve been spoken in 2016 or today
Has their ever been a feebler right-wing apologist than Quentin Letts? He’s so out of his depth here…..
Letts needs a good kicking
Leets defines Rupert Murdoch's Renfield.
Used to be a fan of hitchens, but tbh as I've got older his views increasingly looks idiotic and have aged badly. Enoch Powell, btw was right.
How's that whole 'isolation of British business from Europe' going?
